For most U.S. households, Ring Alarm is the best budget home security system right now—provided you are willing to pay for Ring Protect Pro to get phone control, cellular backup, and professional monitoring. The Abode Security Kit is the cheapest currently listed hardware option and the better choice for free self-monitoring. Wyze lists an even cheaper complete kit, but its official listing was out of stock when checked. Choose SimpliSafe if dependable outage protection and broader safety sensors matter more than the lowest price.
Prices and availability in this guide were checked August 10, 2026. Prices can change, and totals below exclude tax, shipping, extra sensors, installation, replacement batteries, alarm permits, and false-alarm charges.

Quick answer: which budget alarm system should you buy?
| System | Best for | Starter hardware | Monitoring cost | Professional monitoring | Free self-monitoring | Backup protection | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ring Alarm 5-Piece | Most buyers | $199.99 | $19.99/month or $199.99/year for Ring Protect Pro | Yes, with Pro | Local keypad use only | Up to 24-hour battery backup; cellular backup with Pro | Useful app features and alerts require a subscription |
| Abode Security Kit | No required monthly fee and smart-home integration | $150 | $0 for self-monitoring; Pro is $26.99/month or $245.99/year | Yes, with Pro | Yes | Pro adds 4G cellular backup | Smaller starter package than Ring |
| Wyze Home Monitoring Core | Lowest complete-kit price when available | $111.98 listed; out of stock when checked | About $10/month or $99.99/year, subject to current checkout pricing | Yes | Yes | Battery backup; cellular backup was not reported in current review coverage | Availability and outage communications need verification |
| SimpliSafe | Monitoring reliability and safety sensors | About $250.96 for a comparable setup | Official plans are currently shown per day; Standard is approximately $22.99/month in current coverage | Yes | Yes, with limits | Up to 24-hour battery backup and cellular network backup with professional monitoring | Higher total cost |
| Cove | Low-cost professional monitoring without a long contract | Varies by equipment package | $22.99, $32.99, or $42.99/month | Yes | Not the focus of the product | Cellular and battery backup | Requires a monitoring plan |
Our category winners: Ring is the best practical buy for most people; Abode is the best no-monthly-fee and smart-home option; Wyze is the lowest-cost complete kit when it is in stock; SimpliSafe is the stronger reliability and safety choice; and Cove is a reasonable monitored alternative for buyers who do not want a traditional long-term contract.
What counts as a real budget home security system?
A complete alarm system should do more than show video. For this comparison, a qualifying system includes:
#1 Best Overall
- Outdoor 4 is our most affordable wireless smart security camera yet, offering up to two-year battery life for around-the-clock peace of mind. Local storage not included with Sync Module Core.
- See and speak from the Blink app — Experience 1080p HD live view, infrared night vision, and crisp two-way audio.
- Two-year battery life — Set up in minutes and get up to two years of power with the included AA Energizer lithium batteries and a Blink Sync Module Core.
- Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
- Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).
- A hub or base station
- At least one door or window contact sensor
- At least one motion sensor
- A local siren
- A keypad or equivalent way to arm and disarm the system
- Mobile alerts or an option for professional alarm monitoring
A camera-only package, video doorbell, smart speaker, or collection of unrelated sensors may improve visibility, but it is not automatically a home alarm. A camera can record evidence without providing an entry delay, local siren, keypad, tamper detection, environmental monitoring, or alarm dispatch.
“Budget” also has to include the cost of operating the system. A useful comparison is:
Total cost = hardware + required monitoring + camera subscriptions + extra sensors + installation + permits or false-alarm fees + replacement equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA $110 kit can cost more than a $200 kit over several years if it needs more sensors, a separate camera plan, or a mandatory monitoring service.
1. Ring Alarm: best budget system for most buyers
The Ring Alarm 5-Piece Security Kit is currently listed at $199.99. It includes the second-generation base station, keypad, contact sensor, motion detector, and range extender. That is a practical starting point for an apartment or small home, although most houses will need additional door and window sensors.
