1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a U.S. living room measuring 300 square feet, start with an 8,000 BTU/h room air conditioner. ENERGY STAR’s sizing chart assigns 8,000 BTU/h to spaces from 300 up to 350 square feet; its band just below that boundary, 250 up to 300 square feet, calls for 7,000 BTU/h. Measure carefully, and include any connected area you intend to cool.
“Completely covered” is not a recognized air-conditioner sizing category. Here, the practical question is how to cool the full living area—not just the spot where the unit sits. An open plan, unusually high ceiling, strong sun, or extra occupants can change the capacity you need.
What size air conditioner do I need for a 300-square-foot room?
Use 8,000 BTU per hour (BTU/h) as the starting point for a room that measures exactly 300 square feet. ENERGY STAR’s guidance is based on an 8-foot ceiling. Its adjacent size bands show why a measurement at the boundary matters:
| Area being cooled | ENERGY STAR capacity guidance |
|---|---|
| 250 up to 300 square feet | 7,000 BTU/h |
| 300 up to 350 square feet | 8,000 BTU/h |
| 350 up to 400 square feet | 9,000 BTU/h |
These figures are a sizing starting point, not a promise that one capacity will suit every room. Measure the whole connected space you want to cool. If the living room opens directly into a dining area or kitchen, count those areas too rather than using the living-room footprint alone. ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner guidance and 2025 Most Efficient list provide the chart and related guidance.

Adjust for sun, shade, occupants, and a kitchen
ENERGY STAR advises these adjustments to its chart estimate:
- Reduce capacity by 10% for a heavily shaded room.
- Increase capacity by 10% for a very sunny room.
- Add 600 BTU/h for each regular occupant beyond two.
- Add 4,000 BTU/h if the room is used as a kitchen.
For ceilings higher than the chart’s 8-foot basis, consider additional capacity. These are guidance adjustments; consult the selected unit’s sizing and installation documents before buying.
Is 8,000 BTU enough for a 300-square-foot living room?
It is the appropriate initial target under ENERGY STAR’s stated sizing guidance when the area is 300 square feet and the room conditions are ordinary. Whether it is enough depends on the actual area being cooled and the room adjustments above. For example, a connected dining area increases the area; strong sun and regular occupants beyond two also change the estimate.
Do not automatically buy a larger unit as insurance. ENERGY STAR warns that an oversized room AC can cool the air before removing enough humidity, leaving the room cool but clammy. Oversizing can also waste energy and cost more without improving comfort.

Window, portable, or ductless: which type fits the room?
There is no universal winner. Choose based on the opening, exhaust route, installation plans, and whether you need to cool one room or create zones across a longer-term installation.
| Type | What to plan for | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Window AC | Confirm the opening dimensions, support requirements, electrical supply, and a secure seal around the installed unit. | A straightforward option for cooling a room when a suitable window is available. |
| Portable AC | Provide a route for the exhaust hose and seal the window opening as directed by the manufacturer. | When placement flexibility matters or a window unit is not practical, provided there is a workable exhaust route. |
| Ductless mini-split | Plan for more involved installation; consider whether zoning or longer-term cooling justifies it. | When you want a more permanent arrangement or separately controlled zones. |
These are category tradeoffs, not a comparative performance ranking. The manufacturer overviews from Midea and Danby describe considerations for different AC types.
How should I compare capacity, efficiency, and comfort?
- Capacity: Match the rated capacity to the full area and room conditions. For a portable unit, compare DOE SACC capacity with other SACC figures, not with an ASHRAE rating as though the numbers were equivalent.
- Efficiency: Check ENERGY STAR certification where it applies, and compare the relevant efficiency measure for like product types. Certification is a useful screening tool, not a substitute for sizing and fit.
- Comfort and controls: Consider noise, fan direction, schedules, and variable-speed or inverter operation. ENERGY STAR says variable-speed room AC compressors can vary output continuously and describes potential quiet-operation and energy-saving benefits. Features alone do not prove a unit will cool this particular room better.
- Fit and ownership: Check the unit’s dimensions, electrical requirements, warranty, expected use, local electricity price, and any installation costs. Confirm the exact model’s specifications before purchase.
Some ENERGY STAR-certified U-shaped or saddle-style window units straddle the sill. This design can leave the window able to open and position the compressor outside the room; check the unit’s capacity and exact fit if those characteristics matter to you.
Does a portable AC’s 12,000 BTU rating mean the same thing as its DOE rating?
Not necessarily. Portable ACs may show both an ASHRAE capacity figure and a DOE SACC figure. Use the SACC figure when comparing one portable model with another on that basis; do not treat a larger ASHRAE number as directly comparable to SACC. Danby’s guidance discusses the ratings, but its explanations are manufacturer guidance, not a universal conversion for every model.

Why does installation and sealing matter?
A poorly fitted unit can let conditioned air escape and outdoor air enter. ENERGY STAR states: “An improperly installed room air conditioner leaks as much air as a 6-square-inch hole, increasing energy costs and making your home less comfortable.” Follow the chosen model’s instructions for support, drainage, and sealing. Before installation, verify the window opening, electrical supply, and any required support hardware.
What do published energy-savings estimates tell a homeowner?
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) gives an illustrative comparison for a 12,000 BTU/h room AC—not an 8,000 BTU/h unit sized for this room. In its example, the ENERGY STAR case has estimated lifetime energy-cost savings of $167, and the best-available case $189, versus the less-efficient comparison product. The estimates assume 750 operating hours per year, a nine-year product life, and electricity at 11.1 cents/kWh, the average at federal facilities as of July 2024; they use December 2024 model-efficiency levels. DOE notes that more efficient models may have entered the market since the example was prepared. These figures are not a household forecast. See DOE FEMP’s room air conditioner guidance.
How to choose a unit for your living room
- Measure the full area. Include connected spaces you want the unit to cool, not only the main seating area.
- Estimate capacity. Start with ENERGY STAR’s size band, then account for ceiling height, sun or shade, occupants, and kitchen use.
- Choose a type that fits. Check window access for a window unit, a vent route for a portable unit, or installation needs for a ductless system.
- Compare like ratings. For portable units, compare DOE SACC figures. For other room ACs, check applicable ENERGY STAR certification and the label’s relevant efficiency measure.
- Verify the exact model. Confirm capacity, certification, dimensions, electrical requirements, noise information, warranty, and installation instructions before buying.
- Install and seal it as directed. Proper fit and support are part of cooling the intended area effectively.
The 2025 ENERGY STAR Most Efficient list is a year-specific designation, not a permanent ranking of every current 8,000 BTU/h model. Product specifications, certifications, prices, rebates, and availability can change. No single model can be called best for every 300-square-foot living room without checking its current specifications against the room and installation.
