The right 900 CFM range hood depends less on its headline airflow rating than on whether its mounting style, coverage, duct route, and installation requirements suit your kitchen. The models below are documented options—not a tested ranking. Their published specifications do not establish which one captures cooking emissions best in a real installation.
What to compare before choosing a 900 CFM hood
- Mounting style and coverage: Match an insert, under-cabinet, ceiling, or island design to the kitchen layout. Compare hood width with the cooktop and the position of its burners; a nominal 900 CFM rating does not establish capture performance.
- Duct route: Check the exact model’s permitted duct diameter, outlet direction, route length, and bends. A transition adapter does not by itself prove that a smaller existing duct is acceptable.
- Sound specifications: Compare only with care. Some manufacturers give sones, others dBA, and the fan speed and measurement conditions may differ.
- Cleaning and controls: Look for documented filter type, removal and cleaning instructions, and a control style that works for the people using the kitchen.
- Installation conditions: Confirm mounting structure, clearance above the cooktop, electrical requirements, and whether makeup air is required by the code adopted where you live.

The specifications below come from manufacturer product pages or a catalogue. They are not common-condition test results, and listed maximum airflow should not be treated as measured airflow after installation.

Which configuration suits your kitchen?
Insert: Victory Star
An insert can fit into a compatible custom hood enclosure. The Star is documented in 36-, 42-, and 48-inch widths. Its manufacturer lists four airflow steps, an 8-inch duct, baffle filters described as dishwasher-safe, and rotary controls. Confirm that the enclosure and duct route match the installation instructions before selecting it.
Under-cabinet: Victory Verona or KSTAR K1039
The Verona offers a wider range of listed widths, from 30 to 60 inches, and published stepped airflow and sones ratings. KSTAR’s 30-inch K1039 is listed at 900 CFM with dBA ratings by speed. These sound figures use different units and should not be treated as directly comparable. The KSTAR page lists an 8-inch vertical duct and an 8-to-6-inch adapter; do not assume an existing 6-inch duct is acceptable without checking the model’s installation requirements.

Flush ceiling: Victory Horizon
The Horizon is the documented ceiling-mounted option, in 30- and 36-inch widths. Its manufacturer recommends 48–60 inches above the cooktop. A ceiling installation also makes structural support and the route through the ceiling important parts of the fit decision.
Island: Blue Ocean RH668I
The Blue Ocean catalogue lists 36-inch and 30-inch RH668I models; for the RH668I-36 it lists 900 CFM, 65 dB, a 6-inch pipe, and ducted/ductless conversion. Treat those as catalogue claims rather than independently verified performance, and confirm the exact model’s current instructions and permitted installation configuration.

How ducting affects a 900 CFM rating
Maximum airflow on a product page is not a guarantee of installed airflow. The listed models specify different duct arrangements: Victory’s examples call for an 8-inch duct, KSTAR lists an 8-inch vertical duct and an adapter, and Blue Ocean’s catalogue lists a 6-inch pipe for the RH668I-36. These specifications are model-specific, not interchangeable recommendations.
Broan-NuTone advises using metal duct and not reducing duct below the selected hood’s specification; its guidance notes that more powerful hoods can require duct up to 10 inches. Sound ratings are not a like-for-like contest
Victory publishes sones, KSTAR publishes dBA by speed, and Blue Ocean’s catalogue lists 65 dB. These are not directly comparable figures: the units differ, and rating speeds and conditions may not match. Broan-NuTone explains that sones describe perceived sound, says lower sones indicate a more comfortable listening environment, and notes that the speed used for a rating can vary. Use each manufacturer’s full rating context rather than inferring that one listed number proves a quieter installed hood.

For high-output gas cooking, Broan-NuTone recommends at least 1 CFM of ventilation per 100 BTU. That is manufacturer guidance, not a universal code requirement or an independent sizing test. Victory describes the Star and Verona as supporting up to 90,000 BTU; treat that as a manufacturer claim and compare it with the actual cooktop or range output and installer advice.

The 2024 International Residential Code includes a conditional makeup-air provision for exhaust systems capable of more than 400 CFM when one or more fuel-burning appliances that are neither direct-vent nor mechanically drafted are within the dwelling’s air barrier. The provision calls for makeup air at a rate approximately equal to exhaust. A 900 CFM hood exceeds that threshold, but the provision’s conditions matter. The 2024 IRC is a model code, not proof of the rule in force at a particular home. Check the locally adopted code edition, amendments, and exceptions with the building department or a qualified installer. See the 2024 International Residential Code, Chapter 15.