Ring becomes the strongest general recommendation because the hardware is easy to expand into a larger Ring ecosystem of cameras, video doorbells, smart locks, lights, Alexa devices, and other compatible products. The base station has up to 24 hours of battery backup, and Ring uses Z-Wave for its alarm-device network. Ring states a range of up to 250 feet between the base station and a security device in open air, but walls, floors, metal, concrete, and interference can substantially reduce real-world range. See Ring’s technical specifications.
The subscription catch
Ring is not a genuinely subscription-free smartphone alarm. According to Ring’s current plan guidance, the keypad can arm and disarm the alarm without a subscription, but digital notifications and app-based arming and disarming require a compatible Ring plan. Professional monitoring and cellular backup are included with Ring Protect Pro at $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year, according to Ring’s current plans page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That distinction matters. Ring’s $4.99 camera-focused plan is not the relevant price for a buyer seeking professionally monitored alarm protection. Ring Protect Pro is the plan to compare for alarm monitoring and cellular backup. Ring says professional monitoring is available in all 50 U.S. states, excluding U.S. territories, subject to local requirements.
Buy Ring if:
- You want the easiest currently available balance of price, expansion, and ecosystem support.
- You already use Ring cameras, a Ring doorbell, or Alexa.
- You are comfortable paying $19.99 per month or $199.99 annually for remote control, cellular backup, and professional monitoring.
- You want a local alarm that can still be operated from the keypad if you cancel the plan.
Avoid Ring if:
- You require app alerts and remote control with no monthly fee.
- You want environmental sensors included in the starter box.
- You do not want your alarm’s most useful features tied to a subscription.
2. Abode: best no-monthly-fee and smart-home option
The Abode Security Kit is currently listed at $150, making it the lowest official hardware price in this comparison. Abode’s free plan supports self-monitoring, app access, live video, push notifications, and integrations. Its compatible hubs and devices support platforms including Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Home Assistant, and IFTTT, although exact compatibility depends on the hub and device.
Abode is the clearest choice for a buyer who wants to receive alerts on a phone without committing to a monthly alarm-monitoring fee. Its plans are contract-free and can be changed or canceled through the app. The current Standard plan is listed at $8.49 per month or $79.99 per year. The Pro plan is listed at $26.99 per month or $245.99 per year and adds professional monitoring and 4G cellular backup. See Abode’s current plan comparison.
Why Abode is not automatically the cheapest complete system
The $150 price is not equivalent to Ring’s $199.99 five-piece kit. Abode’s least expensive Security Kit is a smaller starter configuration, so the price advantage can shrink after adding the keypad, motion coverage, and contact sensors needed for your home. Compare the number and type of devices—not just the box price.
Abode’s free tier also does not provide every paid feature. Depending on the plan and device, video history, automation, recording, and cellular backup may be restricted. Professional monitoring is not included for free.
Buy Abode if:
- You want free app-based self-monitoring.
- You use Apple HomeKit or want broad smart-home compatibility.
- You are willing to select sensors individually rather than buying a large preset package.
- You prefer owning equipment without a required monitoring contract.
3. Wyze Home Monitoring: cheapest complete kit when available
Wyze lists its Home Monitoring Core Starter Kit at $111.98, reduced from $155.98. The package includes the Wyze Sense Hub with battery backup and built-in siren, keypad, two entry sensors, one motion sensor, and three months of professional monitoring. Wyze lists the hub siren at 88 dB and says the included motion sensor is designed to work around pets.
There is an important availability qualification: Wyze’s official listing was marked out of stock when checked on August 10, 2026. That makes it the cheapest complete starter kit on paper, not necessarily the cheapest system you can buy today. Check direct inventory and checkout pricing before treating it as your primary option.

