A properly sized portable cleaner can capture some airborne particles, including some mold-generated particles, and a model with an appropriate activated-carbon filter may help reduce certain odors. If you notice a musty smell, investigate moisture and mold first; use a purifier only as a supplement.
What an air purifier can do in a basement
A portable air cleaner draws room air through filters and can reduce some airborne particles in the area it serves. A particle filter such as HEPA may capture mold spores and other particles that pass through it, but it does not remove mold growing on walls, stored items, or other materials. Nor does it remove the water source that lets mold grow. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says portable air cleaners may remove some particles generated by mold and may sometimes help reduce odors, but they do not address the cause of mold or musty smells: a building water or moisture problem. Filters also do not remove every pollutant. Source control and ventilation remain important. In a basement, that can mean correcting leaks or dampness, drying wet materials, and ventilating during activities that release fumes.
What to do when the basement smells musty
Treat a musty odor as a reason to inspect, not merely as an odor to cover up. The EPA states, “A moldy odor suggests that mold is growing in the building and should be investigated.” Its guidance is to find and fix the water source, clean mold from hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry those surfaces completely. Moldy absorbent materials may need to be replaced. Read the EPA’s guidance on what mold smells like.

- Look for moisture. Check for leaks, damp materials, condensation, and other signs of water intrusion. Investigate the area around the odor, including behind or beneath stored items where accessible.
- Stop the source. Repair leaks or address other water sources before relying on a cleaner to treat the air.
- Dry and clean affected materials. The EPA says water-damaged areas and items should be dried within 24–48 hours. Clean mold from hard surfaces with detergent and water, then dry completely; moldy absorbent items may need replacement.
- Monitor indoor humidity. The EPA recommends keeping relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. A humidity gauge can help you track conditions. See its guidance on biological contaminants and indoor air quality.
The EPA sums up the priority: “The Key to Mold Control is Moisture Control.” If the affected area is extensive or you are unsure how to address it safely, consult a qualified remediation professional.
Dehumidifier or air purifier: which should you use?
They serve different purposes. A dehumidifier removes moisture from the air; an air purifier filters some airborne particles and, if equipped with a suitable gas filter, may reduce some odors. If humidity is high or the basement is damp, address the moisture problem and use a properly sized dehumidifier as appropriate. A purifier can be an additional measure for airborne particles, not a replacement for drying, repairs, or mold cleanup. How to choose a basement air purifier
Choose a unit for the job it can actually perform: particle reduction in a defined room, with odor-related gas filtration only if it has an appropriate adsorbent filter. The EPA does not certify or recommend specific air-cleaner brands or models, so compare the specifications rather than relying on a mold-removal promise.
Match CADR to the room
Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) indicates how quickly a cleaner delivers filtered air for particles. Compare the unit’s CADR with the basement area it will serve. The EPA’s sizing table assumes an eight-foot ceiling; allow for higher ceilings, larger spaces, and open layouts when assessing whether a unit is suitable. CADR is a particle measure, not proof of odor or gas removal.

Check the particle filter and replacement supply
Look for a particle filter appropriate to your needs, such as HEPA filtration, and confirm that compatible replacement filters are available. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement and maintenance guidance; a filter that is overdue for replacement cannot be assumed to perform as intended.
Look for a real gas adsorbent if odor reduction matters
For gases and some odor-related compounds, the EPA recommends an activated-carbon or other absorbent filter designed for gases. The amount of adsorbent matters. There is no widely used consumer performance-rating system for gas removal, so a CADR figure alone cannot establish how well a model will reduce mustiness or other odors.

Consider runtime, noise, and ozone
A purifier intended to run for long periods should have an operating speed and noise level acceptable for the space. Avoid cleaners that intentionally produce ozone. The EPA says ozone at concentrations within public-health standards has little potential to remove indoor contaminants and is generally ineffective against indoor air pollution; ozone can irritate and damage lungs. Basements can contain stored chemicals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from products such as paints, resins, and paint thinners. Ventilate during painting, remodeling, and other activities that release VOCs instead of expecting a particle filter to remove those emissions. After basement remodeling, the EPA also advises checking combustion equipment to ensure it is not backdrafting. See its overview of VOCs and indoor air quality.
