For a central forced-air air conditioner or HVAC system, choose a filter rated MERV 13—or the highest rating the system’s fan and filter slot can accommodate. Check the equipment manual or ask an HVAC technician before upgrading. A higher-rated filter can capture more of some airborne particles, but it is not a guarantee of dust-free rooms.
What is the best air conditioner filter for dust?
For a central forced-air system, the best choice is a filter that fits the slot correctly and has the highest MERV rating the equipment can handle. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises choosing MERV 13 or the highest rating compatible with the system. The equipment manual or an HVAC technician can help determine that limit. EPA’s guide to air cleaners in the home and its MERV rating guidance do not endorse specific filter brands or models.
“Dust” includes particles of different sizes, and a filter only captures airborne particles that pass through it. It does not remove dust already settled on floors or furniture. No MERV rating alone guarantees a visible reduction in household dust.
What MERV tells you—and what it doesn’t
MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, rates a filter’s ability to capture particles in specified size ranges using an ASHRAE test method. A higher MERV means better capture in those tested ranges; it does not predict the percentage of dust that will disappear from a home.

These figures describe performance under the rating test, not whole-house removal. The EPA technical summary also says MERV 13 and higher filters meet at least 50% removal efficiency for 0.3–1 µm particles under the rating requirements. See the EPA’s MERV rating table and explanation.
Can you use a MERV 13 filter in your AC?
Only if your particular system can accommodate it. A higher-efficiency filter may not be suitable for every fan, filter slot, or installation. Confirm the compatible rating in the equipment manual or with an HVAC technician rather than assuming that a higher MERV is always better.

Use the filter dimensions and thickness specified for your system. The filter should fit snugly so air does not bypass it, but it should not need to be bent or crushed to fit. Follow both the equipment maker’s and filter maker’s instructions. EPA MERV guidance and its home air-cleaner guide explain these compatibility and fit considerations.
How to choose a replacement filter
- Find the specified size and depth. Check the existing filter and equipment manual. Match the required dimensions; do not force a different size into the slot.
- Confirm the compatible MERV rating. Use the manual or ask an HVAC technician for the highest rating your system can handle. If it is compatible, MERV 13 is EPA’s recommended target.
- Compare like with like. Compare filters by their stated MERV rating, dimensions, thickness, and manufacturer’s replacement instructions. Proprietary labels such as MPR or FPR are not identical numerical scales to MERV.
- Install it in the correct orientation and check the fit. Follow the airflow arrow and installation directions on the filter and equipment. Make sure it sits snugly without gaps, bending, or crushing.
How often should you change an AC filter?
Follow the filter and equipment manufacturers’ directions. The EPA’s consumer guide reports that manufacturers typically recommend replacement every 60 to 90 days, but this is a common interval—not a universal schedule. Filters load with dirt at different rates, and a heavily soiled filter may need to be changed sooner. EPA states that all filters require periodic replacement to function properly.

Do window air conditioners and ductless units filter room air?
Window air conditioners and wall-mounted ductless units generally have limited filters intended to keep the equipment clean, rather than to remove fine particles from room air. Do not buy a higher-MERV central HVAC filter for one of these units unless its manufacturer specifies that the unit accepts it. EPA’s home guide describes the distinction.

A portable air cleaner is a separate option for reducing airborne particles in a room. Choose one with a particle clean air delivery rate (CADR) appropriate for the room area; EPA’s guide provides an estimate based on an eight-foot ceiling. Use EPA’s sizing guidance rather than selecting a unit by appearance or filter rating alone.

Filtration works only while air passes through the filter. Running the HVAC system longer can move more air through its filter, but EPA notes that this may raise electricity costs and, during cooling, make humidity control less reliable. Reducing particle sources and ventilating with clean outdoor air when appropriate are also part of improving indoor air quality. EPA’s guide to air cleaners in the home covers these approaches.