Wyze says its hardware can be used without a subscription. Its Home Monitoring service is separate from camera subscriptions such as Cam Plus or Cam Unlimited. Current review coverage lists professional monitoring at approximately $10 per month or $99.99 per year, but confirm the live price before purchasing. Wyze says monitoring is provided through Noonlight and that agents attempt to reach the user within approximately 30 seconds before dispatching emergency services if the user cannot respond.
Recommended Free Tools
Current review coverage reports battery backup but no cellular backup. Wyze’s product page confirms battery backup and professional monitoring but does not clearly advertise cellular backup, so buyers who care about internet-outage protection should verify this directly before ordering.
Buy Wyze if:
- The kit is actually in stock at a price close to the listed $111.98.
- You want the lowest-cost complete package with two entry sensors, a keypad, motion detection, and an alarm hub.
- You are comfortable with a lower-cost ecosystem and have separately evaluated its connectivity and support.
- You want to combine a budget alarm with Wyze cameras and local-storage options.
Avoid Wyze if:
- You need cellular backup for the alarm hub.
- You need a system that is reliably available from the manufacturer today.
- You are comparing camera subscriptions and alarm monitoring as though they were the same service.
4. SimpliSafe: best budget choice for monitoring reliability and safety features
SimpliSafe is not the lowest-cost system, but it is a stronger value for buyers who prioritize backup communication, environmental sensors, support, and professional monitoring. Its Gen 3 base station has a 100 dB siren, up to 24 hours of battery backup, and built-in network backup. Professional monitoring plans provide cellular network backup.
SimpliSafe’s current official comparison page displays plan prices per day rather than using the older monthly tiers found in many reviews:
- Self-monitoring with camera recordings: $0.33 per day
- Standard: $0.76 per day
- Core: $1.10 per day
- Pro and Pro Plus: $1.66 to $2.66 per day
Current secondary coverage lists the lower professional monitoring tier at approximately $22.99 per month, but plan names and prices have changed. Check the official monitoring page or checkout rather than relying on an old article.

Larger packages can include entry, motion, panic, temperature, water, smoke, and carbon monoxide devices. Package contents and prices vary, so a larger package may be more economical than adding every environmental sensor separately.
The outage limitation
SimpliSafe’s cellular backup protects the base station’s communication path, not necessarily the cameras. SimpliSafe explicitly says that camera video does not travel through the base station’s cellular backup during an internet outage. In other words, the alarm can remain connected to monitoring while cameras lose live video or cloud connectivity. Read SimpliSafe’s power and Wi-Fi guidance and its camera outage explanation.
Buy SimpliSafe if:
- You consider cellular and battery backup more important than the lowest equipment price.
- You want smoke, CO, water, temperature, panic, or other environmental sensors.
- You want professional monitoring without a long-term contract.
- You value a clearly stated return policy and a more mature alarm-focused product line.
5. Cove: best low-cost alternative when professional monitoring is mandatory
Cove is aimed at buyers who want professionally monitored protection without a traditional long-term contract. Its current support documentation lists three monitoring levels:
- Basic: $22.99 per month
- Plus: $32.99 per month
- Premium: $42.99 per month
The plans differ in areas such as camera support, smart-home integrations, equipment warranty, and equipment rewards. Cove systems use cellular and battery backup, and current support material says the service does not require a long-term contract. Equipment pricing is customized and promotions change, so it is difficult to calculate a fair hardware-only ranking.

Cove is not a good fit if your main goal is free self-monitoring. A monitoring plan is central to the product, making Cove more expensive than Abode for a household that only wants alerts on its own phones. It can make sense when reliable professional response is the priority and you want to avoid a long commitment.
