No air freshener can fix the moisture problem behind a musty basement smell. The best first step is to find and address water intrusion, leaks, or damp materials. If the basement is too humid, a properly sized dehumidifier can help control moisture; fragrance is only an optional way to add a scent after the underlying issue has been addressed.
Why a musty basement smell calls for investigation
A moldy odor can be a clue that mold is growing, but smell alone cannot identify its source, the type of mold, or whether growth is hidden. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says a moldy odor should be investigated. Molds can produce microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that contribute to strong or unpleasant smells; the health effects of non-occupational indoor exposure to mVOCs are largely unknown. Start by looking for visible water, plumbing leaks, damp carpet or drywall, condensation, and signs that water is entering from outside or seeping through the floor. These are clues to investigate, not a diagnosis. The right repair depends on the source; it may involve fixing a leak or improving how water drains away from the foundation. What to use instead of an air freshener
Address water and dry wet materials
Repair leaks and deal with seepage or runoff so moisture does not keep returning. Dry water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold growth, as EPA advises. If mold is present, CDC advises cleaning it up and fixing the moisture problem. CDC also advises drying promptly and replacing carpet or upholstery that was soaked and cannot be dried right away. Use a dehumidifier if humidity is high
A basement dehumidifier is the most relevant product to consider when excess humidity is part of the problem. Choose a unit according to the manufacturer’s sizing guidance for the space; the appropriate capacity depends on the basement, and no particular model or capacity is established here. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and maintenance.
EPA’s general indoor-air guidance is to keep relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. A humidity monitor or hygrometer can help you check readings against that guidance, but it does not remove moisture or odors. EPA: Biological Contaminants and Indoor Air Quality.

When an air freshener is appropriate
After the moisture source has been addressed and damp materials dealt with, you can use a scented product if you simply prefer the fragrance. Sprays, gels, essential oils, and odor absorbers may change the room’s scent, but the official sources cited here do not establish that they eliminate basement mustiness, mold, or excess moisture. Do not use fragrance to mask an odor that remains unexplained.
