An air purifier’s Auto mode adjusts fan speed in response to readings from its air-quality sensor; it does not guarantee that the unit detects every pollutant or keeps every room clean. Choose a purifier by matching its particle CADR to your room, checking whether its filters address the pollutants you care about, and weighing noise, energy use, replacement filters, and ozone information. There is no universally best model without comparable testing.
What does Auto mode do on an air purifier?
Auto mode uses an onboard sensor to change the fan speed based on the air-quality readings the purifier measures. For example, Coway says the Airmega 250/250S Smart Mode adjusts air speed according to air quality around the product. Its support documentation describes three speed levels for good, moderate/unhealthy, and very unhealthy readings. Those descriptions explain how the control responds; they do not establish that the sensor detects every kind of pollutant.
Auto mode can reduce the need to change fan settings manually, but it is not a substitute for choosing an adequately sized purifier or checking what its filters capture. If you need continuous particle removal, confirm how the device behaves at the speeds you would actually use, rather than assuming the automatic setting always runs at maximum output.
How big an air purifier do you need for your room?
Use the room’s floor area and the purifier’s Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) to assess particle-cleaning capacity. CADR is a particle measure: higher values indicate more particle filtration and suitability for a larger area. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gives these approximate CADR estimates for rooms with an eight-foot ceiling:

| Room area | Estimated CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 sq. ft. | 65 cfm |
| 200 sq. ft. | 130 cfm |
| 300 sq. ft. | 195 cfm |
| 400 sq. ft. | 260 cfm |
| 500 sq. ft. | 325 cfm |
| 600 sq. ft. | 390 cfm |
These are EPA estimates, not guarantees for every room. Higher ceilings can require more capacity. Check whether a maker’s coverage figure is tied to a particular number of air changes per hour; a square-foot number without that context may not describe the cleaning rate you need.
Use smoke CADR when fine particles matter
When comparing particle performance, check the CADR for the relevant particle category. Smoke CADR is especially useful when fine particles are a concern. Do not treat dust, pollen, or smoke CADR as a general score for removing gases or odors.

Does an air purifier remove odors and VOCs?
CADR measures particle cleaning, not broad gas removal. For gases and odors, look for activated carbon or another filter specifically intended for gas filtration. The EPA notes that there is no widely used performance rating system for gas-removal filters, so a claim to reduce odors or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is harder to compare across products than a particle CADR.
Check the filter type and the manufacturer’s stated target pollutants. A particle filter alone should not be assumed to remove gases, and no air cleaner removes every indoor pollutant. The EPA describes source reduction and clean-air ventilation as primary indoor-air measures, with filtration as a useful supplement.

How to compare Auto-mode purifiers without declaring a universal winner
The EPA says it does not certify or recommend specific brands or models. Without comparative testing, product specifications can help you narrow choices but cannot establish a best-in-class purifier. Compare candidates against the same practical criteria:
- Room and particle capacity: Match the room area to CADR, paying particular attention to smoke CADR when fine particles matter.
- Pollutant target: Distinguish particle filtration from gas and odor filtration; check for activated carbon or another gas-targeted filter if needed.
- Auto-mode behavior: Find out what the sensor measures and how the unit changes speed. Do not infer detection of pollutants the maker does not identify.
- Noise and energy: Compare sound and operating power at the fan settings you expect to use. A high-speed rating alone does not tell you how practical the unit will be in a bedroom or living space.
- Filter upkeep: Confirm the replacement-filter model, availability, stated service life, and recurring cost. Check washable-filter cleaning requirements too.
- Ozone information: Look for emissions information and applicable certification; avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone.
ENERGY STAR’s criteria require reporting CADR, filter type and replacement-filter model, operating power, and ozone emissions. These details provide useful comparison points, but they do not replace checking whether the purifier fits your room and pollutant needs.

Example: Coway Airmega 250S specifications
Coway publishes the following figures for the Airmega 250S. They are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results.
| Specification | Coway-published figure or feature |
|---|---|
| Smoke CADR | 249 cfm |
| Dust CADR | 261 cfm |
| Pollen CADR | 230 cfm |
| Coverage | 465 sq. ft. at four air changes per hour |
| Filtration | Washable pre-filter plus Max2 filter with activated carbon and HEPA |
| Max2 filter life | One-year expected life, per Coway; actual life can vary with conditions |
| Automatic settings | Smart Mode (Auto, Sleep, Eco) |
Use those figures to judge fit for your room and needs, not to infer that the Airmega 250S is the best purifier available. Its stated coverage is specifically tied to four air changes per hour, and its expected filter life is the manufacturer’s estimate.

Are ozone air purifiers safe?
Avoid air cleaners designed to intentionally produce ozone. The EPA describes ozone as a lung irritant and warns that some air-cleaning technologies may have ozone-emission potential. Check relevant CARB or AHAM information and the product’s emissions disclosures. ENERGY STAR criteria for qualifying models set a maximum measured ozone level of 50 parts per billion under the specified UL test; that is a criterion for qualifying products under that test, not a blanket description of every purifier.
How often should you replace an air purifier filter?
Follow the device maker’s maintenance instructions and check filters regularly. The EPA cautions that dirty or overloaded filters do not work well. Replacement timing depends on the product and use conditions, so a published service-life estimate is not a guarantee for every home. Before buying, identify the exact replacement-filter model and confirm that it is available at a cost you can sustain.