Three-year cost: the starter price is not the ownership price
The following comparison uses the hardware and monitoring assumptions available on August 10, 2026. It excludes tax, shipping, promotions, extra sensors, replacement batteries, installation, permits, and false-alarm charges. Because the starter kits contain different numbers of devices, these are directional ownership comparisons rather than laboratory-equivalent bundles.
| System | Hardware used | Monitoring assumption | Approximate three-year total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ring Alarm | $199.99 | Ring Protect Pro annual plan at $199.99 per year | $799.96 |
| Ring Alarm | $199.99 | Ring Protect Pro monthly plan at $19.99 per month | $919.63 |
| Abode | $150 | Free self-monitoring | $150 |
| Abode | $150 | Pro annual plan at $245.99 per year | $887.97 |
| SimpliSafe | About $250.96 | Approximately $22.99 per month for Standard monitoring | About $1,078.60 |
| Wyze | $111.98 when available | About $99.99 per year | About $411.95 |
| Cove | Varies | Basic at $22.99 per month | Equipment cost plus about $827.64 |
These figures explain why Abode can be the cheapest system for a self-monitoring household, while Ring can be the more practical monitored purchase despite its higher three-year cost. Wyze has the lowest modeled monitored total, but its out-of-stock status means that figure should not be treated as a currently guaranteed purchase price.

Cheapest system by situation
Cheapest self-monitored apartment
Abode is the strongest answer if you want phone alerts without a required monthly fee. Start with the entry door, add a motion sensor covering the main living path, and add a second contact sensor for a patio or back door if necessary. Ring can work locally, but without a plan it does not provide the same app alerts and remote control.

Ring is the straightforward currently listed choice at $199.99 for the five-piece kit plus Ring Protect Pro. Wyze may be cheaper if its Core kit returns to stock at $111.98 and its current monitoring price remains close to $10 per month.
Cheapest system with cellular backup
Ring with Ring Protect Pro is the lower-cost mainstream option in this comparison when its $199.99 kit and annual $199.99 Pro plan are available. SimpliSafe and Cove also provide cellular-backed alarm communication, while Abode requires the Pro plan. Verify exactly what the cellular connection covers: it generally protects the alarm hub, not your home Wi-Fi or every camera.
Cheapest system for Apple HomeKit
Abode is the clearest choice because it supports Apple HomeKit on applicable hubs and devices, along with Alexa, Google Home, Zigbee, and Z-Wave. Confirm compatibility with the exact Abode hub and sensor before buying.
Cheapest system for a Ring camera and doorbell ecosystem
Ring Alarm is the natural choice if you already own Ring cameras or a Ring doorbell. Budget for the appropriate Ring plan: camera features and alarm professional monitoring are related but not identical services.
Cheapest system for smoke, CO, water, and temperature protection
SimpliSafe generally makes the most sense when environmental protection is part of the initial purchase, because its larger packages include a broad selection of safety sensors. Wyze and Cove offer leak and climate sensors as add-ons, while Ring offers smoke and CO monitoring through compatible devices and plan features. Starter kits usually focus on intrusion detection and do not include these sensors.
Best choice for a renter
Abode, Ring, Wyze, or SimpliSafe can work for renters because their primary alarm sensors are wireless and generally use removable adhesive mounting. Abode is especially attractive if you want free self-monitoring; Ring is attractive if you want an expandable camera ecosystem. Check the lease before installing a wired camera, drilling for a video doorbell, or changing a lock.
How many sensors does a small home need?
Do not choose a kit because it says “10-piece” or “14-piece.” Count the doors, windows, rooms, and traffic paths that need protection.
Apartment or small one-story home
- One contact sensor for the front door
- One contact sensor for a back, patio, or balcony door if present
- One motion sensor covering the main hallway or living area
- One keypad near the primary entrance
- Optional smoke/CO, water, and temperature sensors based on the property’s risks
Typical two-story home
- Contact sensors on all exterior doors
- Contact sensors on first-floor accessible windows, or motion coverage for each major traffic path
- A motion sensor at the stair landing or central hallway
- A keypad near the main entrance and possibly another at a garage or secondary entrance
- A water sensor near the water heater, washing machine, sump pump, basement, or other leak risk
- Smoke and CO protection consistent with the home’s existing fire-safety layout
A large package can be poor value if it contains sensors you will never install. Conversely, a cheap starter kit can become expensive after adding eight or ten proprietary sensors. Price the final perimeter, not just the first box.
