How to Choose the Right 27-Inch Washer for a Better Laundry Room

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 27-inch washing machine is the standard full-size washer for most American homes. If you are replacing an old machine, planning a laundry-room remodel, or trying to fit a washer into a closet, 27 inches is usually the width you will see on the sales floor. The real question is not only which washer is best. It is whether the machine fits the room, the floor, the drain, the electrical service, the dryer layout, and the way your household actually does laundry.

For most families, the practical sweet spot is a 27-inch washer with about 4.5 to 5.0 cubic feet of capacity. That size handles regular weekly laundry, towels, and queen bedding without pushing the machine into oversized, deeper cabinet dimensions. Larger 5.2 to 5.5 cubic foot machines can be useful for bulky bedding, pet blankets, and big households, but they often need more depth, better floor control, and more careful delivery planning.

On our job sites, the most expensive washer mistakes rarely come from choosing the wrong cycle package. They come from buying by width only, then discovering the door will not open, the drain is wrong, the shutoffs are buried, the dryer vent is in the way, or the second-floor laundry area shakes during the spin cycle. This guide approaches 27-inch washers the way a builder does: appliance performance matters, but the room has to work first.

What “27-Inch Washer” Really Means

A 27-inch washing machine is not a compact washer. It is the dominant full-size U.S. footprint. Many top-load models are about 27 to 27.8 inches wide and roughly 27 to 28.4 inches deep. Many front-load models are about 27 inches wide but often run 32 to 34.5 inches deep before you account for hoses, the door swing, and rear clearance.

#1 Best Overall
SAMSUNG Stacking Kit for 27” Wide Front Load Washer and Dryer Combo, Small Space Saving Solution for Stackable Laundry Machine Sets, All Parts Included, SKK-8K
  • LAUNDRY STACKING KIT: Compatible with most Samsung 27" wide front load washers and dryers and saves space in your home; To utilize your limited space efficiently, use the stacking kit to fasten and organize your units with the dryer on top of the washer
  • MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SPACE: Securely fasten the dryer on top of the washer for efficiency
  • DIMENSIONS: Measurements are 6.93” Width x 2.48” Height x 22.83” Depth
  • EASY INSTALLATION: Easy to install and all parts come included

That depth difference is where homeowners get caught. A laundry closet that looks generous on width can still be too shallow for a front-load washer, especially when the dryer vent, supply hoses, shutoff box, baseboards, trim, and door hardware are included. A washer that technically fits in the opening can still fail the daily-use test if the door cannot open past 90 degrees or the detergent drawer hits a closet jamb.

Capacity also varies by design. In 2026, many 27-inch top-load washers fall around 4.1 to 4.8 cubic feet. Front-load washers commonly land around 4.5 to 5.2 cubic feet. Large impeller top-loaders can reach about 5.5 cubic feet, but the cabinet and tub depth may make loading harder for shorter users.

Before comparing brands, measure the space like a remodeler. Write down the actual appliance width, appliance depth, appliance height, rear hose clearance, door or lid swing, laundry closet interior depth, doorway width, stair turns, hallway pinch points, and final service clearance. If the washer is going upstairs, measure the stair landing and handrail clearance too. Delivery crews do not solve framing problems at the front door.

Best 27-Inch Washer Type by Project

The best 27-inch washing machine depends on the room and the household. A rental property does not need the same washer as a second-floor laundry suite. A tight closet has different priorities than a large mudroom with a folding counter. Here is the practical breakdown we use when helping homeowners plan laundry spaces.

