A portable air purifier with a substantial activated-carbon filter may reduce some gaseous odors, but it cannot fix a plumbing or ventilation problem that is letting sewer gas into a building. Find and address the source first; treat filtration only as a possible supplement, not as a safety measure.
Will an air purifier get rid of sewer smell?
It may reduce some odors if it has a gas-phase filter, such as activated carbon. A particle-only filter is not designed to remove gases: EPA says gas removal requires special media such as activated carbon or alumina. Even then, effectiveness depends on the filter and the gas involved.
That distinction matters for sewer odors. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is one possible component, and EPA’s technical guidance says ordinary activated carbon is not especially effective against it. Consumer air purifiers should not be assumed to remove H2S reliably. EPA describes engineered treatment media for H2S-containing streams, but that is not the same as an ordinary household carbon filter.
Accordingly, there is no evidence here to name a consumer model as the “best” for sewer gas or to claim a particular H2S removal rate. An air purifier is not a remedy for a sewer-gas leak and cannot establish that an indoor space is safe.

What to look for in a purifier for odors
If the source has been addressed and you still want supplemental filtration for some gaseous odors, compare the filter and the way the unit will be used—not just its particle-cleaning numbers.
- Gas-removal media: Look for a portable air purifier that explicitly includes activated carbon or another filter designed to remove gases. EPA says activated carbon can be effective when the filter contains a large amount of material.
- Filter design and claims: Check whether the manufacturer describes the media as intended for gases or odors. Do not treat a generic carbon layer as proof of H2S removal.
- Room air throughput and operating speed: Consider how much air the unit moves at the speed you can realistically run. EPA notes that faster operation and longer runtime increase the amount of air filtered.
- Replacement media and upkeep: Confirm that compatible gas-removal filters are available and account for replacement and maintenance. Sorbent media has limited capacity and eventually needs attention.
- Particle CADR: Use a clean-air delivery rate (CADR) as a particle metric, not as evidence that a unit removes gases or hydrogen sulfide.
EPA says there is no widely used performance-rating system for gas-removal filters. That makes unsupported cross-brand rankings or precise gas-removal comparisons unreliable. For product discovery, search for an activated carbon air purifier for odors, then verify the media, replacement-filter compatibility, and manufacturer’s stated purpose. A compatible activated-carbon replacement filter is relevant only if it is designed for gas removal. Neither purchase addresses the source of sewer gas.

Check the building source before relying on filtration
Sewer-like odors can point to a pathway into the building. EPA identifies dried drain traps as one route: water in the trap normally helps block sewer gases, and an infrequently used floor drain can dry out. EPA also notes that sewer vents positioned too near outdoor-air intakes can allow gases to be drawn indoors.
- Note where and when the odor occurs. Record the rooms affected, whether the smell is persistent or intermittent, and any connection to drains or ventilation. This information can help a qualified professional investigate the source.
- Consider seldom-used drains. An obscure floor drain or other infrequently used fixture may have a dry trap. EPA recommends keeping traps from drying out.
- Have suspected defects investigated. If the smell persists, appears suddenly or widely, or has no clear explanation, arrange an appropriate building and plumbing investigation. A licensed plumber or sewer/drain professional is a practical service category for suspected source defects.
- Address ventilation pathways where indicated. If a vent’s position near an outdoor-air intake is suspected, the building’s ventilation and plumbing arrangement needs assessment; filtration does not correct that pathway.
EPA’s guidance identifies possible pathways, not a diagnosis of any particular building. A dry trap or poorly positioned vent is a possibility to investigate, not something to assume from smell alone.

Hydrogen sulfide: why smell is not a safety test
EPA warns that sewer gases are more than an odor problem: at sufficient concentrations, hydrogen sulfide can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat and cause difficulty breathing. EPA technical material also describes H2S as toxic and notes that as levels rise, the gas can numb the sense of smell. A fading or absent rotten-egg odor therefore does not prove that a space is safe.
Do not use a purifier—or your ability to smell the odor—to assess an uninvestigated gas source. If people experience irritation or breathing difficulty, or the odor is sudden, widespread, or otherwise concerning, leave the affected area and seek appropriate emergency or building-safety assistance rather than waiting for an air cleaner to work.