Pets and motion sensors
Pet-friendly motion detection can reduce false alarms when the sensor is installed at the correct height and angle, but it does not make false alarms impossible. Large, climbing, unusually active, or furniture-jumping pets can still trigger motion detectors. Product claims such as Wyze’s statement that its included sensor is designed to work around pets should be treated as a design claim, not a guarantee.
Use contact sensors first on doors and windows. If a pet door is frequently used, a door or window sensor may be more predictable than relying on a motion detector. Mount motion sensors so they cover the intended walking path rather than aiming directly at stairs, windows with strong sunlight, heating vents, or places where pets climb.
Power and internet outages: battery backup is not cellular backup
These are separate features:
- Battery backup keeps the hub powered when utility electricity fails.
- Cellular backup gives the hub another communication path when home Wi-Fi or broadband is unavailable.
- Neither feature necessarily keeps cameras online. Cameras may depend on home Wi-Fi, a functioning router, cloud service, and their own power source.
Ring
Ring’s base station has up to 24 hours of battery backup. Cellular alarm backup requires a compatible Ring plan, currently Ring Protect Pro. During a power failure, the alarm may continue operating, but Wi-Fi cameras, video doorbells, and other connected devices may not work normally. See Ring’s home security information.
Rank #4
- Our second-generation Video Doorbell and fourth-generation Outdoor 4 cameras offer up to two years of battery life and improved security features for more peace of mind, no matter where you are.
- Last longer with two-year battery life — Experience up to two years of smart security coverage on both devices with included AA Energizer lithium batteries and a Blink Sync Module (included with Outdoor 4).
- See and speak from the Blink app — Experience head-to-toe HD viewing from Video Doorbell and 1080p HD live view from Outdoor 4 as well as infrared night vision and crisp two-way audio.
- See more at your door with Blink Video Doorbell — Greet guests and watch packages get delivered, day and night, with head-to-toe HD view and infrared night vision. Use two-way talk to hear and speak through the Blink app.
- Enhanced motion detection with Outdoor 4 — With Outdoor 4, enjoy a wider field of view and be alerted to motion faster with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
SimpliSafe
SimpliSafe’s Gen 3 base station has up to 24 hours of battery backup and built-in network backup. Its cellular backup applies to the base station and does not relay camera video during an internet outage.

Alarm system versus cameras
Cameras and alarms solve different problems:
| Product | Primary job | What it may not provide |
|---|---|---|
| Alarm system | Detects entry or motion, sounds a siren, sends alerts, and may connect to a monitoring center | Visual evidence unless cameras are added |
| Security camera | Shows or records what happened | A loud local siren, keypad, entry delay, tamper detection, or alarm dispatch |
| Video doorbell | Covers the front-door approach | Protection for other doors, windows, or interior rooms |
| Professional video verification | May help a monitoring center assess an alarm using video | A guarantee of police response |
Ring is especially appealing for buyers who want a large camera and doorbell ecosystem. Wyze offers inexpensive cameras and local-recording options. But Ring’s video plan is not automatically the same as alarm monitoring, and Wyze Cam Plus or Cam Unlimited is separate from Wyze Home Monitoring. Abode video storage is also distinct from professional alarm monitoring. Compare the plan descriptions at Ring’s plans page, Wyze’s service-plan page, and Abode’s plan page.
What professional monitoring does—and does not—guarantee
Self-monitoring means the system sends alerts to you and you decide whether to contact emergency services. It can be free, but it depends on your phone, internet connection, availability, and ability to assess the alarm.
Professional alarm monitoring means a monitoring center receives an alarm signal and follows its response procedure. Depending on the provider and plan, the center may contact you or emergency contacts and request police, fire, or medical assistance if appropriate.
Camera monitoring is not automatically alarm monitoring. A person or service viewing camera footage may use a different verification and dispatch process.