Project Type Best 27-Inch Washer Choice Why It Works Watch Closely
Tight laundry closet Front-load washer, if depth allows Can be stacked or placed under a counter; efficient water use 32 to 34.5 inch depth, door swing, dryer vent offset
Budget replacement Top-load agitator or basic impeller model Lower upfront cost, simple controls, easier standing access Higher water use, less gentle action, lid clearance
Large family 4.8 to 5.2 cu. ft. front-load or impeller top-load Good balance of capacity and efficiency Cycle times, floor vibration, actual usable depth
Pet bedding and bulky loads Large-capacity impeller top-load or front-load with bulky cycle More tub room for blankets, covers, and washable beds Deep tubs can be hard to unload; confirm bedding fit
Second-floor laundry Efficient front-load with strong spin control Lower water use and better extraction when properly installed Vibration transfer, pan, leak sensor, accessible shutoffs
Rental property Simple top-load washer Durable, familiar, usually less expensive to replace Drain condition, hose replacement schedule, tenant misuse
Full laundry-room remodel Matched front-load pair or planned top-load layout Lets you coordinate counters, cabinets, venting, outlets, and drains Permits, rough-in heights, dryer power, future service access

Front-Load vs. Top-Load 27-Inch Washers

A 27-inch front-load washer is usually the efficiency winner. It tumbles clothes through a smaller amount of water, extracts more water during the spin cycle, and is the natural choice for stacking or placing under a folding counter. ENERGY STAR reports that certified clothes washers use about 20 percent less energy and 30 percent less water than regular washers. Full-size certified units average about 14 gallons per load compared with about 20 gallons for standard machines.

Certified front-load washers are especially strong on resource use. ENERGY STAR reports that certified front-loaders use about 50 percent less energy and water than top-load agitator washers, and about 25 percent less energy and water than top-load impeller washers. If you do six loads a week, those savings add up over the life of the machine, especially in homes with high water, sewer, or electric rates.

The tradeoff is installation and use. Front-loaders are deeper, heavier, and more sensitive to leveling. They also need door clearance and regular gasket care. If you install one on a weak second-floor structure without checking vibration, the fast spin cycle can make the room feel wrong even when the machine is technically operating as designed.

A 27-inch top-load washer is often cheaper upfront and easier to load from standing height. Top-load agitator machines are the simplest and usually the least expensive. They work well for rental properties, budget replacements, and homeowners who prefer familiar controls. Impeller top-loaders use a low-profile wash plate instead of a center post, creating more tub room and generally using less water than agitator machines. They sit between front-loaders and agitator top-loaders on efficiency and convenience.

The main top-load issue is vertical clearance. If the washer sits below a cabinet, shelf, or low closet header, confirm the lid can open fully. Do not assume a 27-inch top-loader works just because the floor footprint is open. We have seen nice laundry cabinets become a daily nuisance because the lid hits the underside of a shelf at 70 degrees.

Capacity: What Size Do You Actually Need?

Washer capacity is measured in cubic feet, but the better question is what you wash every week. A 4.1 to 4.5 cubic foot washer is enough for many couples, small families, and normal clothing loads. A 4.5 to 5.0 cubic foot washer is the best all-around range for many households because it handles towels, school clothes, work clothes, and bedding without forcing every load into the maximum setting.

A 5.2 to 5.5 cubic foot washer makes sense if you regularly wash king bedding, washable comforters, pet blankets, sports gear, or large family loads. But bigger is not automatically better. Large top-load tubs can be difficult to reach into, and oversized machines can encourage overloading. Overloading reduces cleaning performance, increases wear on bearings and suspension parts, and can create severe out-of-balance spin cycles.

For a typical household, we like a 27-inch washer in the 4.5 to 5.0 cubic foot range unless there is a specific reason to go larger. That range keeps the machine full-size without turning the laundry room into an appliance storage problem.

Real 2026 Costs for 27-Inch Washers and Installation

In 2026, a budget 27-inch top-load washer commonly starts around $570 to $800 at national retailers. Mainstream ENERGY STAR top-load and front-load models commonly fall around $800 to $1,100. Premium smart, steam, large-capacity, or specialty-finish machines commonly run $1,100 to $1,400 or more. Some category listings include outliers up to $2,000 to $4,000, usually because of specialty, commercial-style, compact combo, or premium configurations.

Washer and dryer sets commonly run about $1,000 to $2,300 for the appliances only, with side-by-side sets usually cheaper than stacked or premium front-load pairs. That does not include delivery upgrades, haul-away, new braided hoses, drain pans, pedestals, stacking kits, dryer cords, gas connectors, vent corrections, permit fees, or utility work.

