If you want a dimmer with an aluminum-like or metal finish, start by matching the device to the lights, electrical load, wiring, and control system—not by finish alone. The Lutron HomeWorks Maestro PRO LED+ (HQRA-PRO-AL) is a documented option with architectural matte and metal finish choices, but it is designed for HomeWorks integration and its wallplate is sold separately. Lutron’s product page does not establish that the dimmer itself is made of aluminum.
What “aluminum dimmer switch” means—and what it does not
In a design search, “aluminum” may describe the appearance a homeowner wants rather than the device’s material. The reviewed Lutron Maestro PRO listing describes architectural matte and metal finishes; it does not confirm an aluminum housing or plate. Treat finish, plate material, and electrical suitability as separate specifications, and confirm the exact finish and compatible wallplate for the SKU before ordering.
A metal-colored finish also says nothing about whether a switch can connect to aluminum branch-circuit wiring. That is a separate electrical-safety question covered below.
Best documented option for an architectural metal finish
Lutron HomeWorks Maestro PRO LED+ Dimmer (HQRA-PRO-AL)
This is the clearest documented candidate when the goal is an architectural finish and the home uses—or is planned to use—Lutron HomeWorks. Lutron lists phase-selectable technology and these model-specific maximum ratings: up to 250W LED, 500W incandescent/halogen/ELV, or 400VA MLV. Neutral is optional for LED and incandescent loads, but required for ELV and MLV loads. The wallplate is sold separately. See Lutron’s HQRA-PRO-AL specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- Enjoy full control with our lamp rotary dimmer, adjustable up to 3A
- Our lamp rotary dimmer is an easy to install install dimmer knobs
- Our dimmer knobs are only suitable for ordinary light bulbs and are not suitable for complex light bulbs such as LEDs
These ratings are not interchangeable: identify the fixture or lamp type and total connected load, then check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact installation. The product is not a universal retrofit; confirm HomeWorks compatibility, wiring, finish choice, and wallplate before purchase.
Other dimmers to consider when smart control matters
The following models illustrate alternatives, not a controlled head-to-head performance ranking. Neither Leviton listing establishes an aluminum finish.

| Model | Role and interface | Published ratings and requirements | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lutron HomeWorks Maestro PRO LED+ (HQRA-PRO-AL) | Architectural matte and metal finish options; HomeWorks-integrated control; wallplate sold separately. | Up to 250W LED, 500W incandescent/halogen/ELV, or 400VA MLV. Neutral optional for LED/incandescent and required for ELV/MLV. Lutron product page reviewed in 2026. | Confirm HomeWorks system, load, finish SKU, wiring, and plate. |
| Leviton Decora Smart ELV / LED phase-selectable dimmer (D2ELV) | Smart rocker control with customizable settings; selectable faceplate colors are available through DDKIT. | At 120V/60Hz: up to 600VA ELV, 300W dimmable LED/CFL, or 600W incandescent/halogen. Neutral and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi required. Leviton product page reviewed in 2026. | Not for MLV or motor loads. Faceplate color options do not establish a metal finish. Check Leviton’s D2ELV listing. |
| Leviton D36HD | Smart dimmer example; useful for reviewing installation and RF cautions, not as a finish recommendation. | At 120VAC/60Hz: 300W LED/CFL, 300W incandescent, or 300VA MLV. The reviewed instruction sheet does not state a publication date. | Instructions prohibit aluminum wire and warn that metal wall boxes or wallplates may reduce RF performance. Read the D36HD instruction sheet. |
How to choose a dimmer that will work with your lights
- Identify the exact light source. Check whether the connected lamps or fixtures are dimmable LEDs, CFLs, incandescent or halogen, ELV, or MLV. Do not assume that a dimmer rated for one category is suitable for another.
- Check the exact compatibility pairing. A “dimmable” label does not guarantee smooth operation with every dimmer. Leviton says, “Not all LED bulbs dim smoothly with every Leviton dimmer.” Consult the manufacturer’s compatibility tool or list for the exact bulb or fixture and dimmer model. Leviton’s dimmer information and Lutron’s dimmer and light-control range are starting points.
- Calculate the connected load. Add the load on the dimmer’s circuit and compare it with the rating for that specific light-source category. Use the device’s own instructions; do not transfer one model’s capacity to another.
- Verify wiring and control setup. Determine whether the device requires a neutral, whether the home’s switching arrangement is single-pole or multi-location, and whether the control is standalone, Wi-Fi smart, or part of a system such as HomeWorks. Follow the exact model instructions.
- Choose the interface and finish together. Paddle/slide, rocker, touch, toggle, and rotary designs offer different everyday controls. Confirm the faceplate or wallplate is included, sold separately, or selected as an accessory, and check that its finish and fit match the dimmer.
Do not confuse a metal finish with aluminum wiring
Finish is an appearance choice; aluminum branch-circuit wiring requires a device specifically rated for that wiring. Leviton says its D36HD must not be used with aluminum wire. Leviton’s support guidance states, “THESE ARE THE ONLY SWITCHES THAT MAY BE USED WITH ALUMINUM WIRING,” referring to switches bearing the required CO/ALR rating, which is stamped on the switch strap. Read Leviton’s CO/ALR guidance. Do not infer wiring approval from a product’s finish, smart features, or ordinary load rating; consult the device markings and instructions and use a qualified electrician when wiring suitability is uncertain.

- Choose the Lutron HQRA-PRO-AL for the documented design-led case if you want an architectural matte or metal finish and your project is compatible with HomeWorks. Verify the load class, neutral requirement, exact finish, and separately sold wallplate.
- Consider the Leviton D2ELV if you need its smart rocker controls and your fixtures, neutral wiring, Wi-Fi, and load fall within its stated requirements; it is not documented here as an aluminum-finish product.
- Use the D36HD example as an installation check, not a finish pick: its instructions provide specific load ratings and explicitly exclude aluminum wire, with an RF-performance caution for metal boxes or plates.
There is no controlled head-to-head test establishing one overall “best” aluminum-finish dimmer. The right choice depends on finish and plate, fixture compatibility, load capacity, wiring, switching locations, and smart-system requirements.
