If you want phone-based control or status monitoring instead, Chamberlain’s myQ Smart Garage Control serves a different purpose: it does not add a mechanical deadbolt.
Which automatic garage door lock should you choose?
The right choice depends on whether you want the closed door physically deadbolted or want to control and monitor the opener remotely. These are different functions, so compare them by what they do and what your existing equipment supports.

How to check whether the 841LM fits
Do not assume that a lock will work just because the opener has the same brand name. Model, generation, and voltage matter. Use the opener’s label and its manual to confirm compatibility before purchase.
- Find the opener’s model number. Read the label on the opener and note the full model, including letters or suffixes.
- Check the official 841LM manual. Compare your model with the manual’s compatibility information rather than relying on a broad brand match.
- Confirm the voltage. The 841LM is a 12V lock. The manual distinguishes it from a 24V lock used on certain residential jackshaft models; they are not interchangeable.
- Review the installation and operating instructions. Follow the instructions for your exact opener and accessory. If model or voltage is unclear, ask the manufacturer or a qualified garage-door professional to identify the correct part.
For DC openers with backup batteries, the 841LM manual says the lock disengages once during a power outage and does not re-engage until power returns. Plan for that behavior if you rely on the lock.

What a smart garage controller does—and does not do
A smart controller can add app-based control or monitoring to a compatible opener. Chamberlain says the MYQ-G0401-ES works with most brands made after 1993 that use standard safety sensors, subject to its compatibility guidance. That broad description is not a guarantee for every opener or installation, so check compatibility before buying.
Remote access is not the same as a mechanical deadbolt. If your goal is to physically lock the door when it is closed, a controller alone does not provide the 841LM’s deadbolt function.

Installation and safety: keep the opener’s safeguards working
Automatic garage-door operation involves moving equipment and entrapment risks. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission states: “Automatic residential garage door operators must comply with a mandatory federal consumer product safety standard: 16 CFR Part 1211.” That statement concerns operators; it is not a blanket certification of every aftermarket lock or smart accessory. - Keep photo eyes and other entrapment-protection features functional; do not bypass or defeat them.
- Follow the opener and accessory manuals for installation, adjustment, and operation.
- For phone-enabled or otherwise unattended operation, Genie’s safety guidance advises checking that connected controls are labeled and listed to UL 325. Does an automatic lock make a garage door hurricane-ready?
Not by itself. LiftMaster says two installed locks have been engineered, tested, and approved for its stated hurricane-ready application, and cautions that a lock cannot replace a center post where one is required during a wind event. This conditional manufacturer claim does not establish that one lock makes every door hurricane-rated or resistant to forced entry.