Scope Typical 2026 Cost What Is Usually Included
Washer only, budget top-load $570 to $800 Basic washer purchase before parts and installation
Mainstream ENERGY STAR washer $800 to $1,100 Common top-load or front-load washer purchase
Premium 27-inch washer $1,100 to $1,400+ Smart features, steam, larger capacity, specialty finishes
Washer/dryer set $1,000 to $2,300 Appliance pair only, before complex hookup work
Basic replacement labor $100 to $300 Existing code-compliant hookups, simple set-in-place work
New hookups where none exist $650 to $2,500 Plumbing, electrical, venting, access, and repair vary by site
Permit allowance $150 to $300+ Varies by city, scope, and trade permits required

Simple replacement is the least expensive path. If the water supplies, standpipe, electrical outlet, dryer vent, and floor are already right, installation labor may be only $100 to $300 for a washer and dryer. But moving laundry to a new location is a different project. National cost guides place new washer and dryer hookups commonly around $650 to $2,000, and another 2026 estimate puts the range around $650 to $2,500 with an average near $1,200. A broader May 2026 national estimate for installing a washing machine falls around $1,039 to $2,137 per machine because it reflects site conditions, utility work, and project variability.

The biggest cost drivers are existing hookups versus a new location, distance to drain and water lines, slab versus framed floor access, drywall and cabinet repair, 120-volt washer circuit work, 240-volt electric dryer needs or gas dryer needs, dryer vent routing, flood pan and drain planning, second-floor vibration control, brand, finish, capacity, delivery access, and local labor rates.

Fit Checklist Before You Buy

Before ordering any 27-inch washer, take photos of the existing hookups, the data plate area if replacing an old unit, the drain standpipe, the outlet, the dryer connection, and the full laundry space. A contractor can often identify problems quickly from those photos before you spend money on delivery.

Measure the appliance path, not just the final opening. Start at the driveway or garage, then measure the exterior door, interior doors, hallway turns, stair width, stair landing, handrail pinch points, and laundry room entry. A 27-inch-wide washer can still fail delivery if the carton will not make the turn.

Inside the laundry area, measure clear width, clear depth, ceiling height, shelf height, baseboard projections, door casing, bifold door tracks, shutoff box location, standpipe location, outlet location, dryer vent position, and the washer door or lid swing. For a front-load washer, confirm there is space to open the door and stand in front of it with a basket. For a top-load washer, confirm the lid opens fully under cabinets or shelves.

Rear clearance matters. Hoses and vent offsets need room. If the dryer sits beside the washer, a rigid or semi-rigid dryer vent may push the dryer forward, which can make the washer look out of alignment or prevent closet doors from closing. If you are installing pedestals, include their height in the total measurement and confirm the washer door still clears adjacent trim.

Plumbing, Drain, and Electrical Details Homeowners Should Not Ignore

A laundry washer is not just a plug-in appliance. It is a water-using fixture connected to pressurized supply lines, a drain, an electrical circuit, and often a nearby dryer with a separate vent or gas connection. In remodel work, those systems matter as much as the washer model.

Drain and standpipe

Current plumbing practice commonly calls for a 2-inch standpipe for a washing machine drain. Older homes may have undersized, poorly vented, or partially restricted laundry drains that worked with an older low-output washer but overflow with a newer high-discharge machine. If the laundry standpipe gurgles, backs up, smells, or has a history of overflow, correct that before installing a new washer.

Do not shove the drain hose too far into the standpipe and do not seal the standpipe airtight around the hose. Either mistake can cause siphoning, drainage problems, or overflow. The drain hose should be secured according to the washer manufacturer’s instructions while still allowing the standpipe to breathe.

Water supplies and leak control

Replace old rubber hoses with braided stainless steel washer hoses, and use new washers at the connections. Old hoses are cheap until they fail. In laundry rooms above finished living space, we like to see accessible shutoffs, a washer pan where appropriate, and a leak sensor. If a pan is installed, plan the drain route correctly rather than treating the pan as decoration.

