If upfront price is your priority, the Troy-Bilt Z42 is the lowest-priced new residential model in this shortlist at a manufacturer-listed $2,999. That makes it a useful starting point—not a universal “best” choice. A 42-inch deck, your gates and obstacles, terrain, warranty, and local service access all matter as much as sticker price.

Affordable zero-turn mowers at a glance

These manufacturer-listed U.S. prices are not perfectly comparable: some are MSRPs, one is a campaign price, and others are cash-price figures. Taxes, dealer fees, delivery, optional equipment, local inventory, and promotions may change what you pay. Confirm the exact configuration and current terms with the manufacturer or a local dealer.

Which mower is the best affordable fit?

There is no established single winner under matched independent test conditions for these models. The manufacturer information supports a price-and-specification shortlist, not a claim that one mower cuts better, lasts longer, or handles every yard better than the others.

For the lowest listed price: Troy-Bilt Z42

The Z42 is the price-led option here, with a 42-inch twin-blade deck and 547cc engine. Its listed warranty includes three years of limited coverage, and the product page also describes a limited-lifetime frame warranty. Read the warranty details for exclusions and claim requirements, and verify the current local price and available equipment.

#1 Best Overall
EGO Power+ Z6 Zero Turn Electric Riding Lawn Mower, 42" Deck - ZT4214L
  • PEAK POWER TECHNOLOGY: The EGO cordless riding mower combines the power of up to six EGO 56V ARC Lithium batteries to deliver the power equivalent of a 24-horsepower gas engine.
  • LONG RUNTIME: Electric zero turn mower cuts up to 1.5 acres on a single charge with six included 6.0Ah batteries.
  • WIDE FRAME DESIGN: Gives the EGO riding lawn mower exceptional balance on slopes, while its deck suspension system delivers a quiet cut.
  • PREMIUM FEATURES: Color digital screen to customize your mowing displays speed, driving mode, blade speed, and battery status. Pair with the EGO Connect app to monitor your battery status, charge time, and more.
  • THREE DRIVING MODES: Control, Standard, and Sport. Drive the EGO zero turn radius riding mower at up to 8 MPH.

For a 42-inch fabricated deck: Husqvarna Z242F

The Z242F combines a 42-inch fabricated deck with a 21.5 hp Kawasaki engine. Its displayed $3,419.10 campaign price is below the $3,799 MSRP shown on the manufacturer page, but a campaign price can change or expire. Use the current manufacturer page and a dealer quote rather than assuming that offer remains available.

For a wider deck at a lower listed MSRP: Husqvarna Z246

The Z246 has a 46-inch deck and a 22 hp Briggs & Stratton engine, with a listed $3,399 MSRP. A wider deck may reduce passes on open lawn, but it also needs more clearance around gates, trees, beds, and storage areas. Check the mower’s actual width and turning access before choosing it over a 42-inch model.

For more configurations or electric power: Exmark Quest

Exmark lists the Quest E-Series at $3,799 cash price, S-Series at $4,899, and V-Series electric at $6,799. These are distinct models and powertrain choices, not interchangeable versions of one specification. Compare the exact deck, engine or electric setup, warranty, and dealer quote for the model you are considering.

For a broader deck-size range: Kubota Z200 series

Kubota lists Z200 series MSRP starting at $5,549, with configurations spanning fabricated welded decks from 42 to 54 inches. The starting price is not a quote for every deck size or configuration; ask a dealer to price the exact mower and options.

How to check whether a zero-turn will work on your property

Measure the route, not just the lawn

  • Measure the narrowest gate, path, and opening the mower must pass through, including posts, hinges, and other obstructions.
  • Check the mower’s overall width for the precise model and deck configuration; deck width alone may not describe its widest point.
  • Consider room to turn around trees, landscape beds, buildings, and parked equipment. A mower that fits the lawn may still be awkward to store or maneuver into it.

Match deck width to your layout

A wider deck can cover more ground on open areas, while a narrower deck may be easier to fit through tight access points and around obstacles. The right trade-off depends on the shape of your lawn and the route from storage to the cutting area; do not choose on deck width alone.

Check terrain and slope limits in the manual

Do not infer hill safety from marketing descriptions or engine power. Read the operator’s manual for the exact model’s slope limits and safe operating instructions before mowing slopes, and follow its guidance for the conditions on your property.

Compare warranty and local service

Ask what is covered, for how long, and how claims are handled. Check whether nearby dealers can service the mower and obtain parts, and confirm who provides warranty support. The purchase price is only one part of ownership if service access is limited.

What to confirm before buying

  1. Identify the exact model and configuration. Confirm deck size, engine or electric powertrain, included equipment, and any accessories.
  2. Get a current out-the-door quote. Ask whether the figure is MSRP, a campaign price, or a cash price, and clarify taxes, dealer fees, delivery, and optional equipment.
  3. Verify fit and access. Measure gates, storage space, and tight turns, and check the mower’s overall dimensions for the configuration quoted.
  4. Read the operator’s manual and warranty. Confirm operating limits, especially on slopes, and understand coverage and service procedures.
  5. Confirm stock and support locally. Check availability, delivery timing, dealer service, parts, and the applicable warranty path before paying.

A first-time buyer working with a budget such as $6,000 can use that figure to set a ceiling, but should still compare total quoted cost and fit rather than treating the budget as a target price. A public discussion using the phrase “trying to buy my first zero turn with $6k” illustrates that kind of question; it does not establish how common the budget or buying situation is: Reddit discussion.
