If you want a straightforward countertop microwave, start with a 1.0–1.2-cu.-ft. model advertised at about 1,000 watts, with sensor cooking, manual power levels, a removable turntable and dimensions that suit your counter. The Toshiba EM131A5C-BS is a promising exact-1,000W value candidate on paper; the Panasonic NN-SN686 is a 1,200W inverter alternative for shoppers who prioritize lower-power control. Neither wattage nor a feature list alone proves which oven will heat best in your kitchen.

This guide focuses on U.S. countertop models and published specifications, manufacturer documentation and comparative coverage—not hands-on testing. Check the current model listing, manual, dimensions and retailer terms before buying: product details and availability can change.

Toshiba EM131A5C-BS A simple, feature-rich countertop microwave around the 1,000W class 1.2 cu. ft.; 12.4-inch turntable; smart humidity sensing, six sensor menus, ten power levels, one-touch start, mute mode and easy-clean interior Toshiba’s page presents multiple wattage fields, including an inconsistent output-power entry. Confirm the exact output terminology on the model label or manual before treating it as a verified 1,000W output model.
Panasonic NN-SN686S / NN-SN686SR Frequent defrosting and cooking that benefits from inverter low-power control 1.2 cu. ft.; Panasonic identifies the line as a 1,200W inverter microwave with Genius Sensor functionality This is a 1,200W alternative, not an exact-1,000W match. Panasonic’s support page lists one year of parts and labor plus four additional years of magnetron parts coverage.
Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 Buyers seeking microwave, convection and air-fryer functions in one appliance Multifunction countertop oven; approximately 20.5 × 20.1 × 12.6 inches, according to the product information summarized in comparative coverage It is not a simple 1,000W microwave. More functions bring a larger footprint, more complexity and a different price class.

These are different buying profiles rather than a laboratory ranking. Bon Appétit’s 2026 countertop coverage likewise distinguishes everyday microwaves from premium combination ovens instead of treating wattage as the only measure: see its comparative coverage.

What does “1,000 watts” mean on a microwave?

Microwave wattage may refer to cooking output—the microwave energy delivered into food—or electrical input, the power drawn from the outlet. Input is usually higher than output. Product names and retailer filters often advertise a wattage without making the distinction clear, so compare the manufacturer’s specification and model manual rather than assuming every “1,000W” label describes output.

BLACK+DECKER Microwave Oven Countertop, 1.1 Cu.Ft, 1000W, Stainless Steel
  • Pre-programmed buttons for popcorn, potato, pizza, frozen vegetable, beverage and dinner plate.Frequency : 60 Hz
  • 1000 Watts Output with 10 power settings, clock and kitchen timer, 30 seconds express cooking, Input power: 1600W
  • Large LED digital display, easy-to-read control panel, child safety lock, interior light, removable 12.4” glass turntable
  • Push-button door release for easy access
  • Dimensions (L x W x H): 20.6” x 14.8” x 11.8”; Color of door frame is stainless steel, enclosure is black

Output affects cooking speed, but it is not a complete performance score. Food quantity, starting temperature, moisture, container shape, arrangement and standing time all influence results. Package directions may assume a particular oven output; follow the package’s adjustment guidance when your oven differs, and check for doneness rather than relying on time alone. A 1,200W inverter oven may offer useful lower-power control, while a conventional model around 1,000W may be simpler and less costly.

Choose the right kind of microwave for the installation

  • Countertop: Usually the simplest installation. It needs a stable, level surface and the clearances specified by its manufacturer.
  • Over-the-range: Combines cooking with a ventilation hood and light, but requires suitable cabinetry, electrical provision and installation.
  • Built-in: Intended for cabinetry and may require a compatible trim kit; do not assume a countertop model can be enclosed.
  • Convection or air-fry combination: Adds cooking modes, but costs more, takes more counter space and adds cleaning and operating complexity. Breville describes its Combi Wave 3-in-1 as a combination appliance, not a basic microwave.

How much capacity and counter space do you need?