Shutoffs must be reachable. A shutoff box buried behind a stacked pair or deep cabinet is not useful during a leak. If the layout prevents access, consider relocating the box as part of the remodel.

Electrical and GFCI protection

Washer areas typically require proper laundry circuit planning and GFCI protection under modern electrical rules. Do not assume an old outlet is acceptable because the old washer ran on it. If you are moving the laundry, adding a new outlet, changing dryer power, or discovering ungrounded or damaged wiring, bring in a licensed electrician.

The washer usually uses a 120-volt circuit, while an electric dryer often requires a 240-volt circuit. A gas dryer still needs electrical power and a proper gas connection, and it still needs a code-compliant vent unless it is a listed ventless design. Your washer choice can affect the dryer layout, so plan the pair together.

Second-Floor Laundry: Extra Rules for a 27-Inch Washer

Second-floor laundry is convenient, but it is less forgiving. A fast-spinning front-load washer can expose weak framing, poor leveling, and loose subfloor connections. The machine may be fine, but the room can transmit vibration through joists, drywall, and adjacent bedrooms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before placing a 27-inch washer above finished living space, check the floor structure, machine leveling, pan strategy, hose quality, and shutoff access. Anti-vibration pads can help in some installations, but they do not fix a weak floor. If the laundry area feels springy when you walk across it, address the structure before assuming a heavier washer will settle it down.

For upper-floor laundries, we recommend braided hoses, a pan or leak sensor, accessible shutoffs, careful leveling, and a realistic review of the spin cycle. If the dryer vent run is long, confirm it can meet the dryer manufacturer’s maximum equivalent length after elbows are counted. Poor dryer venting creates long dry times, moisture problems, lint buildup, and service calls that have nothing to do with the washer itself.

Stacked, Side-by-Side, or Under-Counter?

A 27-inch front-load washer is usually the right choice for stacking. Use the manufacturer’s stacking kit and confirm the exact matching dryer model before ordering. “Stackable” does not mean universally compatible. Brackets, screw locations, cabinet design, and dryer depth must match.

Stacked laundry can free up floor space in closets and small rooms, but it makes service access harder. Make sure shutoffs, the outlet, drain, gas valve if present, and vent connection can still be reached. If a technician has to remove the entire stack just to shut off water, the layout needs work.

Side-by-side layouts are easier to service and often cheaper. They also allow a counter over front-load machines, which gives you a folding surface without adding a separate table. If you choose top-load machines, you give up the counter but gain easier standing access and simpler loading for many users.

Pedestals raise front-load washers to a more comfortable height and add storage, but they add cost and height. Check the final elevation against cabinets, windows, shelves, and the dryer door. In compact rooms, pedestal drawers can conflict with door swings and baskets.

Features Worth Paying For

Pay for features that match how you wash. High spin speed is valuable because it removes more water before clothes reach the dryer. That can reduce drying time, especially with towels and bedding. Good load sensing helps manage water use. A sanitize or allergen cycle can be useful for families with specific needs, but it is not necessary for every household.

Steam can help with some stains and refresh cycles, but it should not be the only reason to jump to a premium model. Smart app controls are useful if you actually want cycle alerts or remote monitoring, but they do not compensate for poor fit, weak drainage, or a bad vent. A quiet motor and strong suspension matter more in second-floor laundry rooms than in a garage or basement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For pet owners, look for a washer with a bulky bedding cycle, strong rinse options, and an accessible filter or maintenance routine if the model uses one. For rentals, simple controls, common parts, and predictable cycles often beat premium features. For large families, capacity, spin extraction, and reliability matter more than specialty finishes.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

A basic washer swap can be a reasonable DIY project if the existing hookups are code-compliant, the floor is sound, the drain works, the outlet is correct, and the machine can be moved safely without damaging flooring or trim. Use new braided hoses, level the washer carefully, check for leaks at both supply valves, run a test cycle, and watch the drain during discharge.

