Best 1200 CFM Range Hoods: How to Choose the Right Fit

A 1200 CFM rating alone does not guarantee effective kitchen ventilation. Compare fit, duct requirements, noise, capture evidence, and locally applicable makeup-air rules before choosing a hood.

A 1200 CFM range hood is worth considering only if its capture area, duct route, and installation conditions suit your kitchen. The number is a manufacturer-stated airflow capacity—not proof of the airflow or capture performance you will get once the hood is installed. Before choosing a model, check the hood’s fit and duct requirements, usable noise levels, and whether local rules call for makeup air.

Do you need a 1200 CFM range hood?

Not necessarily. A high maximum CFM rating may be useful for a particular cooking setup, but it does not by itself establish that a hood will capture cooking emissions effectively in your kitchen. Hood dimensions, how it sits over the cooking surface, the duct design, and the installation all matter.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Indoor AirPlus Verification Requirements Version 2, issued in July 2024, recommends at least 70% capture efficiency for range hoods and microwave-range hoods, as tested. That is a performance recommendation, not evidence that either of the models below meets it. The cited product information does not establish comparable capture-efficiency results.

What to compare before buying

Capture coverage and installation fit

Check the hood’s width and depth against the cooking surface, along with the installation type and mounting constraints. An insert designed for a cabinet enclosure and an under-cabinet hood are not interchangeable simply because both list 1200 CFM. Confirm the exact model dimensions and installation manual against your planned enclosure and range. The available information does not establish one sizing rule that fits every range and kitchen.

Airflow evidence, not just the maximum number

Manufacturers may publish a maximum CFM figure, but that should not be confused with independently measured airflow in a defined test or with performance after installation. Broan-NuTone explains that HVI-certified ratings offer a standardized basis for comparison and that installation can affect airflow in its Airflow 101 guide. Check whether a rating is certified and under what conditions; do not assume a listed maximum is the airflow your installed system will deliver.

Duct size and route

Both example models below specify a 10-inch duct. That requirement needs to be compatible with the route available in your home and the manufacturer’s installation criteria. Ask the installer to review the full route—not only the connection at the hood—before you commit to a model.

Noise at the speeds you will use

Compare sound ratings at operating speeds that are relevant to your household, and only compare ratings taken under comparable conditions. Victory lists the Hurricane at 1.2 to 6.6 sones; that range does not establish how it compares with another model measured differently.

Filters and maintenance

Bertazzoni describes the example insert’s metal baffle filters as removable and dishwasher safe. Follow the care instructions for the exact model you buy rather than assuming all filters or dishwasher-safe claims apply across a product line.

Two documented 1200 CFM examples

These models illustrate different installation formats and manufacturer-listed specifications. They are examples, not independently tested winners; the available information does not support ranking one above the other.

Check makeup-air rules before installation

High-capacity exhaust can affect the air balance in a home, and makeup-air requirements depend on the applicable code and installation conditions. The 2021 International Residential Code is model-code text, not proof of the rules adopted in your jurisdiction. Its M1503.6 provision applies when one or more gas, liquid, or solid-fuel-burning appliances that are neither direct-vent nor mechanical-draft are within the dwelling unit’s air barrier: in that stated condition, each exhaust system capable of exhausting more than 400 CFM must be provided mechanically or passively with makeup air at approximately the exhaust rate. The provision also addresses makeup-air location and dampers. See the 2021 IRC, Chapter 15 for the model-code language.

Broan-NuTone likewise advises matching duct diameter to the hood manufacturer’s requirements and notes that higher CFM may increase noise and may require makeup air depending on local codes in its Kitchen Ventilation Buying Guide. Have your installer check the locally adopted code and the project conditions with the building department. Do not assume that every hood above 400 CFM automatically triggers the same requirement, or that a model-code provision applies unchanged where you live.

Verify certifications and product claims

ENERGY STAR says covered range hoods must meet its specification at each possible configuration, and a model must be certified by an EPA-recognized certification body before it may be labeled and marketed as ENERGY STAR. Its Ventilation Fans Key Product Criteria does not establish that either example here is certified. Check the exact model in the relevant certification listing rather than inferring certification from its CFM rating or manufacturer specifications.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Measure the cooking area and installation space. Confirm the hood’s width, depth, mounting arrangement, and enclosure fit using the exact model documentation.
  2. Plan the duct route. Compare the specified duct diameter with the route your home can accommodate, and have the installer check it against the manufacturer’s criteria.
  3. Compare useful operating settings. Consider sound at the speeds you expect to use; treat published noise figures as comparable only when their rating conditions match.
  4. Confirm performance evidence. Distinguish maximum manufacturer-published CFM from certified or measured airflow and from installed capture performance.
  5. Resolve code and makeup-air questions. Ask the local building department or qualified installer which adopted requirements apply to your project and whether a makeup-air system is needed.
  6. Verify the final model details. Check the current manual, dimensions, included configuration, filter-care instructions, and any certification claim before purchasing.
