Best 48-Inch Range Hoods: A Buyer’s Guide to Kitchen Ventilation

Choosing a 48-inch range hood means matching the hood, blower and duct system to the cooking appliance, kitchen layout and local requirements.

The right 48-inch range hood is the one that works with your cooking appliance, cabinet or wall layout, blower, duct route and local code—not necessarily the one with the largest advertised CFM. The models below illustrate different configurations, not tested or ranked winners. Compare the complete ventilation system and verify the current installation documents before choosing.

How to compare 48-inch range hoods

Start with the installation, not the airflow number. A 48-inch width does not define a hood’s capture area, blower arrangement or duct requirements. Compare the exact hood and compatible blower as a system, then check whether it fits the kitchen and the way the range will be used.

  • Installation style and capture geometry: Identify whether you need a wall-mount hood, under-cabinet model, island hood or insert. Check the actual hood width and depth, its position over the cooking surface, and the clearance required by that model.
  • Blower: Determine whether the motor is integrated or sold separately. Where the manufacturer offers in-hood, inline or remote blowers, confirm which units are compatible with the exact hood and which are included in the quote.
  • Duct route: Check outlet location, duct diameter, permitted routing and termination against the model’s installation guide. A duct that is too small or cannot follow the specified route can make a listed airflow figure a poor basis for comparison.
  • Cooking appliance and habits: Consider the range or cooktop model and output, the kind of cooking you do, and how often burners operate at the same time. Thermador’s February 2021 planning guide identifies appliance BTU and duct length and size as factors in planning airflow; use it as context, not as a substitute for current product instructions or local requirements: Thermador planning guide and support documents.
  • Filters and upkeep: Compare filter type, removal and cleaning instructions, and replacement availability. Baffle and mesh filters are not interchangeable descriptions of maintenance needs.
  • Controls, lights and sound: Compare the specific speed modes, controls and lighting. Treat sound ratings as comparable only when the manufacturers state matching measurement conditions.
  • Total project scope: Include the hood, blower, ductwork, duct cover, roofplate or other specified components, electrical work, any make-up-air equipment required, and installation.

Example 48-inch hood configurations

These manufacturer-listed examples show why a single “best” hood cannot be selected from width or CFM alone. Specifications are model-specific and are not a standardized test of installed airflow or capture performance.

Example Manufacturer-listed configuration What to verify for your project
Bertazzoni 48-inch wall-mount glass-front hood 600 CFM motor; three speeds plus booster; removable stainless mesh filters described as dishwasher safe; ducted or recirculating use; 6-inch duct. Manufacturer product specification reviewed in 2026. Bertazzoni product page Confirm the recirculating option suits the intended use, and check the proposed duct route and current installation instructions.
Thermador HPCN48NS Ducted hood body; blower sold separately, with listed integrated, inline and remote blower options from 600 to 1300 CFM; 10-inch top duct; 30-inch specified clearance above the cooking surface; washable stainless commercial-style baffle filters. Specification sheet accessed in 2026. Thermador HPCN48NS specification sheet Price and match the hood body, compatible blower, duct cover, roofplate where applicable, and connector cable. Use the current installation guide for clearances and fit.
BlueStar Manhattan 48-inch hood Stated width of 47 7/8 inches, with manufacturer tolerance; top discharge only; minimum 18-inch duct noted for installation; listed in-hood 600/1200 CFM, inline 800/1200 CFM and remote 1400 CFM choices. Manufacturer product specification reviewed in 2026. BlueStar Manhattan range hood Check available space and top-discharge route, then confirm the exact blower and duct requirements in current documents.
Dacor 48-inch chimney wall hood Four-speed fan; manufacturer lists 1,200 CFM with a 780 CFM convertible specification, plus heat sensors and automatic-on functionality. Manufacturer product specification reviewed in 2026. Dacor wall hoods Ask how the convertible airflow setting is implemented and check whether the hood and duct arrangement suit the cooking appliance.
Broan E6448TSS 48-inch under-cabinet hood Manufacturer lists a maximum 1,290 blower CFM, compatibility with automatic make-up-air dampers, external-blower variants and a non-duct kit option. Broan E6448TSS product page Match the quoted model configuration to the blower and installation being proposed; do not assume all variants share the same setup.
Vent-A-Hood 48-inch models The manufacturer support index lists multiple 48-inch products and airflow configurations, including examples of 300 CFM / 450 CFM equivalent and 600 CFM / 900 CFM equivalent. Vent-A-Hood support index Keep actual CFM distinct from manufacturer “equivalent” claims and check the specification sheet for the exact model.

Why advertised CFM is not enough

CFM figures in the comparison are manufacturer specifications for particular products or blower options; they do not establish how much air a completed installation will move or how effectively it will capture cooking emissions. The cited examples also call for different configurations: Bertazzoni specifies a 6-inch duct for its listed 600 CFM product, Thermador’s HPCN48NS specifies a 10-inch top duct and requires a separately purchased blower, and BlueStar lists top discharge with a minimum 18-inch duct statement. Those are product-specific requirements, not interchangeable recommendations.

Ask the installer to identify the exact hood and blower combination, duct size and route, and termination plan in the project scope. Do not select a blower by comparing its highest listed CFM with another product’s figure while ignoring compatibility or the manufacturer’s duct instructions.

Fit, clearances and system components

Hood dimensions and clearance affect whether the selected unit can be installed as intended. Thermador’s cited HPCN48NS specification lists 30 inches above the cooking surface, but that figure applies to that model; the current installation guide for the chosen hood should govern. Confirm cabinet dimensions, hood depth, discharge location, and access to components before construction or ordering.

Some hood bodies do not include a blower. Thermador lists compatible blower choices and optional roofplates, duct covers and connector cable for the HPCN48NS. Treat those as model-specific parts: ask the supplier or installer to confirm each component matches the exact hood and site layout rather than assuming accessories fit across a product family.

Make-up air and local code

Some jurisdictions require make-up air when a ducted exhaust system exceeds a locally specified airflow. Thermador’s February 2021 planning guide notes that local building codes may impose such requirements, but it does not establish a universal threshold for every location or project. Check the current rules with the local building department and have a qualified installer determine whether the planned system needs make-up air. Broan lists compatibility with automatic make-up-air dampers for the E6448TSS, but compatibility alone does not determine what a particular installation requires.

A practical selection and installation checklist

  1. Record the cooking appliance. Note the exact range or cooktop model and its output, along with how the kitchen is used.
  2. Choose the hood form and position. Confirm wall, island, under-cabinet or insert installation; actual dimensions; capture geometry; and clearance in the selected model’s current documents.
  3. Specify the blower arrangement. Identify whether it is integrated, inline or remote, whether it is included, and the precise compatible model.
  4. Plan the duct before finalizing the hood. Verify outlet, diameter, route, elbows and termination against that hood-and-blower combination’s instructions.
  5. Resolve code and project needs. Confirm local make-up-air rules and account for required electrical work and system components with the installer.
  6. Compare complete quotes. Ensure each quote covers the same hood, blower, ductwork, covers and other required parts so the apparent price or CFM comparison is meaningful.
