Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor U.S. shoppers searching for “220V window air conditioners,” the key is to check the appliance label and your electrical supply: manufacturers often list these units as 230V or 208/230V, and those labels are not a guarantee that a particular unit will work with your outlet. Compare voltage, room capacity, efficiency, window fit, and installation requirements before buying. Whirlpool’s WHAW242BW is one documented 24,000 BTU, 230V example, but it requires a special 230V outlet and is not a universal fit.
What “220V” means when shopping in the U.S.
“220V window air conditioner” is common shopper wording, but manufacturer listings may use 230V or 208/230V instead. Do not choose by the number in a search phrase alone. Check the exact model’s electrical specifications and the appliance nameplate, then confirm that your circuit and receptacle are compatible.
For example, Whirlpool says its WHAW242BW requires a special 230V electrical outlet and will not operate from a standard 115V household outlet. A plug adapter does not fix a mismatch between the appliance’s electrical requirements and the supply. If you are uncertain about the circuit or receptacle, get qualified local guidance before purchasing or installing the unit. Whirlpool WHAW242BW product page
How to choose a model that fits your room and window
1. Match capacity to the room
Start with the room’s square footage and compare it with the manufacturer’s capacity guidance. ENERGY STAR warns: “An oversized air conditioner is less effective, wastes energy and does not provide better cooling.” It explains that an oversized unit may cool a room before removing enough humidity, leaving it cool but damp or clammy. Do not treat a higher BTU figure as automatically better. Select capacity for the space you need to cool, and use the guidance for the particular model when available.
2. Check efficiency figures, not just a “best” label
When comparing eligible models, look for CEER and annual energy use alongside cooling capacity. ENERGY STAR’s 2025 Most Efficient product listing provides fields including capacity, CEER, annual energy use, dimensions, and feature information for listed models. Check the individual model record for its current specifications rather than assuming that a label alone predicts your energy use. ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2025 room air conditioner listings
ENERGY STAR also describes variable-speed compressors as able to vary compressor speed instead of repeatedly switching between full output and off; it says this can regulate temperature quietly and save significant energy during operation. This is general guidance, not a measured result for every model. ENERGY STAR room air conditioner buying guidance

3. Measure the window opening
Compare the specific unit’s width, height, and depth with your window opening and the installation instructions. ENERGY STAR Version 4.1 calls for window-unit sealing materials and installation information intended to minimize air leakage and thermal losses. Its criteria also specify tightly fitting insulated side curtains. These are criteria in that specification, not a claim that every unit on the market meets them. 4. Confirm what comes in the box
Check the model’s listed contents before buying mounting or sealing accessories separately. Whirlpool lists a window mounting kit as included with the WHAW242BW; other models may differ. Whirlpool WHAW242BW product page

Quick Recap
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Read the exact model’s voltage requirement and compare it with the available circuit and receptacle.

- Compare CEER and annual energy use in the model’s listing when those figures are available.
- Measure the window opening and check the unit’s dimensions and installation instructions.
- Look for documented variable-speed capability if that feature matters to you.
- Confirm included mounting and sealing parts before purchasing additional accessories.
- Check whether the model is currently manufactured and available.
