Short answer: For an Apple-centric household, buy a lock that explicitly supports Apple Home Key—not one that merely says HomeKit compatible or Works with Apple Home. The Aqara U400 is the standout for hands-free UWB approach unlocking, the Schlage Encode Plus is the best conventional Wi-Fi deadbolt, the Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus is the strongest keypad-focused option, and Level Lock+ is the discreet-design pick.
Those recommendations are category-specific, based on current manufacturer specifications and support documentation available as of August 12, 2026. They are not claims of independently tested security, durability or reliability.
At a glance: the best Apple Home Key locks
| Lock | Best for | Entry methods | Connectivity and power | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aqara U400 | Hands-free approach unlocking | Apple Home Key, UWB approach unlock, fingerprint, PIN, NFC card, app, voice control and mechanical key | Matter over Thread; rechargeable battery rated by Aqara for up to six months; USB-C emergency charging | UWB requires selected iPhone or Apple Watch models and a Thread-enabled Apple home hub |
| Schlage Encode Plus | A conventional, balanced Wi-Fi deadbolt | Apple Home Key, iPhone and Apple Watch tap access, app control and guest codes | Built-in Wi-Fi; confirm battery details for the exact trim | It replaces the exterior deadbolt, so door fit and alignment matter |
| Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus | Keypad access and guest codes | Apple Home Key, touchscreen codes, app access and Auto-Lock with DoorSense | Bluetooth or Wi-Fi versions; Wi-Fi adds remote access through Yale Access | It is key-free and has no traditional exterior key cylinder |
| Level Lock+ or Level Lock+ Matter | A discreet, nearly invisible exterior | Apple Home Key, NFC and app access | The Matter model uses Matter over Thread; verify power details for the exact model | Pair it in the Level app before adding it to another smart-home ecosystem |
| Kwikset Halo Select Plus | A keypad, Wi-Fi and Matter combination | Apple Home Key, NFC, touchscreen codes, app access and geofencing | Built-in Wi-Fi and Matter; verify the exact variant and battery specification | Advanced features may depend on the Kwikset app and the chosen ecosystem |
| Aqara U100 | Fingerprint and keypad access at a lower feature tier than U400 | Apple Home Key, fingerprint, permanent, periodic and one-time codes, mechanical key and app | USB-C emergency charging; Aqara hub required for some remote features and automations | It does not offer the U400’s UWB approach unlocking |
| Lockly Visage Zeno Series | Biometrics and facial recognition | Apple Home Key, Apple Watch, facial recognition, fingerprint, PIN Genie keypad and app | Built-in Wi-Fi and rechargeable battery | Facial recognition is a Lockly feature with a separate vendor workflow, not an Apple Home feature |
This is a feature-based shortlist rather than an independent laboratory ranking. The available documentation supports category recommendations, but not a definitive claim that any one model is the most secure, reliable or durable.

Apple Home Key puts a digital home key in Apple Wallet. With a compatible lock, you can hold a supported iPhone or Apple Watch near the lock to unlock it, much like using Apple Pay at a contactless terminal. The usual tap-to-unlock behavior uses near-field communication, or NFC.
Apple offers two important access choices. Express Mode can allow unlocking without Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. An authentication-required setup asks for Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode before access. Apple also documents power-reserve behavior for some supported home keys, allowing limited home-key use after an iPhone has run out of charge.

