For most U.S. households, the Canon PIXMA MegaTank G3290 is the best Canon all-in-one printer for 2026. It combines refillable ink, automatic two-sided printing, scanning, copying, and useful photo capability. Its important limitation is the lack of an automatic document feeder (ADF).
Choose the PIXMA MegaTank G4280 if you regularly scan multipage documents, the MAXIFY GX2020 for a document-heavy home office, the PIXMA TS8820 for photo-focused printing, or the PIXMA TS7720 if you print only occasionally and want the lowest upfront price.

Best overall: Canon PIXMA MegaTank G3290
The G3290 is the strongest default choice for a household that prints regularly and wants low ink costs without moving to a business-oriented printer. It prints, scans, and copies; supports automatic two-sided printing and borderless printing; and has Canon-rated speeds of approximately 11 black-and-white or 6 color images per minute. Canon lists a monthly duty cycle of up to 3,000 pages. See the G3290 specifications.
Its refillable MegaTank design is more suitable than a cartridge printer for schoolwork, forms, recipes, handouts, ordinary color documents, and frequent casual photos. Canon’s product page also lists Wi-Fi, USB, Apple AirPrint, Mopria, Canon PRINT, Easy-PhotoPrint Editor, and Windows and macOS support. Mobile and cloud features can vary by operating system, app version, network, and firmware.
The compromise is the scanner. The G3290 uses a flatbed rather than an ADF, so each page of a multipage document must be placed on the glass individually. That is fine for occasional scanning but frustrating for tax paperwork, contracts, school packets, receipts, or medical forms.
Buy it if: you print regularly, want refillable ink, need automatic duplex printing, and do not routinely scan stacks of paper.
Skip it if: an ADF is essential or your household prints only a few pages every couple of months.
Best Canon MegaTank with an ADF: PIXMA G4280
The G4280 is the natural upgrade from the G3290 for homes that need automatic document feeding. Canon describes it as a three-in-one printer with duplex printing, a 2.7-inch touch display, and an ADF. An ADF feeds multiple sheets automatically, unlike a flatbed scanner.
Rank #2
- Wireless Print/Copy/Scan
- Up to 2 years of ink included (2)
- Print up to 6,000 black & white / 7,700 color pages using a single set of inks! (1)
- Save up to $1,000 on ink (1)
- 1.35” Square LCD display
That makes the G4280 better for recurring multipage copying and scanning while retaining the basic low-running-cost appeal of a tank printer. However, Canon’s U.S. PIXMA store showed it as out of stock in the August 2026 snapshot. Check current Canon and retailer stock before treating it as an immediate purchase.
If the G4280 is unavailable and document handling is urgent, compare a MAXIFY model instead of buying the G3290 solely for its ink economics.
Best for a document-heavy home office: MAXIFY GX2020
The MAXIFY GX2020 is a better fit when the printer’s main job is documents rather than photos. Canon positions MAXIFY as its more business-oriented family, while PIXMA covers family, photo, craft, and general home printing. The GX2020’s refillable ink system suits a home office, tutoring business, or household that prints substantial document volumes.
Its observed Canon price was $329.99 on promotion versus $410.99 regular. That premium over the G3290 is justified only when office workflow, document handling, and sustained printing matter more than casual photo output. The less expensive GX1020 was listed at $319.99 promotionally versus $356.99 regular.
Canon’s GX2020 brochure lists Wi-Fi, AirPrint, Mopria, Canon PRINT, and related Canon software. Confirm the exact ADF, duplex-scanning, paper-capacity, fax, and network-scanning requirements before buying.
MAXIFY is not automatically better than PIXMA. A mixed household that prints photos and family documents may prefer the G3290, while a document-first buyer has stronger reasons to choose the GX2020 or GX1020.
Rank #3
- Affordable Versatility - A budget-friendly all-in-one printer perfect for both home users and hybrid workers, offering exceptional value
- Crisp, Vibrant Prints - Experience impressive print quality for both documents and photos, thanks to its 2-cartridge hybrid ink system that delivers sharp text and vivid colors
- Effortless Setup & Use - Get started quickly with easy setup for your smartphone or computer, so you can print, scan, and copy without delay
- Reliable Wireless Connectivity - Enjoy stable and consistent connections with dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz or 5GHz), ensuring smooth printing from anywhere in your home or office
- Seamless Multi-Page Handling - Tackle multi-page documents with ease using the Auto Document Feeder (ADF) for quick scanning and copying
Best for photos: Canon PIXMA TS8820
The TS8820 is the better choice for buyers who prioritize photo quality, creative media, and flexible photo printing over the lowest document cost. Canon describes it as a six-color dye-and-pigment hybrid printer with a 4.3-inch touchscreen, borderless printing up to 8.5 by 11 inches, and Canon PRINT support. See Canon’s announcement.
