For general DIY and repair work, a 6-inch digital caliper is a practical starting point; iGAGING lists the EZ Cal 100-333-8 as one concrete model to compare, but its specifications are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Check the exact model and live listing before buying.
What to compare before buying a budget caliper
Calipers can measure outside dimensions, inside dimensions and, on models equipped for them, depth or step dimensions. Match the tool to the work: check the measuring range, jaw shape and whether a depth rod or other feature is included. A range that is too short will not reach the measurement; a feature you do not need may not justify extra cost.
- Type: digital, dial or vernier.
- Range and fit: the largest dimension you expect to measure, plus whether the jaws and depth feature can reach the part.
- Measurement claims: compare stated accuracy and repeatability separately from display resolution.
- Usability: consider readability and unit conversion, then confirm the feature on the exact listing.
- Working conditions: check environmental resistance, durability, power behavior and support only when the product documentation confirms them.
- Seller and identity: make sure the listing names the model whose specifications you are relying on.
Mitutoyo’s caliper overview describes digital, dial and vernier families. It is a useful orientation to the types, not a ranking of budget models.
Digital, dial or vernier: which type suits your work?

These are type-level distinctions, not guarantees about every model. Mitutoyo notes that conventional digital calipers may need zeroing; its ABSOLUTE design can retain a position reference after power-off, but that feature should not be assumed on all digital calipers. Resolution is not accuracy
Resolution is the smallest display increment or scale division a tool shows. Accuracy describes how close a measurement is to the true dimension; repeatability describes how closely repeated measurements agree. A display that changes in 0.01 mm increments does not establish that the caliper is accurate to 0.01 mm. Check each specification separately, and treat manufacturer figures as claims for the named model rather than independent comparisons.
For context on accuracy and calibration, Mitutoyo says its technical bulletin is based on ASME B89.1.14-2018. That reference does not establish that any particular consumer caliper complies with the standard; look for model-specific documentation. A documented 6-inch candidate: iGAGING EZ Cal 100-333-8
iGAGING’s product page lists the EZ Cal 100-333-8 with a 0–6 inch range, accuracy of 0.001 inch over 6 inches, repeatability of 0.0005 inch, and readings of 0.0005 inch, 0.01 mm or 1/128 inch. The listed reading increments are not the same as the stated accuracy. The page labels its specifications manufacturer-supplied and warns that information may change, so verify the exact model and its current listing before purchasing. iGAGING EZ Cal specifications.
These figures make the model a specific candidate to compare, not a proven “best” caliper: no independent head-to-head results establish that it outperforms alternatives. iGAGING’s 2026 catalog also includes an IP54 OriginCal absolute digital caliper product family, but the catalog alone does not establish a current U.S. price, availability or budget position for a particular model. iGAGING 2026 catalog.

How to get more consistent measurements
- Check zero: close the jaws, confirm the display or scale reads zero, then reopen them. Follow the model’s instructions if the zero needs adjustment.
- Align the tool: keep the caliper square to the surfaces being measured; a tilted tool can change the reading.
- Use light, consistent force: press the jaws against the part without squeezing harder on one reading than another.
- Repeat: take several readings and compare them. If they vary, check alignment, jaw contact and zero, then measure again.
- Verify when the job requires it: gauge blocks can be used to check or set a caliper near the value being measured; they are optional for casual work.
