A backpack sprayer uses a pump to pressurize liquid and a nozzle to shape how it reaches a target. The right model depends on the product label, area, frequency of use, formulation, desired coverage and the weight you can safely carry—not on a universal “best” ranking. This guide explains the equipment and the trade-offs to compare before buying.
How a backpack sprayer works
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Pesticide Applicator Certification Core Manual calls a backpack sprayer “a type of hydraulic sprayer.” Its basic parts work together: the tank holds the spray mix, the pump supplies pressure and flow, and the wand and nozzle direct and shape the output. Pressure helps atomize the liquid at the nozzle.
- Tank: Holds the liquid. Screens and filters help keep dirt and debris from clogging the system.
- Pump: Moves liquid from the tank and creates pressure. Manual models rely on the operator to pump; battery-powered models use a motor.
- Wand and nozzle: Direct the spray and determine its pattern, flow and droplet formation. Nozzle choice affects coverage and drift potential.
These components must deliver the product to its intended target at the rate on the pesticide label. The EPA advises selecting a nozzle for the target and application, desired coverage and drift potential. Larger droplets are generally less prone to drift, but a nozzle still needs to provide the coverage required for the job.
How to choose a backpack sprayer
Start with the work, then compare power, pump, nozzle, fit and serviceability. A manufacturer or retailer’s model descriptions can help identify candidates, but they are not independent head-to-head performance evidence.
#1 Best Overall
- Internal No Leak Pump design is safer to use chemicals will not drip down your back. Internal piston pump delivers up to 150 PSI
- Durable, 21 inch poly wand with the highest quality Viton seals can be used with Wet table powders and liquids for all applications does the work of both a piston and diaphragm backpack
- Premium, lockable shut off with brass components and an in-line filter.
- Easy access pump allows changing of seals in just minutes with no tools
- Includes 6 Nozzles: adjustable brass, high volume wide fan (brown), low volume wide fan (red), low volume narrow fan (yellow), jet stream (orange) and foaming (black). Also accepts TeeJet nozzles.
1. Match capacity and use to the job
Consider how much area you treat, how often you spray, what tasks you perform and what liquid you apply. STIHL’s backpack sprayer guide positions backpack sprayers for larger areas and recurring use. A larger tank may mean fewer refills, but it also increases the load when filled; compare the filled weight, not only the empty unit’s specifications.
2. Choose manual or battery power
Manual models require the operator to maintain pressure by pumping. Montana State University Extension says battery-powered sprayers provide more consistent pressure than manual models, while generally adding weight, cost and maintenance. These are broad trade-offs, not guarantees for every product: check the individual model’s specifications and care requirements.
3. Check pump type against the formulation
Montana State University Extension notes that piston pumps may wear more quickly with dry-flowable or wettable-powder products. It describes diaphragm pumps as more durable and easier to repair. Pump pressure capabilities vary, so treat these as selection guidance rather than a substitute for checking a specific sprayer’s specifications. Confirm that the pump and other wetted parts are compatible with the product you plan to use.

- Easily spray liquid disinfectants, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides with Solo's high-performance piston pump for tree, shrub and plant protection
- Solo’s 425 backpack sprayer includes a 20-inch unbreakable wand that securely connects to a 48-inch nylon-reinforced high-pressure hose for an extended reach
- Four easily changeable commercial-grade spraying nozzles-Plastic Adjustable, Fan Spray, Hollow Cone, Jet Stream nozzle and is TeeJet compatible
- Designed with a commercial shut-off valve that securely locks in either the on or off position to minimize user fatigue, the pump handle is interchangeable for left or right-hand operation
- Solo's rugged metal frame with an extra-large tank opening makes it easy to fill and clean quickly
4. Match nozzle and pressure to coverage
The nozzle should suit both the target and the application method. MSU Extension lists these examples:
Recommended Free Tools
- Adjustable nozzle: Tree spraying and longer-range spot work.
- Flat fan: Paths, gardens and general use.
- Hollow cone: Brush and small trees.
- Jet stream: Longer-range spot work.
- Flood nozzle: Wider output.
These are general examples, not universal prescriptions. Follow the pesticide label and nozzle-maker guidance, and match pressure and flow to the product and intended coverage. MSU Extension recommends considering a constant-flow (CF) valve, particularly on manual sprayers; it allows spraying only when pressure is adequate for the application.
5. Assess loaded weight, harness and fit
A filled backpack sprayer can be heavy and awkward to put on, according to UNH Extension. Check the filled weight, harness adjustment and balance, and whether you can safely put the unit on and take it off. A comfortable empty sprayer may feel different once loaded.

6. Consider cleaning and repair
Check whether the tank is accessible for cleaning, whether screens and seals can be inspected, and whether compatible replacement parts are available. The EPA notes that dirt and corrosion can clog screens and nozzles and increase wear. Follow the sprayer manual’s maintenance instructions and verify chemical compatibility before use.

Calibrate and apply responsibly
Calibration is necessary for efficient, accurate and safe spraying. UNH Extension provides backpack-sprayer calibration resources, including the 1/128th method and a worksheet. Calibrate the specific equipment and nozzle using the operator’s technique and intended treatment; then use the pesticide label’s rate rather than relying on a generic tank recipe.
Follow both the pesticide label and sprayer manual. EPA guidance advises applying directly to the treatment area, accounting for nearby storm drains, ditches and surface water, spraying in calm weather when rain is not predicted for the next 24 hours, and rinsing application equipment over the treated area to help avoid runoff. See the EPA’s Worker Protection Standard guidance for related safety information.