Additional colors can produce smoother photo gradations than a basic four-color system, making the TS8820 more appropriate for photo enthusiasts and creative projects. It is not a MegaTank printer, however. Cartridge replacement costs are the trade-off, so the G3290 may be the better value for frequent casual photos mixed with ordinary household documents.
Best low-cost option for occasional printing: PIXMA TS7720
The TS7720 makes sense when the purchase price matters more than long-term ink economics. It prints, scans, and copies; supports automatic duplex printing, wireless and mobile printing, a 100-sheet cassette, and a separate 100-sheet rear tray. Canon rates it at approximately 15 black-and-white and 10 color images per minute. See the TS7720 specifications.
Canon’s observed price was $119.99 promotional versus $161.99 regular. For someone printing only occasional forms, tickets, or photos, avoiding a larger tank printer can be sensible. But households printing hundreds of color pages annually should compare cartridge replacement costs with a MegaTank printer before choosing based on the sticker price alone.
PIXMA cartridge, PIXMA MegaTank, or MAXIFY?
- Choose a cartridge PIXMA for occasional printing, a lower initial price, compact home use, and photo or craft flexibility.
- Choose a PIXMA MegaTank for regular mixed household printing and lower refill frequency. The G3290 is the default; the G4280 is preferable when an ADF is available and required.
- Choose MAXIFY MegaTank for heavier document workloads, home-office use, and office-oriented features. It is usually less compelling when photo quality is the priority.
The features that matter most
ADF versus flatbed scanning
An ADF is one of the most important buying differences. It automatically feeds a stack of pages for scanning or copying. The G3290 has no ADF; the G4280 includes one. The older TR8620a is listed by Canon’s support page with a 20-sheet letter-size ADF, but its shop and support pages have shown conflicting availability signals. Treat it as a used or discounted option only after confirming stock, warranty, ink availability, and support.
Automatic duplex printing is not duplex scanning
Automatic duplex printing means the printer feeds or turns paper to print both sides. It does not mean the scanner can automatically scan both sides. Some ADFs require manual page turning for double-sided documents. Verify the exact duplex-scanning behavior if that workflow matters.

Ink cost and page yield
Tank printers generally make more sense as print volume rises, but manufacturer yield is not a guaranteed household page count. Results vary with page coverage, color density, photos, paper, cleaning cycles, and how often the printer is used.
Canon materials cite high yields for certain MegaTank models, including figures around 6,000 black pages and 7,700 color pages in specified comparisons. Do not apply those figures to every Canon printer: tie any yield claim to the exact model, ink set, test method, and product documentation. A quoted yield also does not equal a guaranteed cost per page.
Speed
Canon-rated speeds are useful for comparison but are not guaranteed real-world job times. The G3290 is rated at approximately 11 black and 6 color images per minute; the TS7720 at approximately 15 black and 10 color; and the TR8620a at approximately 15 black and 10 color. Total time also includes wake-up, Wi-Fi transmission, processing, paper handling, duplex pauses, and drying of dense color pages.
How to choose in five questions
- How much do you print? A few pages every month favors a cartridge PIXMA; regular color printing favors MegaTank.
- Do you scan multipage documents? If yes, prioritize an ADF and verify whether double-sided scanning is automatic.
- Are photos or documents more important? Choose the TS8820 for photo emphasis, a G3290 for mixed low-cost use, or MAXIFY for document emphasis.
- Do you need automatic two-sided printing? Confirm duplex printing separately from duplex scanning.
- Do you need fax, high paper capacity, or network workflows? These requirements usually point toward a MAXIFY model or a more office-focused alternative.
Buying checklist
- Estimate black, color, and photo pages per month.
- Check whether an ADF is required.
- Confirm automatic duplex printing and, separately, duplex scanning.
- Compare exact replacement ink or bottle costs.
- Check supported paper sizes, photo media, and borderless-printing limits.
- Confirm Wi-Fi, USB, AirPrint, Mopria, Canon PRINT, Windows, macOS, and Chromebook compatibility for your devices.
- Measure the printer, including rear trays and scanner lids when open.
- Check current U.S. price, stock, warranty, and replacement-ink availability.
Maintenance and older models
All inkjet printers can experience clogged or dried nozzles when left unused for long periods. Occasional users should print a small color test page periodically, follow Canon’s power and maintenance guidance, and avoid interrupting cleaning cycles. Using non-genuine consumables may affect reliability or warranty support; weigh the savings against that risk.
The PIXMA TR8620a and G7020 can still appear in search results and older reviews, but they should not be treated as current primary recommendations without confirming availability, software support, warranty status, and ink supply. Canon’s pages showed inconsistent availability signals for the TR8620a.
When a Canon inkjet is not the right answer
If your priority is very high-volume document printing, fast dry output, or laser-like text handling, compare a color laser all-in-one rather than forcing an inkjet choice. A laser may cost more initially and usually is not the best option for inexpensive high-quality photos. Epson EcoTank, Brother INKvestment Tank, and HP Smart Tank are also category alternatives, but their current model-level prices and features should be compared separately.
