The best automatic vacuum switch is the one rated for your tool and dust collector, compatible with your circuit and collector starter, and triggered in a way that suits your shop. A plug-in switch is often simplest for one tool and one vacuum; a sensor-and-remote system can serve several tools; an extractor with a built-in tool outlet combines control and collection in one unit.

How an automatic vacuum switch works

A switch connects a power tool and a vacuum or dust collector so extraction starts when the tool starts. Depending on the design, the tool either plugs into the switch or sends it a signal through a compatible sensor, interface, or remote. Some models also provide manual control. A run-on timer may keep the collector operating briefly after the tool stops, helping clear dust from the hose.

These devices automate when extraction runs; their specifications alone do not establish a quantified reduction in airborne dust, health risk, or cleanup time. Choose and use suitable dust collection for the tool and material rather than treating automatic control as a substitute for it.

Compare the three main options

Option How it triggers Best fit What to verify
Standalone plug-in switch The tool plugs into the switch, which controls the connected vacuum or collector. A single tool-and-collector setup. Voltage, current and load limits, circuit arrangement, certification, and timing.
Expandable sensor or remote system A compatible tool interface, sensor, or remote signals the switch. A shop with multiple tools that need centralized control. Sensor compatibility, collector current and starter type, and whether a contactor is required.
Extractor with an automatic tool outlet The tool plugs into an outlet built into the extractor. Someone choosing or replacing an extractor as well as adding automatic control. The exact extractor model, outlet rating, and run-on behavior.

Standalone switches: simple, but check the electrical limits

A standalone box is a direct option when you want a tool to start a connected shop vacuum or dust collector. For example, iVAC’s current Switch Box listing, accessed October 8, 2026, specifies 115V tools and limits of up to 6.5 peak HP for shop-vac-style vacuums or 1 HP for dust collectors. Those are limits for that listed product, not general ratings for automatic switches. The listing also describes Auto, Off, and On modes, a delayed start and stop, and individual 15A circuit breakers on its cords. Its dual-input arrangement is intended for two separately protected circuits when the combined power exceeds 15 amps; follow the product’s connection instructions rather than assuming multiple receptacles can carry any combined load. iVAC Switch Box product information.

For the listed 115V/20A iVAC Pro variant, the manufacturer says it can handle most dust collectors up to 1 HP directly, depending on running current, and that a contactor may be needed above that. The manufacturer’s general information gives 5-, 15-, or 45-second turn-off settings and a 1.5-second turn-on delay; verify that the exact variant offers the timing you want. The product page also says the Pro is not compatible with dust collectors that use magnetic switches or magnetic starters. Check the collector manual and exact model before buying; do not assume a contactor resolves a stated incompatibility. iVAC Pro Switch product information.

Integrated extractor outlets: control built into the collector

Some dust extractors have an outlet for a power tool and start automatically when that connected tool runs. This can remove the need for a separate switch if choosing an extractor with that feature suits your needs. In the cited Bosch Professional manual, the automatic start/stop function can run on for up to 15 seconds to extract dust remaining in the hose. That timing applies to the extractor version covered by that manual, not to every Bosch extractor or other brand. Check the manual for the exact model’s outlet rating and run-on behavior. Check compatibility before you buy

  1. Read the tool and collector ratings. Record voltage, current or input rating, and whether the tool and collector share a circuit. Use the manuals for the exact models.
  2. Match the switch’s actual limits. Check the exact variant’s voltage, current and load ratings, circuit arrangement, and any stated horsepower limit. A peak-horsepower figure is not a substitute for checking current draw and startup demands.
  3. Confirm the trigger method. Determine whether the tool plugs into the switch, needs a compatible sensor or remote, or connects to an outlet built into the extractor.
  4. Check the collector’s starter. Find out whether the switch supports the collector’s starter type and whether the manufacturer calls for a separate contactor. For large collectors or unclear combinations, confirm compatibility with the switch manufacturer using the collector’s exact model.
  5. Verify certification for your market. Check the current product listing and the device label for certification applicable where it will be used. The cited product information refers to TUV, UL, CSA-related, and ETL marks; do not infer that one mark applies to every model or variant.
  6. Review circuit protection and wiring instructions. Check for individual breakers and any dual-circuit requirements. Follow the manufacturer’s connection instructions; do not exceed a circuit or switch rating based on the number of receptacles.
  7. Compare the delays. Check both start delay and run-on time, and whether the timing is adjustable. The cited Lee Valley listing specifies six seconds of run-on, iVAC Pro information lists selectable turn-off settings, and the Bosch manual gives up to 15 seconds for its covered extractor version.

Choose by workshop setup

  • One portable tool and shop vacuum: Start by comparing a standalone switch’s voltage, load rating, circuit arrangement, and plug setup with both devices.
  • Several stationary or handheld tools: Consider a sensor or remote system if it supports each tool and the collector’s electrical and starter requirements.
  • A collector with a magnetic starter: Check compatibility explicitly before selecting a control system; the cited iVAC Pro product page says it is incompatible with collectors using magnetic switches or starters.
  • Replacing the extractor anyway: Compare extractors with built-in automatic outlets, using the exact model manual to assess outlet ratings and run-on control.