When a supported lock is paired in the Home app, Apple can automatically add a home key to Wallet. People who are residents of the Apple Home can also receive home keys automatically when the lock and account setup support that feature. The exact experience depends on the lock, device, operating-system version and home configuration.
HomeKit or Apple Home is not the same as Home Key
This distinction determines whether a lock belongs on this list. A lock labeled Apple Home compatible, HomeKit compatible or Works with Apple Home may appear in the Home app, respond to Siri and take part in automations without creating a Wallet home key.
A lock labeled Apple Home Key compatible has the additional hardware and software support required for Wallet-based tap access. Always verify the exact product model, generation and module. Matter compatibility alone is not enough: Matter can bring a lock into Apple Home, while Home Key remains a separate product capability.
Our picks
1. Aqara Smart Lock U400: best for hands-free unlocking
The Aqara U400 is the most distinctive lock in this group because it combines ordinary Apple Home Key tap access with UWB approach-to-unlock. Instead of requiring you to deliberately tap the lock, UWB uses distance and angle information to identify an authorized approach. That makes it the strongest choice for someone carrying groceries, luggage or a child.
It is not limited to Apple Wallet. The U400 also supports fingerprint access, permanent and temporary passwords, NFC cards, app control, voice control and a mechanical key. Aqara lists Matter over Thread, an IP65 rating for the outer panel, USB-C emergency charging and a rechargeable battery rated for up to six months. It is designed for single-cylinder deadbolt installations.
There are two conditions to understand before choosing it. First, UWB approach unlocking is not universal Apple Home Key behavior; it is Aqara’s additional feature. Aqara limits it to selected iPhone and Apple Watch models. Second, UWB requires a Thread-enabled Apple home hub. Without the compatible device and hub, the U400 can still offer its other access methods, including Apple Home Key tap access, but you should not expect the hands-free approach feature to work.

The Schlage Encode Plus is the straightforward pick for a homeowner who wants a familiar full-replacement deadbolt rather than an unusual retrofit design. Schlage explicitly supports Apple home keys, iPhone and Apple Watch tap-to-unlock, remote lock status and control through the Schlage Home app, and unique guest codes.
Its conventional design is part of the appeal. You get a recognizable exterior deadbolt form, several finish options and a vendor app for managing access. Schlage lists the U.S. product from $329, but that price should be checked immediately before publication or purchase because trim, retailer and promotions can change it.
Do not treat the conventional format as a guarantee of easy installation. Check the existing door’s bore, backset, thickness, strike alignment and trim clearance. A motorized deadbolt can behave poorly if the door must be pushed or pulled to line up the bolt. Schlage’s security and durability ratings are manufacturer product claims; this comparison does not independently test them.
3. Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus: best keypad-oriented Home Key lock
The Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus is the best fit when keypad entry is as important as Apple Wallet access. It has a touchscreen, built-in Apple Home Key, custom guest entry codes and Auto-Lock with DoorSense. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi configurations are available, and Yale says the Wi-Fi version adds remote access through the Yale Access app.
Yale’s support material usefully separates HomeKit from Home Key. HomeKit enables Apple Home and Siri control; Home Key enables NFC tap access through an iPhone or Apple Watch. That is why the exact Plus model and module matter when shopping. Do not assume that every Assure Lock 2 variant generates a Wallet key.
Yale lists an iPhone XS or later running iOS 15 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 8 or later, for Home Key support. The Assure Lock 2 Plus is key-free, so it is a poor match for a household that insists on keeping a traditional exterior key cylinder.

