There is no widely used rating that lets you compare purifiersβ odor-removal performance, and the available evidence does not establish product-specific βtop picks.β
Can an air purifier remove cannabis smoke smell?
It may reduce some odor, but no purifier can be relied on to eliminate it. Smoke includes both airborne particles and gases; those require different filtration media. A mechanical filter captures particles, while activated carbon or another gas-targeted sorbent is intended to adsorb gases and some odors. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says carbon can be effective when a large amount of material is used, but it does not provide a model-level odor score. A thin carbon-coated layer should not be assumed to perform like a deep carbon bed.
Smoke can also leave chemicals on hard surfaces and in soft furnishings, where they may later be released back into the air. An air cleaner does not remove that contamination; cleaning affected surfaces and fabrics is a separate part of addressing lingering odor. EPA guidance on secondhand smoke and aerosols describes this persistence.
What kind of purifier should you choose?
For particles: a mechanical filter and an appropriate CADR
Look for a mechanical particle filter, such as HEPA or another pleated filter. Compare the unitβs particle CADR with the size of the room it will serve. CADR indicates particle-cleaning capacity; it is not an odor-removal rating and does not measure gas filtration. EPAβs Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home recommends matching particle CADR to room area and notes that its estimates assume an eight-foot ceiling.

These are EPAβs 2022 estimates for rooms with eight-foot ceilings; size up for higher ceilings. EPAβs separate cleaner-air-room guidance suggests a tobacco-smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the roomβs area in square feet for its smoke-event context, with the unit running continuously at its highest setting. That is a particle-sizing guideline for that context, not a cannabis-odor test or a measure of gas removal.
For gases and some odors: meaningful carbon capacity
Check that the purifier includes activated carbon or another sorbent designed for gas removal, in addition to its particle filter. The quantity and depth of sorbent matter. EPA says a portable cleaner with high CADR and an activated-carbon filter can filter particles and gases, but CADR does not tell you how well a model handles gases. Manufacturer descriptions alone may not establish how much odor a particular unit removes.

How to compare models without an odor score
Because there is no widely used gas-removal rating and no product-specific head-to-head evidence here, a defensible βbestβ choice depends on documented specifications and how you will use the unit. Compare the exact model on these points:
- Particle CADR and coverage: Match CADR to the roomβs floor area and account for ceilings higher than eight feet. Do not interpret a larger CADR as proof of better odor removal.
- Filter construction: Confirm there is a mechanical particle filter and identify the gas-targeted media. Look for transparent information about carbon quantity or bed depth rather than relying on a generic carbon-layer claim.
- Replacement filters: Check availability, replacement interval, and price for compatible filters before buying. EPA says filters require regular replacement and overloaded filters work less well; exact schedules and costs vary by model.
- Noise at usable settings: Noise can determine whether you will keep the unit running. Check the manufacturerβs noise ratings, where published, at the fan speeds you expect to use. Higher speeds generally filter more air and tend to be louder.
- Operating cost and usability: Include replacement filters and electricity as well as purchase price. A powerful unit that is too noisy to run is less useful in practice.
- Technology and byproducts: Prefer mechanical filtration for smoke particles. Treat ozone-generating or other reactive technologies as a warning sign rather than an odor-removal shortcut.

Which purifier technologies should you avoid for smoke?
EPA does not recommend electronic air cleaners, photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), hydroxyl generators, or devices with UV components for smoke removal. Their particle performance may be unclear or they may not be designed to remove particles, and some can produce ozone or other harmful pollutants. Ionizers do not remove gases or odors and can leave charged particles deposited on surfaces; ozone is a lung irritant. How to get the most from a purifier
- Choose a unit sized for the room where it will operate, not just the whole homeβs advertised coverage.
- Run it at the highest speed you can tolerate and for as long as practical; more airflow and longer operation generally mean more air filtered.
- Replace particle and carbon filters according to the manufacturerβs directions, and sooner if they become overloaded or airflow declines.
- Clean surfaces and fabrics that retain smoke residue; air filtration alone does not address chemicals deposited on them.
For a central HVAC system, a compatible MERV 13 or higher filter may provide secondary whole-home particle filtration. Confirm with the equipment manufacturer or an HVAC technician that the system can handle it. This option does not establish removal of odor-causing gases. EPA covers this qualification in its cleaner-air-room guidance.

Can an air purifier make indoor smoking safe?
No. The EPA says prohibiting marijuana smoking inside or near buildings, vehicles, and other enclosed spaces is the only way to eliminate secondhand exposure and its associated health risks. Filtration and ventilation can reduce harmful substances released indoors but are unlikely to eliminate them. EPA describes secondhand marijuana smoke as a mixture of smoke from burning cannabis and smoke exhaled by the smoker; its components vary with the plant and how it is grown and used. It contains many of the same toxic and cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke, some in higher amounts, while research into marijuana smoke and secondhand exposure continues.
