The best automatic chicken coop door is the one that fits your birds and coop, then operates reliably with the power source and controls you can maintain. For app control and a complete assembly, consider the Omlet Smart door; for an existing compatible sliding panel, compare retrofit openers such as Brinsea ChickSafe. A swing-door kit is a different option when you have room for its panel to move. These are fit-based choices, not independently tested rankings.
Choose the door type before comparing features
Complete door assemblies
A complete assembly pairs a powered mechanism with its door panel. That can simplify matching the moving parts, but you still need to check its cutout, usable bird opening, mounting area, and travel path against your coop.
Retrofit openers
An opener kit moves an existing compatible door, which can suit a coop that already has a sliding panel. Its suitability depends on the door’s weight and travel, and on installing the mechanism in alignment. Brinsea’s 2020 ChickSafe guide specifies a lift range of 300 g to 4 kg; confirm that the current model and your panel meet the applicable instructions.
Swing-door kits
A swing configuration needs unobstructed space for the panel to open and close. Confirm the swing direction and side before choosing a kit; a clear pop-hole alone does not guarantee the door will clear framing, bedding, or nearby equipment.

The products below are a comparison set, not a ranking based on hands-on testing. Product capabilities and performance figures are manufacturer statements; Brinsea’s cited guide is from 2020.
| Option | Best fit to consider | Documented features | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Omlet Smart Automatic Chicken Coop Door | You want a complete assembly with app features, or a choice between light-based and scheduled operation. | Omlet describes light-sensor and scheduled modes, app and control-panel operation, open/close notifications, four AA batteries, and an optional mains cable. The manufacturer states battery life of up to six months, a test range of -4°F to 150°F, an IPX6 casing, and sensors that stop closing when an obstruction is detected. | Measure the actual aperture and installation area, and confirm the current dimension diagram, included components, and mains-cable availability. These published claims do not establish independent battery life or a complete response to every obstruction or fault. |
| Brinsea ChickSafe Eco or Advance | You have a compatible sliding door and want an opener; choose between light-only control and added timer features. | The 2020 Brinsea guide describes Eco as light-responsive. Advance adds timer settings, manual override, and a latest-close setting. The guide lists four AA batteries, a 300 g to 4 kg lift range, operation from -20°C to 50°C, auto-stop if a chicken obstructs the door, and a three-year guarantee subject to online registration. | Verify present availability, manual, registration terms, and warranty wording. The guide gives an approximate maximum pop-hole size of 340 × 280 mm; check the current model documentation before using that measurement for a build. |
| ADOR1 | You want to investigate a complete steel door with daylight-based operation. | The manufacturer’s current product page identifies a steel door and daylight-based operation. | Consult current instructions for dimensions, control details, power requirements, and the documented obstruction sequence before comparing it feature for feature. |
| Standard Pullet-Shut combination kit | You need a complete swing-door alternative and have adequate swing clearance. | The product guide reports a solar/battery/photo-sensor version, while configurations differ. | Confirm the exact kit, panel dimensions, swing side, power arrangement, and obstruction behavior. |
| ChickenGuard Pro Kit | You are considering a self-locking door and opener kit. | The UK manufacturer lists the kit. | For a US installation, verify regional model and stock, dimensions, warranty region, and the current manual. |
Measure the opening and installation space
Do not treat the product’s outside dimensions as the bird opening. A unit may need more wall space than the aperture it creates, and a retrofit opener needs clearance for the existing panel to move.

Our intelligent safety system instantly detects obstructions during closing and reverses direction, preventing injury to curious chickens. Simply clean the door tracks periodically to prevent dust buildup and ensure smooth, reliable operation for years to come.
- Measure the clear opening birds will pass through, then confirm it suits the birds in your flock.
- Measure the wall cutout separately from the door assembly’s exterior dimensions.
- Check framing, fasteners, wire mesh, and the surface where the motor or rails will mount.
- Trace the complete travel path of a sliding panel or the swing arc of a hinged door; account for bedding, debris, and nearby fixtures.
- Use the exact model’s current dimension diagram and installation manual rather than relying on a retailer thumbnail or a measurement from another version.
As an example of why the distinction matters, Omlet lists an assembly of about 19.25 × 16.5 × 2.25 inches and separately illustrates an aperture of about 9.5 × 14.3 inches. Those are different measurements, and the manufacturer’s live diagram should be checked before cutting a wall.
Match power and controls to your routine
Battery, mains, or solar-assisted power
Battery operation avoids running a cable to the coop, but it adds a maintenance task: check battery status and replace cells before they run down. Omlet says its Smart door uses four AA batteries and can run for up to six months; that is the manufacturer’s stated upper duration, not a guarantee for every installation. It also offers an optional mains cable. Brinsea’s 2020 ChickSafe guide describes four AA batteries.

