The projector behind the “2,500-lumen 4K projector” headline is BenQ’s W2720i. It combines a 4LED light source, 4K UHD output, AI Cinema Mode, factory color calibration, automatic vertical keystone correction, built-in Android TV hardware, and HDMI eARC.
Those features can make a first home-cinema installation less intimidating—but they do not make projection as simple as switching on a television. Room lighting, screen size, placement, sound, and the projector’s pixel-shifted approach to 4K still matter.

Why it may be easier for a first-time projector owner
AI Cinema Mode and factory calibration
BenQ says AI Cinema Mode can optimize picture characteristics according to content and ambient-light conditions. The projector also comes with an individual factory calibration report, with BenQ claiming Delta E below 3, 98% Rec.709 coverage, and 90% DCI-P3 coverage.
For a beginner, that means less pressure to learn professional calibration immediately. Start with Cinema, Filmmaker Mode, or an appropriate HDR mode, then compare AI Cinema with the manually selected option. AI is a convenience feature, not a guarantee of objectively better image quality: it cannot fix a washed-out screen, excessive daylight, poor geometry, or an unsuitable source setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAutomatic geometry correction
Automatic vertical keystone correction can square an image when the projector is tilted vertically. Manual horizontal and vertical keystone correction are also listed, along with screen-fit and corner-adjustment tools.
These features are useful when a temporary setup is unavoidable, but digital keystone correction reshapes the image and can reduce effective sharpness or introduce scaling artifacts. The best result still comes from placing the projector level and as close as possible to the screen’s central axis. Use the projector’s limited lens shift before relying heavily on keystone.
Zoom and modest lens shift
The W2720i has a 1.0–1.3 throw ratio, a 1.3× zoom lens, and vertical lens shift of approximately ±5%. BenQ says it can create a 120-inch image from roughly 2.7 metres, or 8.9 feet, depending on the exact screen dimensions and placement.
The zoom gives a little flexibility in a living room, but ±5% vertical lens shift is modest compared with more installation-focused projectors offering broad motorized lens movement and lens memory. Measure before drilling or mounting; use BenQ’s current specifications and manual to confirm the exact throw distance for your screen.

Built-in streaming hardware
The included BenQ QS02 Android TV dongle reduces the need for a separate streaming box. BenQ lists services and features including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube, Google Play applications, Chromecast-related functionality, and Google Assistant.
Streaming support remains dependent on region, certification, account requirements, app updates, and platform changes. If an app is missing or unreliable, a separate certified streaming player is the practical fallback. Built-in streaming makes the system tidier; it does not remove the need for Wi-Fi, logins, updates, and occasional troubleshooting.
External audio through eARC
The projector includes two 5-watt speakers, which are convenient for casual viewing. They are unlikely to deliver sound on the same scale as a 100- or 120-inch image. HDMI eARC, Dolby Atmos pass-through, and S/PDIF support allow connection to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver.
The important 4K qualification: it uses XPR pixel shifting
4K UHD does not mean native 3,840×2,160 imaging here. The W2720i uses a single-chip DLP system with XPR pixel-shifting technology. BenQ lists 3,840×2,160 as its 4K UHD output, while the supplied manual identifies 1,920×1,080 operation without XPR.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Pixel shifting rapidly positions projected pixels to create a higher-resolution image than the underlying 1080p imaging chip produces in a single exposure. The result can look highly detailed, especially with a good 4K source and suitable viewing distance, but it should be described accurately as 4K UHD pixel-shifted or XPR projection, not native 4K.
For most first-time buyers, the more useful questions are whether the image is sharp enough at the intended screen size, how well the projector handles motion and HDR, and whether the viewing distance makes the distinction visible. Buyers specifically seeking a native 3,840×2,160 chip should look elsewhere.
Is 2,500 ANSI lumens enough for a living room?
Potentially—but brightness is not a promise of television-like performance in every room. ANSI lumens are a standardized brightness measurement, and 2,500 ANSI lumens gives the W2720i useful headroom for a living room or multipurpose space with some controlled lighting.