Hire a pro when you are adding or relocating hookups, changing the drain, opening walls, modifying electrical circuits, moving a gas dryer, adding a 240-volt dryer circuit, changing vent routing, installing laundry above finished space, or correcting old plumbing. Also hire help if the machine is going upstairs and the delivery path is difficult. A 27-inch washer can weigh well over 200 pounds, and damaging stairs, railings, tile, or the machine costs more than proper handling.

Permits may be required when washer hookups are added or moved, and requirements vary by jurisdiction. A realistic permit allowance is often $150 to $300 nationally, but some cities charge more depending on the trades involved. Plumbing, electrical, gas, and mechanical vent work can each trigger separate requirements. If the project changes utilities, ask before the wall is closed, not after.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The first mistake is buying by width only. Width is only one dimension. Depth, rear clearance, lid swing, door swing, dryer vent offset, baseboards, shutoff access, and service space matter just as much.

The second mistake is assuming every 27-inch washer fits every laundry closet. Many front-load machines need 32 to 34.5 inches of depth before hoses and clearances. A shallow closet can turn a good washer into a bad installation.

The third mistake is reusing old rubber hoses. Replace them. The cost is small compared with water damage. If the laundry is upstairs, add leak detection and make sure shutoffs are reachable.

The fourth mistake is ignoring the drain. A new washer can discharge faster than an old one. If the standpipe is undersized, poorly vented, or partially clogged, the problem will show up after delivery, not on the showroom floor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fifth mistake is skipping the dryer. Washer shopping often happens as a pair, and the dryer controls the vent, electrical or gas needs, depth, and closet door clearance. Plan both sides before you order either appliance.

Our Bottom Line

The best 27-inch washing machine for most homes is a 4.5 to 5.0 cubic foot ENERGY STAR front-load washer if the space supports the depth, door swing, and vibration control. It gives the best balance of capacity, water efficiency, spin extraction, and future laundry-room planning. For homeowners who prefer lower upfront cost, simpler operation, or easier standing-height loading, a 4.1 to 4.8 cubic foot top-load washer is still a strong choice, especially in basement, garage, rental, and straightforward replacement applications.

Do the room check before the brand comparison. Measure the delivery path. Photograph the hookups. Confirm drain size and outlet condition. Replace old hoses. Plan for pan or leak sensing where water damage risk is high. If you are moving laundry or opening walls, involve the right trades early. A good washer should make laundry easier for the next 8 to 12 years, not create a construction problem the day it arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 27 inches the standard width for a washing machine?

Yes. In the U.S., 27 inches is the dominant full-size washer width. Depth usually matters more than width because many front-load washers are about 32 to 34.5 inches deep before rear hose clearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much clearance do you need behind a 27-inch washer?

Follow the washer manufacturer’s installation manual, but plan for rear hose clearance, shutoff access, and dryer vent offset if the dryer sits beside it. In many rooms, the washer depth plus several inches of working clearance is more realistic than the cabinet depth alone.

What is better: a 27-inch front-load or top-load washer?

A front-load washer is usually better for efficiency, stacking, counter installation, and spin extraction. A top-load washer is often cheaper, simpler, and easier to load from standing height. The better choice depends on your room depth, budget, household size, and accessibility needs.

How much does it cost to install a washing machine in 2026?

A basic replacement with existing code-compliant hookups commonly costs about $100 to $300 for labor. New washer and dryer hookups where none exist commonly run about $650 to $2,500 depending on plumbing, electrical, venting, wall repair, access, and local labor rates.

What size drain does a washing machine need?

Modern laundry plumbing commonly uses a 2-inch standpipe for a washing machine drain. Older or undersized drains may overflow when paired with newer high-discharge washers, so drain condition should be checked before installation.

Can a 27-inch washer fit in a laundry closet or be stacked?

Often, yes, but only if the closet has enough depth, door clearance, rear utility clearance, and service access. For stacking, use the washer manufacturer’s stacking kit and confirm the exact matching dryer model before ordering.