Use cubic feet as a first filter, then check the turntable and cavity measurements. The same stated capacity does not guarantee that two ovens accept the same plate or baking dish.

Stated capacity Often suits Trade-off
0.7–0.9 cu. ft. Dorms, offices, single portions and tight counters Less room for large plates and cookware
1.0–1.2 cu. ft. General-purpose use in many households Measure the turntable and cavity for your regular dishes
1.3–1.6 cu. ft. Larger plates, family portions and bigger cookware Requires more counter area
2.0 cu. ft. or more High-capacity needs Can be substantially larger than needed for routine reheating

Before ordering, measure the counter’s usable width, depth and height, then account for the door, handle and manufacturer-required ventilation space. Measure your largest regular dish and check the oven’s interior height, turntable diameter and door-opening direction. A 9-by-13-inch dish is not guaranteed to fit merely because the listed capacity sounds large. The Toshiba EM131A5C-BS is specified at 1.2 cu. ft., with a 12.4-inch turntable and approximately 20.5 inches of width; consult its manufacturer listing for current dimensions and clearance requirements.

Sensor cooking and inverter technology do different jobs

Sensor cooking automates a choice

Sensor programs detect moisture or steam released by food and use that signal to estimate when a cooking cycle should end. Sensor reheat, sensor cook and popcorn presets can simplify routine use; automatic defrost and one-touch start are separate conveniences. Sensors are not a substitute for checking doneness. Very small portions, dry food, irregular shapes, unusual containers or uncovered food may produce less useful readings.

The Toshiba EM131A5C-BS advertises smart humidity sensing, six sensor menus, ten power levels, easy defrost, one-touch start and mute mode. Feature descriptions are manufacturer claims; they do not establish that every food or portion will finish perfectly.

Inverter technology is intended to regulate lower power

An inverter system is designed to deliver a more continuous lower level of microwave power instead of relying solely on full-power bursts followed by pauses. That can be useful for defrosting or delicate foods, but does not guarantee perfectly even heating. Turntable design, food placement, stirring, standing time and controls still matter. A conventional microwave can be adequate for everyday reheating.

Which features are worth prioritizing?

  1. Sensor reheat or cook: Helpful for common meals, with manual checking still needed.
  2. Ten power levels and accessible manual controls: Let you set lower power and time when a preset is unsuitable.
  3. Removable turntable and easy-clean interior: Make routine cleanup easier.
  4. Mute mode: Useful in bedrooms, offices and open-plan homes.
  5. Clear display, interior light and comfortable door operation: Affect daily usability more than a long menu list.
  6. Child lock: Consider it in households where children may operate the controls.
  7. Adequate turntable diameter: Check against the plates and containers you actually use.

App connectivity, voice control, decorative finishes and extensive auto menus may be worthwhile to some buyers, but they are secondary if the main job is reliable reheating. Air-fry or convection modes make sense when you will use them; otherwise they add cost, bulk and cleaning demands.

Check the outlet, clearance and support before buying

Do not infer electrical requirements from advertised cooking wattage. Check the installation manual for the specific model, including voltage, input rating, grounding and clearance. Use a properly grounded outlet, and do not use an extension cord unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Whether a dedicated circuit is needed depends on the appliance and installation; follow the manual and local electrical rules, and ask an electrician about unusual wiring or a heavily loaded circuit.

The Toshiba listing specifies 120V/60Hz operation and displays separate wattage fields, illustrating why output and input should not be conflated. Confirm current specifications in the manufacturer listing. Also check return terms, warranty coverage, seller and stock before ordering. Panasonic lists one year of parts and labor and four additional years of magnetron parts coverage for the NN-SN686 line; warranty terms are not a measure of long-term reliability.

