For a 115-volt room air conditioner, first confirm the exact model’s voltage and window fit, then choose its cooling capacity for the room. Current retailer listings surface five 12,000 BTU/h window-unit candidates: Midea MAW12U1QWT, Windmill 12W2Wi, Midea MAW12S1YWT, LG LW1222IVSM and Frigidaire GHWW125TE1. Those listings identify models to investigate—not tested winners. Compare their precise specifications and check live price and availability before buying.

Which 115-volt window AC models are worth comparing?

A retailer category filtered for large, ENERGY STAR, 115 V window units surfaced the models below. Because candidate discovery is not the same as verifying a product’s full specifications, the table distinguishes what the listing establishes from what still needs confirmation. Confirm the model number, voltage, capacity, fit and current availability on the manufacturer’s product page or in its manual before purchase.

The retailer result is a starting point, not proof that a particular configuration is in stock or that every listed feature applies to the exact unit offered. Do not transfer efficiency figures, room-area claims, noise ratings or other specifications from a similar-looking model number.

How much cooling capacity does the room need?

ENERGY STAR’s room-AC chart bases its recommendations on an 8-foot ceiling. Its published ranges include:

Room area Recommended capacity
100 up to 150 sq ft 5,000 BTU/h
150 up to 250 sq ft 6,000 BTU/h
250 up to 300 sq ft 7,000 BTU/h
300 up to 350 sq ft 8,000 BTU/h
350 up to 400 sq ft 9,000 BTU/h
400 up to 450 sq ft 10,000 BTU/h
450 up to 550 sq ft 12,000 BTU/h
550 up to 700 sq ft 14,000 BTU/h

These are sizing recommendations, not a guarantee of comfort in every building. Account for ceiling height, room shape, insulation, airflow, sun exposure, regular occupants, cooking heat and whether adjoining spaces remain open. ENERGY STAR recommends adjusting capacity down 10% for heavy shade and up 10% for very sunny rooms; add 600 BTU/h for each regular occupant beyond two, and 4,000 BTU/h for a kitchen. See the ENERGY STAR room-AC sizing guidance for the full chart and advice.

Why a larger unit can be the wrong choice

ENERGY STAR warns that “Bigger is not always better!” An oversized unit can cool the air before removing enough humidity, leaving a damp, clammy-feeling room. It also says oversizing wastes energy without providing better cooling. Choose capacity for the space and its conditions rather than buying the largest unit that fits the budget.

How should you compare efficiency, noise and controls?

Compare the exact model’s current ENERGY STAR certification and published CEER and annual energy-use figures when those data are available. For example, ENERGY STAR’s results for the specific Midea MAW12V1WBK-T show 12,000 BTU/h, CEER 16.0 and estimated annual energy use of 562.5 kWh. Those figures apply to MAW12V1WBK-T only; they are not specifications for the similar-sounding MAW12U1QWT or any other candidate listed above. Check the ENERGY STAR certified room air conditioner results by exact model number.

Efficiency and operating noise depend on the specific model and operating conditions. The retailer candidate listings do not establish comparable noise ratings or CEER values for all five units, so a fair comparison requires each manufacturer’s documentation. Likewise, confirm what “smart” controls include on the exact model rather than assuming a feature from a product-family name.

Frigidaire 5,000 BTU Window-Mounted Air Conditioner, Cools Up to 150 Sq. Ft., Quiet Operation, Effortless Temperature Control, 2 Fan Speeds, Auto Restart, White
  • Effortless Cooling: Achieve optimal comfort with customizable temperature settings and two fan speeds; Effortless Temperature Control helps to maintain your preset temperatures for consistent comfort
  • Easy Maintenance: Keep your air conditioner running efficiently with the easy-to-clean washable filter, designed to capture dust from the air for long-lasting performance
  • Undisturbed Comfort: Experience a peaceful home environment with a quiet performance at 52 dBA – ideal for bedrooms or small spaces up to 150 sq. ft.
  • Effortless Convenience: Benefit from the Auto Restart feature, which automatically restores the unit's previous settings once power is restored to the window air conditioner
  • Hassle-Free Operation: The extra-long three-prong power cord eliminates the need for extension cords, while the adjustable side panels easily extend to best fit your window, ensuring a secure installation with optimal efficiency and airflow

ENERGY STAR explains that a conventional compressor cycles between maximum capacity and off, while a variable-speed compressor can adjust output continuously. Its guidance says variable-speed operation can regulate temperature quietly and save significant energy; that is general program guidance, not a comparative test of these five candidates. ENERGY STAR also describes U-shaped or saddle-style units that bracket the window and can leave it operable, with the compressor outside the room in most cases. Verify that a particular unit uses that design before relying on those benefits. See ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner guidance.

What should you verify before buying a 115-volt unit?

A retailer filter is not enough to establish electrical or installation compatibility. Check the exact model’s product page and manual against your room, window and electrical supply.

Frigidaire 6,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner with Remote Control, Cools Up to 250 Sq. Ft., Quiet Operation, Eco Mode, 3 Fan Speeds, Auto Restart, White
  • Customizable Cooling: Achieve optimal comfort with custom temperature settings, 6-way directional airflow, and three different fan speeds
  • Easy Maintenance: Effortlessly adjust settings with the remote control and keep your AC unit working efficiently with Clean Filter alerts that notify you when it's time to clean the washable dust filter
  • Energy-Efficient Performance: Save energy with Eco Mode while maintaining a comfortable temperature and reduce energy consumption with Sleep Mode, which gradually increases the temperature overnight
  • Consistent Comfort: This window air conditioner operates at just 52 dBA, providing quiet cooling that makes it ideal for bedrooms or small spaces up to 250 sq. ft.
  • Effortless Convenience: Set the 24-hour on/off timer to match your schedule and enable Dry Mode to remove excess moisture from the air, creating a more comfortable environment
  • Voltage and electrical requirements: Confirm that the exact model is rated for your supply and follow its manual’s electrical instructions. Do not assume a category label applies to every configuration under a product family.
  • Window type and opening: Check the window style and the unit’s stated minimum and maximum opening dimensions. Measure the actual opening, not just the sash width.
  • Unit size, weight and support: Confirm exterior and interior dimensions, weight, and any required brackets or other support before planning installation.
  • Drainage and cords: Follow the manual’s drainage directions and its restrictions on extension cords or adapters; do not assume an accessory is permitted.
  • Seal and weather protection: Use the insulation materials included with the unit and seal the gaps as directed. ENERGY STAR’s Version 5.0 room-AC specification expects window models to ship with weather stripping and/or gaskets appropriate to their intended installation applications.

ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner product criteria describe the sealing-material expectation. The product manual remains the authority for the chosen unit’s installation method and requirements.

How to choose among the candidates

  1. Measure the room and assess its conditions. Use the ENERGY STAR chart as a starting point, then account for shade, sun, occupants, kitchen heat and other conditions.
  2. Check the electrical and window match. Find the exact SKU’s voltage, opening range, dimensions, weight and support requirements in its current product details and manual.
  3. Compare verified performance data. Look up the exact model’s certification, CEER, annual energy-use estimate and published operating noise where available; do not substitute data from a related model.
  4. Review the full installation instructions. Check drainage, electrical restrictions, sealing materials and the required installation style before purchase.
  5. Confirm the current offer. Recheck the exact model number, configuration, price and stock on the live product page, since retailer listings can change.

One model not included as a current candidate is the GE AEM05LX: GE’s official product page says that model is no longer being manufactured, despite describing it as an ENERGY STAR 115 V room AC. See GE’s AEM05LX product page.
