The best appliance dolly depends on what you’re moving and the route: a strapped hand truck suits many heavy, bulky moves; a stair-walking dolly is designed for steps; powered stair climbers are aimed at professional or repeated stair work; and elevated support dollies serve appliance installation and repair. Match the model to the appliance, route, load rating and exact operating instructions—not just the largest capacity printed in a listing.
What is the best appliance dolly?
There is no single best dolly for every appliance move. Choose by task first, then confirm that the appliance fits the dolly and that the complete load stays within the rating for the configuration you will use. The examples below compare published manufacturer or retailer specifications; they are not independent test results.
| Model or family | Best-fit task | Published capacity and limits | Stairs and load restraint | Dimensions, weight and features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FRANKLIN 59725 appliance hand truck | General heavy-appliance moves | 800 lb maximum working load; the fold-out box lifter is separately limited to 200 lb. | Listing describes stair climbers and built-in straps; check the exact instructions for permitted use. | 60 in. high, 22 in. wide toe plate, 44.74 lb listed product weight. |
| Vestil APPL family | Heavy-duty handling, including commercial facilities and bulky loads | Listed variants include 750 lb and 1,200 lb capacities. | Strap or tension bar listed; the cited product information does not establish stair capability. | 24-by-5-in. nose plate; model heights vary by variant: 59, 60, 66 or 72 in. |
| Dolly Innovations M3 | Stair-walking appliance moves | 600 lb listed load capacity. | Designed as a stair-walking dolly; verify the intended stair type and operating method in its instructions. | Steel construction; 60 in. high and 22.5 in. wide. |
| Airsled AD500 | Elevated appliance service, including wall ovens and stacked dryers | Up to 500 lb. | Support dolly for elevated service work, not a general stair hand truck. | Support height 8–40 in.; adjustable width 31–41 in.; 28 lb; six non-marking double casters, brakes, bumpers, safety stoppers and lock bar. |
| Voltstair powered models | Professional or repeated stair use | Manufacturer comparison lists GO at 250 lb, X-Climber at 550 lb, Titan at 440 lb and Hercules at 500 lb. | Each compared model is specified for straight stairs. Follow the model’s operation sequence and route limits. | Use the exact model specifications and manual to confirm dimensions, restraint and handling requirements. |
| Escalera MS-66 | Professional stair-climbing alternative | Manufacturer page recommends a 700 lb model for appliance moves. | Optional straps and attachments are listed; verify current specifications and availability because the page is old. | Confirm dimensions and included equipment with the manufacturer before relying on the older listing. |

What dolly do you need to move a refrigerator?
For a refrigerator move on a route the model is designed for, start with a conventional appliance hand truck: its toe plate supports the load while straps secure the tall appliance. A stair-walking model may be a better fit when the route includes steps. For repeated stair moves, powered equipment may be appropriate for trained professional use. An elevated support dolly is a different tool, intended for service or installation tasks such as supporting a wall oven or stacked dryer at working height.

Check fit before choosing by capacity
Measure the appliance’s footprint and height, then compare them with the toe plate or support surface, truck height, doorways and turning space. Include landings and any narrow transitions in the route. The cited FRANKLIN model’s 22-inch-wide toe plate and Vestil’s 24-by-5-inch nose plate are examples, not universal ideal dimensions. Vestil’s overall height also varies by model, so verify the specific variant rather than assuming the family has one size.
How much weight can an appliance dolly hold?
Use the rating for the exact dolly and configuration, and follow its manual and warning label. Published capacities in the table are product specifications, not independent test results. Attachments can have separate limits: the FRANKLIN listing gives the hand truck an 800 lb maximum working load but limits its fold-out box lifter to 200 lb. Vestil lists APPL variants at 750 lb and 1,200 lb. Those figures are not interchangeable, and a family-level capacity does not identify the rating of every variant.

How do you choose a dolly for stairs?
Stairs change both the equipment choice and the route requirements. Compare the dolly’s stair mechanism, load restraint and stated stair type. A stair-walking hand truck and a powered stair climber are not the same design, and a conventional strapped hand truck should not be assumed to be suitable for every staircase. Voltstair specifies its compared powered models for straight stairs; that restriction applies to those models, not to every stair-capable dolly. Check the precise manual against the actual stairs, landings and turns.
Do not assume that using a dolly makes a move safe for one person. Secure the appliance with the included or recommended restraint before moving, and follow the manufacturer’s operation sequence for powered equipment. Read the exact manual and warning label for instructions about who may operate or assist, where people should stand, and any other stair-specific precautions. A warning surfaced for one appliance dolly includes a specific caution about a second person’s position on stairs, but it should not be applied to other models without their own documentation.

- Support dimensions: Check the toe plate or platform against the appliance footprint and the clearances along the route.
- Portability: A heavier, more specialized dolly may suit repeated or commercial work, while a simpler hand truck may be easier to store and transport. Compare the actual product weight and design rather than assuming all appliance dollies are alike.
- Wheels and protection: Check the wheel type and any bumpers or non-marking casters when floor surfaces or tight spaces matter. Feature availability varies by model.
- Documentation: Confirm the exact model’s capacity, attachment limits, intended use, route restrictions and operating sequence in its current manual and warnings.