No provider can guarantee a particular police, fire, or medical response time. The process can depend on the alarm type, whether the owner or emergency contacts answer, verification rules, permit status, local authority policy, false-alarm history, and the jurisdiction’s response rules. Ring specifically warns that permits, false-alarm charges, and local fees may apply. Check local requirements before activating monitoring.

- Place the hub centrally. Keep it elevated and in open air rather than in a cabinet. Avoid concrete, metal, granite, dense obstructions, and areas immediately next to routers, televisions, baby monitors, or other potential interference sources. SimpliSafe gives similar placement guidance in its base-station installation guide.
- Put the keypad near the main entrance. It should be convenient to use after entering, but not immediately reachable through a nearby window or glass door.
- Cover doors before adding cameras. Install contact sensors on the front door and other accessible exterior doors first.
- Use motion sensors to cover paths. Aim them across likely movement routes, not directly toward windows, heat vents, or pet climbing areas.
- Set entry and exit delays realistically. You should be able to disarm the system without rushing, but a delay should not give an intruder excessive time inside.
- Test every sensor. Open each protected door and window, walk through each motion zone, test the siren, and confirm the correct alert reaches the app.
- Test monitoring through the provider’s official procedure. Notify the monitoring center before testing so a test alarm is not treated as a real emergency.
- Repeat tests after changes. Recheck sensors after moving furniture, changing the router, adding a camera, or relocating the hub.
Hidden costs and subscription traps
- Annual versus monthly billing: Ring’s annual Pro plan is $199.99 versus $19.99 monthly; Abode’s annual Pro plan is $245.99 versus $26.99 monthly.
- Extra sensors: A starter kit may cover only one door and one room. Price the number of sensors your floor plan requires.
- Camera subscriptions: Video history and smart camera features may cost extra even when alarm monitoring is included.
- Cellular backup: It may be locked behind a professional plan even if the hub has a battery.
- Installation: Alarm sensors are usually wireless, but wired cameras, video doorbells, outdoor lighting, and locks may require tools, drilling, or landlord permission.
- Permits and false alarms: Local jurisdictions may require an alarm permit or charge for repeated false dispatches.
- Equipment financing: Check whether a low advertised price depends on financing, a promotion, or a monitoring commitment.
- Insurance discounts: A discount is not guaranteed and may be smaller than the annual monitoring cost. Some insurers require professional monitoring and a monitoring certificate.
- Plan renaming: Ring changed plan terminology in 2026, and SimpliSafe’s current plan names differ from many older reviews. Use current provider pages or checkout pricing.
Abode says customers with an active Pro plan can download a monitoring certificate. SimpliSafe says eligible professional monitoring customers may qualify for an insurance discount. Ask your insurer about your specific policy, state, monitoring requirement, and documentation before counting a discount as savings.
Privacy and account-security checklist
- Use a unique, long password for the security account.
- Enable two-factor authentication.
- Give household members separate shared-user accounts instead of sharing the owner login.
- Review which users can view cameras, change settings, or disarm the system.
- Avoid indoor cameras in bedrooms and other private areas unless they are necessary.
- Use a privacy shutter or physical cover where available.
- Keep the router, phone, and security apps updated.
- Review whether footage is stored in the cloud, locally, or both.
- Change the default Wi-Fi password and use current router security standards.
Alternatives to consider
Camera-only setup
A camera-only system can be the cheapest way to see a door, driveway, or nursery. It is not equivalent to an alarm if you need a keypad, local siren, contact sensors, entry delays, or professional alarm monitoring.
Local-storage cameras
Local recording can reduce cloud subscription costs and may preserve video during some service interruptions, but it does not by itself provide an alarm hub, cellular communication, or emergency dispatch.

A wired Power over Ethernet system can be a good construction or renovation choice when you can run cable. It may offer dependable video and local recording, but it requires more installation work and still needs a separate alarm system for entry detection and monitored response.
