For airborne particles, a portable HEPA cleaner is a common choice; for gases or odors, look for a substantial activated-carbon or other pollutant-specific filter. A purifier is a room-level tool—not a guarantee of better health, a substitute for clean-air ventilation, or a fix for mold or its moisture source.
How to choose an air purifier for an older adult
- Measure the room or area. Include the whole open area the purifier is expected to serve, not just the space immediately around the unit. Note ceiling height, too.
- Match the clean air delivery rate (CADR) to the space. Use the tobacco-smoke CADR when smoke or small particles are a concern. CADR rates particle removal; it is not a rating for removing gases.
- Choose the filter for the pollutant. HEPA filtration is a common option for particles. For gases or odors, look for activated carbon or another absorbent made for the target pollutant; EPA notes that a large amount of carbon material is important.
- Check operating noise and controls. Noise varies by fan speed. Consider the sound at the setting the resident will actually use, and whether the controls and filter changes are manageable for them.
- Check ozone status and filter upkeep. Avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone. Confirm compatible replacement filters are available and follow the manufacturer’s replacement instructions.
EPA does not certify or recommend particular brands or models. A label or listing should not be described as “EPA approved.”
Size CADR to the room
EPA’s sizing estimates assume an 8-foot ceiling. Use the listed CADR as a practical starting point; higher ceilings may call for a larger unit. If the room is open to other spaces, size for the full area the purifier needs to serve.
| Room area | EPA estimated CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | 65 cfm |
| 200 sq ft | 130 cfm |
| 300 sq ft | 195 cfm |
| 400 sq ft | 260 cfm |
| 500 sq ft | 325 cfm |
| 600 sq ft | 390 cfm |
These figures are EPA estimates, not guarantees of a particular room’s air quality or health outcome. For wildfire smoke, EPA gives a more specific cleaner-air-room recommendation: choose a tobacco-smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room’s square footage and use a CARB-certified cleaner, which produces little or no ozone. EPA identifies older adults as being at greater risk from wildfire smoke. EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance applies to smoke events; it should not be read as proof that a given model prevents illness.

Match filtration to the concern
Particles, dust, and smoke
A portable HEPA air purifier can capture airborne particles when it is appropriately sized and operated. CADR is useful for comparing particle-cleaning capacity. For wildfire smoke, use the tobacco-smoke CADR in the sizing guidance above.
Gases and odors
Particle filters do not necessarily remove gases. EPA advises looking for activated carbon or another gas-specific absorbent for gases or odors, and emphasizes that the amount of carbon matters. Do not treat a particle CADR as a measure of gas removal.

Mold and dampness
An air cleaner may capture some airborne mold particles, but it cannot correct the dampness or water leak that caused mold growth. Fix the moisture source and clean up the mold; filtration is not remediation.
Make sure the purifier is usable in daily life
A purifier only filters while it is running. A high maximum CADR has limited value if its loudest setting is too uncomfortable to use. Check published noise by fan setting, if provided, and prioritize a level the resident can tolerate. Place the unit where the older adult spends time, with its intake and exhaust clear of curtains, furniture, and other obstructions.

Also consider whether the unit fits the available floor or table space, whether its controls are easy to operate, and whether the filter is accessible to replace. All filters need regular replacement, but schedules and costs depend on the specific model; verify those details with its manufacturer before buying.
What a purifier can—and cannot—do
EPA describes source reduction and clean-air ventilation as the most effective ways to improve indoor air, with filtration as a useful supplement. When outdoor air is clean enough, bringing it indoors can help; when outdoor pollution or wildfire smoke is high, follow local guidance about keeping windows closed and creating a cleaner-air room. No cleaner removes every pollutant. As EPA puts it in its consumer guide, “No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.”

Evidence about health effects should be framed carefully. EPA summarizes multiple studies of portable HEPA cleaners that found improvement in one or more allergy or asthma symptoms, but results were mixed and not every symptom improved. A purifier should not be presented as a treatment, a way to prevent disease, or a promise of symptom relief.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Consider central HVAC filtration as a complement
A portable purifier is meant for a room or area. A central furnace or HVAC filter serves the system when it runs, rather than providing a dedicated cleaner for one occupied room. EPA recommends MERV 13—or the highest rating the system can accommodate. A qualified HVAC professional can help confirm compatibility, since a filter that the system cannot handle may be unsuitable. See the EPA guide to air cleaners in the home for its selection and system guidance.