4. Level Lock+ and Level Lock+ Matter: best discreet design
Level is the choice for homeowners who dislike a large keypad or touchscreen on the outside of the door. Much of the mechanism sits inside the door, giving the lock a minimal exterior appearance. Level identifies Level Lock+, Level Lock+ Matter and Level Lock Pro as NFC-capable models that support Apple home keys.
The Matter version adds Matter-over-Thread support for Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung smart-home ecosystems while retaining Home Key. That makes it a particularly interesting option for a household that uses more than one platform, although cross-platform compatibility does not mean every feature is identical in every app.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Level’s Apple Home integration can provide Home Key, Siri control, remote control with a hub, notifications and automations. Follow Level’s setup sequence carefully: its support guidance warns that adding the lock to another ecosystem before completing setup in the Level app can create a limited pairing window. The Level app may also remain necessary for firmware updates and certain management functions.
5. Kwikset Halo Select Plus: best mainstream keypad, Wi-Fi and Matter alternative
The Kwikset Halo Select Plus combines several features that are often split across different locks. Kwikset describes it as a touchscreen Wi-Fi and Matter-enabled lock with Apple home keys, NFC tap-to-unlock, scheduled access codes, app control, geofencing and a door-status sensor.
Choose it if you want Wallet access for household members but expect visitors, cleaners or contractors to use a conventional code. Scheduled codes and door-status information are more useful in that situation than a lock that only supports phone-based entry. Confirm the exact model and regional version before buying, then check which functions are handled by the Kwikset app, Apple Home or Matter.
6. Aqara Smart Lock U100: best for fingerprint and keypad access
The Aqara U100 is the better Aqara choice when fingerprint and keypad entry matter more than hands-free approach unlocking. It supports Apple Home Key through iPhone or Apple Watch, fingerprint recognition for up to 50 fingerprints, permanent, periodic and one-time passwords, auto-lock through a built-in gyroscope, a mechanical key and USB-C emergency charging.
It also supports Matter-related integrations, but Aqara states that an Aqara hub is required for certain remote features and automations. In other words, the U100 should not be presented as entirely hub-free for every use case. It has no U400-style UWB approach unlocking, so select the U100 for its biometric and code features rather than for walk-up entry.
7. Lockly Visage Zeno Series: best biometric and facial-recognition feature set
Lockly’s Visage Zeno Series targets buyers who want more than Apple’s standard tap-to-unlock experience. Lockly lists Apple Home Key, Apple Watch unlocking, facial recognition, fingerprint access, PIN Genie keypad technology, built-in Wi-Fi, smartphone control and a rechargeable battery.
Facial recognition is a Lockly feature, not an Apple Home feature. Lockly says facial-recognition data is encrypted and stored on the device rather than sent to its servers. That is a manufacturer statement, not an independent security certification or a guarantee that the complete access-control system is risk-free. Buyers should decide whether the extra biometric workflow is worth maintaining alongside Apple Home and the Lockly app.
Apple Home hub and Thread requirements
A hub is not one universal requirement for every lock function. Separate these situations:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Local Wallet access: Home Key tap access is tied to the compatible iPhone or Apple Watch and the lock. It should not be confused with remote control over the internet.
- Remote Apple Home control, notifications and automations: Apple Home generally needs a home hub for these functions.
- Matter accessories: Apple says Matter accessories require a home hub such as a HomePod or Apple TV 4K.
- Thread accessories: Thread operation requires a Thread-enabled home hub, such as an Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini, HomePod second generation or a compatible third-party Thread border router.
- Vendor-app remote control: A lock with built-in Wi-Fi may offer remote features through its manufacturer app even when your Apple Home setup is different. Check the vendor’s requirements rather than assuming that Apple Home and the vendor app use the same hub.
If you are buying a Thread lock or want the U400’s UWB approach unlocking, budget for an Apple Home hub such as a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K if your household does not already have a compatible one. Verify the exact Apple device generation and current software requirements before purchasing.
What to check before buying
1. Verify the exact model, not just the product family
Manufacturers often sell multiple generations, modules and connectivity versions under nearly identical names. Look specifically for Apple Home Key or Apple home keys in the documentation. A product page that only says HomeKit, Apple Home or Matter is not sufficient.

For Yale, check that you are looking at the Assure Lock 2 Plus rather than a non-Plus Assure model. For Level, distinguish Level Lock+, Level Lock+ Matter and Level Lock Pro. For Aqara, distinguish the U400 from the U100. For every lock, verify the regional model, trim, firmware requirements and included module.
2. Check the door before checking the app
Smart locks are still mechanical door hardware. Confirm the lock’s compatibility with your deadbolt type, door thickness, bore, backset, strike plate, frame and interior clearance. Check that the bolt moves freely with the door closed. If the existing door is warped or the strike is misaligned, a motorized lock may drain its battery faster, jam or fail to lock.

