The best beveled washer is the one that matches the beam or channel’s bearing surface, bolt diameter, project specification, material, and finish. A structural beveled washer compensates for a sloped or nonparallel surface so the fastener bears more suitably; the product name alone does not establish that it fits your connection.
What a beveled washer does
American Standard beams and channels can have bearing faces that are not parallel to the fastener. A beveled washer provides a tapered bearing surface for these structural applications. Portland Bolt describes this use and directs buyers specifying A325 or A490 structural bolts to F436 beveled washers. Portland Bolt: Beveled Washers
That guidance is a starting point, not a substitute for the contract documents. Confirm the washer type and dimensions required for the connection before ordering.
Choose by member, bolt, and specification
Identify the member and bearing face
Confirm whether the connection is to an American Standard beam or channel, or to another section with a tapered face. Match the washer’s taper and shape to the actual member and specified detail; washers that look similar may belong to different product standards.

Match the bolt diameter and washer dimensions
Use the specified nominal bolt diameter and verify the washer dimensions for the required type. Packer Fastener publishes dimensional tables by nominal diameter and distinguishes malleable iron from ASTM F436 washer dimensions. Follow the governing project specification
The New York State Department of Transportation’s 2023 Standard Specifications, Volume 4, gives a particular requirement for beveled washers used with American Standard beams and channels: “Beveled washers for American Standard beams and channels shall be square or rectangular, shall have an average thickness of 5/16 inch, and shall conform to the dimensions and taper in thickness given in Table 715-14.” The 5/16-inch average thickness is specific to that specification and its Table 715-14; it is not a universal dimension for beveled washers. For A325 or A490 structural bolts, Portland Bolt points to F436 beveled washers. Confirm the exact requirement in the contract documents and applicable structural-fastener requirements, including any required certification or traceability.
Distinguish similar-looking products
DIN 434 square taper washers
DIN 434 square taper washers are described for tapered U- or C-section beams and are a separate metric product path. Westfield Fasteners states a scope of M8 to M27 for this product. That stated range does not establish interchangeability with American Standard beam/channel washers or any particular project specification. Wedge-lock washer pairs
Wedge-lock washers are not another name for a single beveled structural washer. Nord-Lock describes a paired system with cams on one side and serrations on the other; its mechanism differs from a tapered washer used to address a sloped bearing surface. Buying checklist
- Identify the beam or channel type and the slope or profile of the bearing surface.
- Confirm the bolt diameter and specified washer shape and dimensions.
- Check the current project documents and applicable structural-fastener requirements; for A325 or A490 use, verify whether F436 beveled washers are specified.
- Confirm material, finish, certification, and traceability requirements with the supplier.
- Do not substitute a DIN 434 metric U-section washer or a wedge-lock pair based only on shape or naming.