- Opening Size - When the door is opened, the entrance of the door is 8.2 inches wide and 9.6 inches high. Warm tip: The opening of the chicken coop door is not suitable for turkeys
- Solar Powered Saves Money & Energy - This versatile Chicken Door Opener Solar is powered by solar energy, and the best part is that automatic coop door can also be charged using a charging cable (includes), providing peace of mind during power outages or adverse weather conditions. We recommend fully charging the built-in battery before testing or installation
- Automatically Open & Close - The solar powered chicken coop door built-in timer and light sensor modes allow for seamless automation, making it a breeze to set the auto chicken door to open or close at specific times or according to the natural light conditions (morning & night). This feature has been especially handy during our trips away from home, ensuring our feathered friends are taken care of even when we can't be there in person
- Manual Mode - That is a way to bypass the automatically mode and just use the manually control, when set the same parameters for automatic open and close. For example, select the T-T mode, set the open 07:00 and close 07:00 also. The door can only be opened/ closed manually or by remote control
- LCD Display - Chicken coop doors automatic electric LCD screen light up, the parameters of the automatic opening and closing set are clearly visible. The display that makes setting very simple, ease of operation and flexible adjustment, there is no need to wait for a specific time/scene to set the automatic function
Solar-assisted models are also available, but “solar” can mean different things. Confirm whether the panel is included or optional, how it charges the system, and what backup power is available during low-light periods. Do not assume a solar panel removes the need for battery checks.
Light sensor, timer, and app control
A light sensor opens and closes in response to changing light; it is useful when you do not want to set daily times. A timer gives more control over the schedule. Brinsea’s 2020 guide says the Advance adds timer settings, manual control, and a latest-close setting to the light-responsive Eco. Omlet describes both schedule and light-sensor modes, plus app and panel control and notifications.

- Opening Size - When the chicken automatic door is opened, the entrance of the door is 8.3 inches wide and 9.4 inches high. Warm tip: The opening of the coop door is not suitable for turkeys
- Solar Powered Chicken Coop Door - The solar-powered design is a game-changer. The solar panel uses the power of the sun to run effectively and sustainably, ensure that the internal lithium battery is constantly charged and keeps the battery voltage high enough for daily operation of open and close. Eliminates the need for complicated wiring or frequent battery replacement. Automatic coop door can also be charged via a charging cable (included), so you don't have to worry about weather, power outages, or difficult access to electricity
- Automatically Open & Close - Chicken door opener built-in timer and light sensor modes allow for automatic opening in the morning and closing in the evening based on specific times set or according to the natural light conditions, ensuring the chickens are taken care of even when you are away. It's been an incredibly helpful addition to your daily routine, making chicken keeping much more manageable
- Remote Control - The remote control with this chicken coop doors automatic electric adds an additional layer of convenience. It allows you to operate the door remotely (within 20 meters) without needing to go near the coop, which is especially handy during bad weather or if you need to quickly intervene in a situation from a distance
- Manual Mode - That is a way to bypass the automatica mode and just use the manually control, when set the same parameters for automatic open and close. For example, select the T-T mode, set the open 07:00 and close 07:00 also. The door can only be opened/ closed manually or by remote control
App features are not all equivalent. Before buying, check whether the specific model’s app communicates locally or requires an internet connection, and whether remote control works at your coop’s location. The documented Omlet details establish app functions, but do not specify here whether those functions use local Bluetooth or remote Wi-Fi.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Interpret safety and weather claims narrowly
Obstruction sensors are useful, but a sensor claim is not proof of a universal safety response. Omlet says its sensors stop the door from closing if something is in the way. Brinsea’s 2020 guide says ChickSafe units auto-stop if a chicken obstructs the door. The cited product details do not establish a shared force threshold, reverse distance, retry behavior, or response to every fault. Read the exact manual and do not rely on a sensor as a substitute for checking that the installation is clear and functioning.

Weather specifications also have limits. Omlet states that it tested the Smart door from -4°F to 150°F and rates its casing IPX6. Brinsea’s 2020 guide states an operating range of -20°C to 50°C. These are manufacturer claims for the named products, not independent comparative tests. A temperature range or ingress rating does not show that a panel cannot jam because of ice, bedding, or debris.
Verify details before ordering or cutting the coop
- Identify the exact model and configuration. Confirm whether you are buying a complete door or an opener for an existing panel, and verify what parts are included.
- Check measurements against the coop. Compare the usable aperture, cutout, assembly size, mount location, and full panel travel or swing clearance.
- Confirm power and control requirements. Check battery type and status indication, whether a mains cable or solar hardware is included, and how the chosen control mode works.
- Read the current installation and safety instructions. Look for the documented obstruction response and any limits on door weight, alignment, or mounting.
- Check local support terms. Verify warranty jurisdiction, registration requirements, replacement parts, and availability for the model and region you will use.
