A 600 CFM label does not tell the whole story: it may describe a blower’s stated capacity rather than certified airflow under a particular test condition. For a remodel or replacement, compare the rating basis, noise at the same operating point, duct dimensions, and whether recirculation parts are included. The manufacturer documents reviewed here support a specification-based comparison—not a claim that any hood won independent testing.
What does “600 CFM” mean on a range hood?
CFM means cubic feet per minute, a measure of airflow. But a manufacturer’s “600 CFM” blower figure should not automatically be treated as certified airflow delivered under a stated test condition. The distinction matters when comparing products: one hood’s headline blower number and another hood’s certified rating may describe different things.
Elica’s 2023 Como specification sheet lists a 600 CFM internal blower and separately distinguishes blower performance from certified ratings. Its 2023 Mezzano sheet lists a 600 CFM internal blower, while its certified rating table gives 400 CFM at high speed and 170 CFM at working speed. Elica says Mezzano performance claims are not AHAM certified but were established in accordance with an HVI standardized test procedure, and directs readers to the AHAM Certified Product Directory for certified ratings. Broan’s E60 specification sheet lists 600 CFM at high speed and a maximum blower figure of 650. Those are manufacturer-listed figures; they should not be compared as though they were the same kind of certified rating as another model’s airflow values. See the Broan Elite E60 specification sheet.

How the documented examples compare
The following are examples from manufacturer documents, not a complete market survey. Figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

How loud are 600 CFM range hoods?
Sones describe perceived loudness, but a figure is useful only with its model and rating context. The Elica Como sheet lists 6.8 sones without a speed in the cited specification. Broan gives a manufacturer-stated maximum of 13.5 sones at high speed for the E60 single blower. Elica’s Mezzano certified table lists 8 sones at high speed and 2 at working speed. These figures are not a controlled, like-for-like comparison: the documents do not give a common test basis and operating point for all three products.

For a practical comparison, look for noise figures at more than one speed, note whether they are certified or manufacturer-stated, and consider whether you expect to use the hood mostly at its highest setting. Do not assume that a single sones number describes every operating speed.

Check duct compatibility before choosing a hood
The hood must connect to a suitable exhaust path. The documented examples use different ducts: Como specifies a 6-inch round top discharge; the E60 single blower uses a 3¼-by-10-inch duct; Mezzano specifies a 6-inch vertical duct. A difference in shape, size, or discharge direction can affect whether an existing route works or needs a transition or other changes.
- Confirm the exact model’s duct size and discharge direction in its specification sheet and installation instructions.
- Compare those requirements with the existing duct route, including its size, bends, and termination. Do not assume an adapter makes every route acceptable; follow the model’s instructions.
- Use approved range-hood ducting. Broan’s FAQ states: “NEVER use 4" dryer duct or any plastic duct on a range hood installation.” See Broan-NuTone’s range-hood FAQ.
Ducted exhaust or recirculation?
A ducted installation sends exhausted air outdoors through a duct route. Recirculation is a different configuration and may require a model-specific kit and filters; do not assume the hood includes them or that a kit for one model fits another.

Check the exact model and configuration for the required kit and replacement filters before planning the installation.

Hood width and mounting height
Confirm the hood’s width and the installation height allowed by its manual, then compare them with the cooktop and the available space. The manufacturer documents cited here do not establish a universal sizing or mounting-height rule, so use the exact model’s instructions rather than applying a generic rule of thumb.
Make-up air and local requirements
A powerful exhaust system may raise a make-up-air question, but the cited sources do not establish a universal CFM threshold that applies everywhere. Broan recommends using the HVI-certified standard 0.1-inch static-pressure CFM rating when determining make-up-air need. That manufacturer guidance is not a substitute for the applicable local code or the exact product instructions; confirm requirements with the local authority or a qualified installer.

Other model-specific details
Before selecting a hood, verify the exact variant’s controls, lighting, grease filters, cleaning instructions, warranty, and included components in its current documentation. The product sheets cited here do not provide enough evidence for a reliable comparison of those features across the examples.
How to choose among these examples
- If your existing route is 6-inch round and exits through the top: Como’s listed duct configuration may be relevant, subject to its installation instructions and the route’s suitability.
- If you need a rectangular duct connection: the E60 single-blower specification lists 3¼-by-10-inch ducting; verify the exact configuration and installation requirements.
- If certified airflow figures are central to your comparison: Mezzano’s sheet presents certified high- and working-speed ratings separately from its 600 CFM internal-blower figure.
- If you plan to recirculate: compare the exact kit and filter requirements with the installation configuration, not just the hood’s airflow label.
Zephyr’s Ombra ZOM-E30CS appears in a catalog as a 600 CFM blower and mentions airflow control and an optional ductless recirculating kit.