The U400 is specified for single-cylinder deadbolts. The U100 includes a mechanical key. Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus is key-free. Those differences matter more than a small difference in app features if your household has a firm preference about physical keys.
If the fit or alignment is uncertain, consider professional smart-lock installation rather than forcing a motor against a misaligned door. Availability and pricing for installation services vary by location, and no particular installer is endorsed here.
3. Decide how people will enter
Home Key is convenient, but it should not be your only access plan. Compare the household’s real habits:
- Choose the U400 if authorized approach unlocking is the priority and your devices and hub support UWB.
- Choose a keypad model such as Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus or Kwikset Halo Select Plus if children, guests or service providers need code access.
- Choose the U100 if fingerprints and a mechanical-key fallback are more important than UWB.
- Choose Level if a minimal exterior is worth giving up a prominent keypad.
- Choose Lockly Visage Zeno if you specifically want facial recognition and accept another access-management app.
4. Separate Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, UWB and Thread
These technologies solve different problems. NFC is the common tap-to-unlock method behind Home Key. UWB can support distance-aware approach unlocking, as on the U400, but requires compatible hardware and a Thread-enabled hub. Bluetooth is commonly used for local phone setup or nearby access. Wi-Fi can support direct cloud-connected vendor-app features. Thread is a low-power smart-home network that normally needs a suitable border router or home hub for ecosystem operation.
Do not substitute one term for another in a product comparison. Calling UWB approach unlock tap-to-unlock makes the feature sound simpler and more universal than it is.
5. Plan for the manufacturer app
Apple Home Key does not eliminate every vendor app. Schlage, Yale, Level, Aqara and Lockly retain app workflows for functions such as firmware updates, code administration, batteries, device-specific biometrics or advanced access management. Install the manufacturer app when required, complete firmware updates and record the recovery method before relying on the lock.
Level deserves special attention because its setup order matters. Complete pairing in the Level app before adding the lock to Apple Home or another ecosystem if the current Level instructions require that sequence.
6. Choose Express Mode deliberately
Express Mode is convenient because the lock can unlock without a biometric check or passcode. Authentication-required mode adds a confirmation step. Neither setting is universally best. Express Mode favors speed at the door; authentication favors an extra check if the phone or watch is being handled by someone else. Review the setting for every person who receives a home key, and keep a backup entry method available.

A practical setup sequence
- Confirm hardware fit. Measure the door and deadbolt, inspect the strike alignment and make sure the bolt operates smoothly by hand.
- Confirm device support. Check iPhone and Apple Watch compatibility, operating-system requirements and, for Thread or UWB, the home hub requirement.
- Install the lock mechanically. Do not calibrate a motorized lock against a door that is being forced into alignment.
- Install or open the manufacturer app. Add the lock, apply required firmware updates and configure codes, fingerprints or other vendor-specific access methods.
- Add it to Apple Home. In the Home app, use the add-accessory flow and scan or enter the lock’s setup code when prompted. If the model truly supports Home Key, Apple can offer the Wallet home-key setup as part of the pairing process.
- Configure access. Decide whether each resident uses Express Mode or authentication, then invite household members and create guest access through the appropriate app.
- Test every fallback. Test Home Key, Apple Watch access if applicable, codes, the mechanical key or emergency charging method, and locking with the door fully closed.
- Test remote behavior separately. Leave the local network and confirm whether Apple Home remote control and the vendor app behave as expected. This is where missing hubs, Wi-Fi requirements and permissions commonly become apparent.
Which Apple Home Key lock should you buy?
Buy the Aqara U400 if you want the most advanced hands-free experience and have a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch plus a Thread-enabled Apple home hub.
Buy the Schlage Encode Plus if you want a conventional Wi-Fi deadbolt with Apple tap access, guest codes and a familiar full-replacement design.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is HomeKit compatibility enough for Apple Home Key?
No. A lock can work with Apple Home or HomeKit, respond to Siri and run automations without supporting Apple Home Key. Home Key is the separate Wallet-based feature for iPhone and Apple Watch access. Verify the exact model and module.
Do Apple Home Key locks require a hub?
Not always. Local features and vendor-app functions may work without an Apple home hub, but Apple says Matter accessories require a home hub, and Thread accessories require a Thread-enabled hub or border router for ecosystem operation. The Aqara U400 also requires a Thread-enabled Apple home hub for UWB approach unlocking.
Is UWB approach unlocking the same as tap-to-unlock?
Home Key commonly uses NFC tap access. UWB approach unlocking is a different technology: it uses distance and angle information and requires compatible hardware and a Thread-enabled hub. Do not assume that every Home Key lock can unlock as you approach.
Can Apple Home Key work when an iPhone battery is dead?
Some supported home keys have Apple-documented power-reserve behavior that can allow limited use after an iPhone loses power. Because support varies, keep another method available, such as a code, mechanical key, fingerprint or emergency charging connection.

Bottom line: Apple households should shop for explicit Apple Home Key support, not merely HomeKit, Apple Home or Matter compatibility. The Aqara U400 is the standout for compatible hands-free UWB approach unlocking; Schlage Encode Plus is the most conventional all-around Wi-Fi deadbolt; Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus is the keypad specialist; and Level Lock+ is the discreet-design choice.