Professionally installed or local alarm-company system
A professionally installed system may be better for a large, complex, or hardwired property, especially where local service and customized fire protection matter. The trade-off is usually a higher equipment or installation cost and potentially more complicated contract terms. Ask whether the system uses a proprietary platform or a broadly supported service such as Alarm.com, and confirm who owns the equipment.
Standalone safety sensors
Even with a budget intrusion alarm, standalone or compatible smoke, CO, water, freeze, and temperature sensors may be worthwhile. These address risks that a basic door-and-motion kit does not cover.
Final buying checklist
Before ordering, verify each item below on the live product page or checkout:
- Exact contents of the kit, including the number of entry sensors, motion sensors, keypad, siren, and range extender
- Current stock and delivery date
- Whether phone alerts and remote arming work without a plan
- The exact monthly and annual monitoring prices
- Whether professional monitoring is optional or required
- Whether cellular backup is included, and which devices it covers
- Battery-backup duration for the hub
- Whether cameras need a separate subscription
- The provider’s emergency-contact and dispatch procedure
- Local alarm permits and false-alarm rules
- Return window, warranty, and cancellation process
- Compatibility with replacement sensors and third-party devices
- Support for Alexa, Google Home, HomeKit, Z-Wave, Zigbee, or Home Assistant if needed
- Whether the system can be removed and moved to a new address
Bottom line
Buy Ring Alarm 5-Piece if you want the best practical budget package and accept Ring Protect Pro’s $19.99 monthly or $199.99 annual cost. Buy Abode if free self-monitoring, HomeKit, and smart-home flexibility matter more than a larger starter kit. Consider Wyze only after confirming that its unusually inexpensive Core kit is back in stock and that its lack of clearly advertised cellular backup is acceptable. Pay more for SimpliSafe when cellular backup, battery protection, environmental sensors, support, and return protection justify the cost. Choose Cove when professional monitoring is essential but a long-term contract is not.
The cheapest alarm is not necessarily the cheapest protection. Count the sensors your home actually needs, price three years of monitoring, and decide whether you need local operation, phone alerts, cellular backup, camera recording, or professional dispatch before choosing a kit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest real home security system?
Abode has the lowest official hardware price currently listed at $150, but it is a smaller starter package. Wyze lists a more complete Core kit at $111.98, although the official listing was out of stock when checked on August 10, 2026. Ring Alarm at $199.99 is the cheapest straightforwardly available practical recommendation in this comparison.
Can I use Ring Alarm without paying monthly?
Yes, but only for limited local operation. Ring says the keypad can arm and disarm the alarm without a subscription. App-based control, digital notifications, cellular backup, and professional monitoring require a compatible Ring plan, with Ring Protect Pro currently priced at $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year.
Which budget alarm system works best without a subscription?
Abode is the strongest option for free app-based self-monitoring. Its free plan supports app access and push notifications, while professional monitoring and 4G cellular backup require the Pro plan. Wyze also says its hardware can be used without a subscription, but its availability and current plan details should be verified.
Will a budget alarm work if the power or internet goes out?
It depends on the system and plan. Ring and SimpliSafe hubs have up to 24 hours of battery backup; Ring cellular backup requires a compatible plan, while SimpliSafe cellular backup is tied to professional monitoring. Abode adds 4G backup with Pro. Current coverage reports Wyze battery backup but no cellular backup. Battery and cellular backup generally protect the alarm hub, not Wi-Fi-dependent cameras.
Do I need a camera if I have a home alarm?
Not necessarily. An alarm detects entry or motion and can sound a siren or contact a monitoring center; a camera provides visual evidence. A video doorbell covers only one approach point. If you buy cameras, compare their recording subscription separately from alarm monitoring.
The Bottom Line
Best overall budget choice: Ring Alarm 5-Piece, if you accept the Ring Protect Pro subscription. Best no-fee self-monitoring choice: Abode. Cheapest complete kit when available: Wyze Home Monitoring Core. Best for outage protection and safety sensors: SimpliSafe. Best monitored no-long-contract alternative: Cove.
