Compare that convenience with the umbrella’s folded size, weight, coverage, and the maker’s specific wind-design claims. The examples below are based on published product information and buying-guide reporting, not comparative hands-on testing.
What “automatic” means on an umbrella
An automatic umbrella uses a button-operated mechanism, but the button’s function varies by model. An auto-open umbrella deploys the canopy at a press; an auto-open-and-close model also collapses the canopy at a press. That collapse may not shorten the umbrella completely: you may still need to push the shaft down until it locks.
For commuting or travel, weigh the button convenience against the folded length and carry weight. A one-button close can make it easier to get under cover or stow a wet canopy, but it does not necessarily make the umbrella smaller or lighter.
Compare the models by your priority

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella | Buying guide reports automatic open and close with one button. | Folded length not published, according to the guide; weight not stated in the guide. | Guide reports nine resin-reinforced fiberglass ribs and a Teflon-coated canopy. These are product claims, not an independent comparison test. | Guide reports a lifetime warranty; confirm terms for the exact model and market. |
| GustBuster Metro 43-inch | Buying guide describes automatic opening; it says the model does not automatically close. | Guide lists a 43-inch canopy and 16-inch folded length; weight not stated in the guide. | Guide describes a double canopy and reports a manufacturer test in winds up to 55 mph. The figure is not a guarantee for all conditions. | Not stated in the guide. |
| Sharper Image Wind Resistant Automatic Umbrella | Manufacturer page describes automatic open and close. | Manufacturer lists 43- and 54-inch arc options, with folded lengths of 11.75 and 15 inches respectively; weight not stated on the cited page. | Manufacturer describes a venting system and steel shaft; this is not independent wind testing. | Not stated on the cited manufacturer page. |

Choose by the job the umbrella needs to do
For quick, one-handed deployment
Look for a clearly specified auto-open button if getting the canopy up quickly is your main need. Do not assume that auto-open means the umbrella also closes at a button press; the GustBuster Metro, for example, is described as auto-open only.
For simpler closing and stowing
Favor a model whose current product documentation explicitly says both “auto open” and “auto close.” Repel, Weatherman Travel, and the cited Sharper Image model are described that way in the sources above. Check whether the mechanism merely collapses the canopy or also retracts and locks the shaft.

For a compact travel carry
Compare folded length and weight for the exact model, not just the product family. The guide lists the Weatherman Travel at 11.8 inches folded and 0.85 pounds; the Sharper Image page lists 11.75 inches for its 43-inch arc option and 15 inches for its 54-inch option. Those figures come from different sources and models, so they are not a controlled size comparison.
For more coverage
Check both the canopy diameter and the arc measurement when a maker supplies them; they describe different dimensions. The cited Sharper Image page offers 43- and 54-inch arc sizes, while the buying guide lists the Weatherman Travel’s 38-inch open diameter and 42-inch arc. Confirm which size is listed for the precise variant you are considering.

For wind-oriented construction
Vented or double-canopy designs are features to compare, not proof that an umbrella is safe or “windproof” in every gust. Treat any wind-speed number as a maker-reported test claim tied to that model and test context. The buying guide reports the Weatherman Travel’s 45 mph wind-tunnel figure and the GustBuster Metro’s manufacturer-reported test up to 55 mph; those numbers do not establish a universal wind limit or allow a direct performance ranking.
What to verify before buying
- Confirm the exact model and size variant; specifications can differ within a product line.
- Check whether its button opens the canopy only or opens and collapses it, and whether you must manually push the shaft down afterward.
- Look for published folded dimensions and weight if it will live in a work bag, backpack, or vehicle.
- Read the current manufacturer warranty terms and regional availability rather than relying only on a buying guide.
- For wind claims, identify who reports the figure and under what test description; do not read a stated test speed as a guarantee in real weather.
Can automatic umbrellas be used in strong winds?
They may be used in windy conditions, but no automatic mechanism by itself makes an umbrella suitable for every wind. Consider model-specific frame and canopy features, such as venting or a double canopy, and treat any published wind-test figure as a manufacturer claim rather than a safety guarantee. Avoid relying on an umbrella when conditions exceed what its maker supports; the cited material does not establish a wind rating that applies across all automatic umbrellas.