Ambient light still raises black levels and reduces perceived contrast. Direct daylight on the screen can make dark scenes look gray and HDR less convincing, even when bright highlights remain visible. White or light-colored walls can work for experimentation, but a proper projection screen generally offers better color neutrality, uniformity, and light control.
A smaller image in a dimmer, better-controlled room may look more cinematic than a huge image in a bright room. Close blinds or curtains, reduce direct light on the screen, and account for reflective walls and ceilings before assuming that a higher brightness rating will solve the problem.
Key image and gaming specifications
- Brightness: 2,500 ANSI lumens.
- Light source: 4LED.
- Color claims: 98% Rec.709 and 90% DCI-P3 coverage.
- HDR: HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG.
- Picture modes: AI Cinema, HDR AI Cinema, Filmmaker Mode, HDR Filmmaker Mode, Cinema, HDR Cinema, HDR10+, HLG, ISF Day, ISF Night, and User.
- Advertised contrast: 2,000,000:1 FOFO with light-source dimming.
The contrast number should be treated cautiously. Manufacturer FOFO figures are not directly equivalent to independently measured on/off or ANSI contrast, so it should not be used alone to predict black-level performance.
Gaming performance
BenQ lists input lag of 17.9 ms at 4K/60Hz and 1080p/60Hz, 12.8 ms at 1080p/120Hz, and 6.5 ms at 1080p/240Hz. That makes the W2720i potentially suitable for casual gaming and many console setups.
Its HDMI inputs support 4K/60Hz. One HDMI connection accepts a 4K/120Hz signal but downscales it to 1080p/120Hz. That is not the same as full-resolution 4K/120Hz output. Competitive players who prioritize the lowest latency and fastest response may still prefer a gaming monitor or television.
A practical beginner setup sequence
- Choose the image size first. Do not automatically choose the largest possible picture. Balance screen size against brightness, viewing distance, and room lighting.
- Measure the throw distance. Use the 1.0–1.3 throw-ratio range as a starting point. For a 120-inch image, BenQ gives an approximate 2.7-metre distance, but confirm the calculation for the exact screen.
- Place the projector square to the screen. Keep it level and centered where possible. Use physical alignment and lens shift before digital keystone correction.
- Select a starting picture mode. Try Cinema or Filmmaker Mode for movies, then compare AI Cinema or HDR modes with your actual content.
- Configure Android TV. Install the QS02 dongle in its internal HDMI connection, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in, and update apps. Keep an external streaming device in mind if a service is unavailable.
- Configure sound. Use the built-in speakers for convenience. For a cinema-style setup, connect a compatible soundbar or receiver through HDMI eARC and test the intended audio format.
- Control the room. Close curtains, reduce reflections, and avoid placing strong lights near the screen.
Common problems and fixes
- Trapezoidal image: Reposition and level the projector, reset keystone, and apply only modest digital correction.
- Image too large or too small: Adjust projector distance or use the 1.3× zoom rather than excessive digital scaling.
- HDR looks dim or gray: Try another HDR picture mode, check the source’s HDR output, and reduce room lighting.
- Streaming app missing: Update the Android TV environment, check regional availability, or connect a separate certified player.
- No sound from a soundbar: Confirm the correct HDMI eARC ports and settings; test PCM as a fallback.
- Gaming feels slow: Verify the console’s resolution, refresh rate, and picture mode. Use 1080p/120Hz or 1080p/240Hz when latency matters more than resolution.
Who should consider the W2720i?
The W2720i is a sensible candidate for a first projector if you want a large movie image, value accurate out-of-box color, have some control over room lighting, and do not want to assemble a separate streaming system immediately. It is also a reasonable option for casual gamers who want 4K input and lower-latency 1080p high-refresh modes.
It is a poor match if you need an ultra-short-throw projector, a portable design, broad lens shift, native 4K, the lowest possible gaming latency, or a fully equipped dedicated theater with motorized lens control and lens memory. It is also unsuitable for anyone expecting AI processing to replace careful placement, screen selection, sound planning, or blackout treatment.

Alternatives worth comparing
BenQ W4100i
The W4100i is the step-up comparison within BenQ’s home-cinema range. BenQ positions it for medium-size rooms and typical screens up to 120 inches. It is the more relevant choice for a permanent installation or larger room, rather than a direct low-cost alternative for a beginner.
BenQ W5800
The W5800 targets larger, more dedicated home theaters. BenQ’s comparison lists greater brightness and substantially more lens-shift capability than the W2720i. That flexibility can justify the extra cost and installation complexity in a serious theater, but it is likely excessive for casual living-room use.