Use and clean a microwave safely

For more consistent cooking

  1. Set the oven on a stable, level surface and preserve the clearance required by its manual.
  2. Make sure the turntable and support ring are correctly installed.
  3. Use cookware labeled or made for microwave use, and follow the manual for plastics, eggs, sealed containers and specialty heating products.
  4. Cover food loosely when appropriate and arrange it evenly, placing denser pieces toward the outside.
  5. Use a sensor program when it suits the food; otherwise set time and power manually using the model’s controls.
  6. For dense or uneven foods, stir or rearrange midway through cooking, then allow standing time.
  7. Check the center for doneness; use a food thermometer when safe cooking depends on reaching a temperature.

Stop use if the door or cavity is damaged

Do not operate the microwave empty unless its manufacturer specifically permits it. Never use it if the door, hinges, latch or seals are damaged; do not tamper with door interlocks or remove the outer casing. The FDA says compliant microwave ovens are subject to a federal leakage limit of 5 mW/cm² at approximately two inches and must have two independent door interlock systems. Its microwave safety guidance advises discontinuing use if the door or seals are damaged.

Liquids can become superheated and boil violently when disturbed after heating. Stir before and during heating where appropriate, handle carefully and allow standing time. Panasonic’s NN-SN686 manual warns against operating that oven empty, using metal containers and disturbing superheated liquids immediately after heating. If a fire starts inside, keep the door closed, turn the appliance off and disconnect power if safe to do so.

For routine cleaning, remove and wash the turntable and support ring as the manual allows. Wipe spills and grease from the cavity with a soft cloth and mild detergent, then dry; keep door seals and the closing area clean. Do not scrape or use cleaning methods prohibited by the manual. Stop using the unit if the interior coating is chipped, peeling or burned, or if arcing continues after removing unsuitable cookware and residue.

Troubleshoot common problems without opening the casing

The oven runs but does not heat

Check that the selected program and timer are appropriate, the door closes and latches fully, and the outlet is working. If the problem persists, stop using the unit and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service professional. GE classifies “runs but does not heat” as a troubleshooting or service issue; its guidance is available on the GE troubleshooting page. Do not attempt to replace high-voltage components or remove the casing.

Sparks or arcing appear inside

Stop the cycle. Check for metal or foil touching the cavity, unsuitable cookware, food residue, damage to the interior coating or a damaged waveguide cover. If sparking continues, particularly if the cavity is chipped, peeling or burned, discontinue use and arrange service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Food is hot outside but cold in the middle

Try a lower power setting for longer, arrange food in a ring, cover it loosely, stir or rearrange midway and let it stand. For safety-critical cooking, check the center with a food thermometer.

A sensor program ends too soon or runs too long

Sensor results depend on food quantity, moisture, steam, container size and material, covering and placement. For a small portion, dry food or irregular shape, use manual time and power instead.

Make the final choice by use case

  • For a simple model around 1,000W: Consider the Toshiba EM131A5C-BS for its stated 1.2-cu.-ft. capacity, sensor options, mute mode and removable turntable. Verify the output-wattage terminology, fit and current retailer price before purchasing.
  • For more low-power control: Consider the Panasonic NN-SN686S/NN-SN686SR if inverter operation and frequent defrosting matter more than matching exactly 1,000W. It is a 1,200W alternative.
  • For several cooking functions: Consider the Breville Combi Wave only if convection, air frying or grilling will get regular use. Bon Appétit’s June 12, 2026 coverage showed an approximately $500 market signal through Amazon and Breville listings; that is a dated indication, not a guaranteed current price.
  • For a compact space: Select by measured exterior footprint, door clearance and turntable size rather than choosing wattage first.

Do not treat GE JES1145SHSS as an unquestionably current recommendation: GE’s support page lists manufacture from December 2014 through September 2024. Remaining inventory, warranty status and seller authorization would need to be confirmed before purchase.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Confirm whether the advertised wattage is cooking output or electrical input.
  • Measure counter space, door swing, ventilation clearance and outlet access.
  • Check turntable diameter, interior height and fit for your regular dishes.
  • Decide whether you need sensors, inverter control, mute mode or child lock.
  • Read the model manual for electrical, cookware, installation and safety requirements.
  • Check current availability, retailer price, warranty and return terms before ordering.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
