A long-handled bath brush or a two-handle back scrubber strap can help you reach your back in the shower. Neither is a universal best: choose by how you prefer to move the tool, its texture, your skin’s tolerance, and whether you can rinse and dry it as directed. If your skin is sensitive or you have back acne or psoriasis, scrubbing may not be appropriate.
Which kind of back washer should you choose?
The main difference is how each tool reaches your back. A rigid long handle lets you guide a brush across the skin; a flexible strap is pulled back and forth using handles at both ends. Product descriptions establish intended use, not which format performs better for everyone.

Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal, MD, notes, “The long handle is helpful for tough-to-reach areas like your back.” That supports the practical purpose of a handle, not a comparative product ranking.
How to pick a back scrubber for your shower
- Choose for reach and grip: Consider whether you can more comfortably guide a rigid handle or pull a strap with both hands. There is no comparative test here establishing a winner.
- Consider the texture: A rough or vigorous scrub may irritate skin. A tool should feel comfortable, not painful or abrasive.
- Check care instructions: Look for directions on rinsing, hanging to dry, and replacement. Follow the maker’s instructions for the particular product.
- Account for your skin: Mechanical exfoliation uses a tool such as a brush, pad, or sponge, and is not suitable for everyone. The American Academy of Dermatology says people with dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin may prefer a washcloth and a mild routine.
Use a back washer gently
If you choose a mechanical exfoliating tool, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends gentle, short strokes and lukewarm water. Do not exfoliate over open cuts, wounds, or sunburn, and moisturize afterward. Over-exfoliation can irritate or damage skin; stop if irritation develops and avoid repeating the scrub to try to remove more skin.

For product-specific directions, EcoTools says to wet its Exfoliating Back Scrubber, apply body cleanser, hold both handles, and move it back and forth. The company also says to rinse and hang it to dry, avoid irritated, damaged, or broken skin, and stop if irritation occurs. These are manufacturer directions, not independent evidence of efficacy or durability.
When not to scrub your back
Back acne
For back acne, the AAD recommends gentle cleansing and says scrubbing can worsen acne. Its guidance specifically advises avoiding loofahs, back brushes, and buff puffs on acne-prone skin. A back scrubber is not an acne treatment.

Psoriasis
For psoriasis, the AAD advises gentle hand washing and says to skip loofahs, buff puffs, and washcloths, which can irritate skin and trigger a flare. This is advice for psoriasis, not a universal ban on bath tools for everyone.
Dry, sensitive, or irritated skin
Mechanical exfoliation may be too irritating for dry or sensitive skin. Choose a mild routine rather than assuming a scrubber is necessary for cleanliness. Do not use a tool on broken or sunburned skin, and stop if irritation develops. If skin symptoms persist or you are unsure what is safe for your condition, ask a dermatologist.
