For fast sanding of rough boards and glued-up panels, WOOD magazine’s 2022 test named five standouts: Metabo HPT SB8V2 and Makita 9903 tied for best overall; RIDGID R86065B was its cordless pick; Makita 9403 removed material most aggressively; and SKIL 7510-01 offered the best value. The rankings reflect a nine-model test reported in an article updated August 17, 2022—not a current independent comparison or a guide to today’s prices.
How the five picks compare

| Metabo HPT SB8V2 | Best overall (tie) | 3 × 21 in. | Balanced aggressiveness and control; the test reported effective dust collection. |

| RIDGID R86065B | Best cordless | 3 × 18 in. | Cordless access for jobs where a cord is inconvenient; reported runtime was 20–30 minutes with a 4.0 Ah battery. |
| Makita 9403 | Most aggressive | 4 × 24 in. (100 × 610 mm) | Fastest material removal in the test, and the heaviest at 12.5 lb. |

These are dated test observations, not a current head-to-head ranking. WOOD magazine’s August 17, 2022 update describes its nine-model test; product specifications below are supported by the linked manufacturer documentation where available.
Which sander suits the work?
Metabo HPT SB8V2: a balanced general-purpose choice
WOOD magazine’s best-overall tie reflects a balance of stock removal and control. The test reported that its dust bag worked well and that connecting a shop vacuum improved collection. Metabo HPT confirms a 3 × 21 in. belt, variable speed, 9.5 lb weight, and included dust bag on its SB8V2 product page.
Makita 9903: tracking and belt changes
The 9903 tied the SB8V2 for best overall in the 2022 test. WOOD reported similar aggressiveness and control, stronger dust collection, and the test’s best tracking and easiest belt changes. Its belt is listed as 3 × 21 in. Those are the magazine’s findings from that test, rather than a current comparative result.

#1 Best Overall
- 7-amp motor rotates the belt at over 13 feet per second
- Compact design weighs in at a mere six pounds to limit the fatigue of the user
- Includes a detachable dust bag to minimize clean-up
- Lock-in safety feature allows for continuous sanding without requiring a constant grip on the trigger
- Backed by a two-year warranty and a nationwide network of skilled technicians
RIDGID R86065B: cordless access, with a runtime tradeoff
Choose this 18V sander when working away from a convenient outlet matters more than uninterrupted run time. WOOD magazine reported 20–30 minutes per charge using a 4.0 Ah battery in its test. RIDGID’s product page identifies it as a 3 × 18 in. model and states that the battery is not included. The magazine’s $139 figure is from 2022 and should not be read as a current price.
Makita 9403: fast, broad removal
In WOOD magazine’s test, the 9403 was the most aggressive sander and removed material fastest, but at 12.5 lb it was also the heaviest of the five. Its larger 4 × 24 in. belt can cover a broader area; that size and its intended use for large-surface sanding are specified in the Makita 9403 manual. The added weight and aggressive removal are practical tradeoffs: a powerful, heavy tool may be harder for some users to control, especially when the task calls for restraint.
Rank #2
- Two-in-one sanding machine includes both a 4-by-36 inch belt and a 6-by-6 inch disc
- Belt tilts anywhere from 0 to 90 degrees
- Sturdy cast iron base prevents any heavy vibrations
- 4.3 Amp motor provides up to 3600 RPM
- Tension release lever provides for simple changes between sandpaper grits
SKIL 7510-01: lighter and value-focused
WOOD magazine named the 7510-01 its best-value pick, reporting near-comparable removal speed to the overall winners while retaining control. The tool weighed 6 lb in the test. SKIL’s sander index identifies it as a 3 × 18 in., 6.0 amp belt sander.
What to weigh before choosing
- Removal speed versus control: A more aggressive sander can make quick work of rough stock, but demands care to avoid removing more material than intended.
- Belt size and working area: Wider or longer belts cover more surface per pass; check the exact size before buying replacement belts.
- Weight: The test’s range runs from 6 lb for the SKIL to 12.5 lb for the Makita 9403. Weight can affect comfort and handling, especially during longer sessions.
- Dust collection: Dust bags and vacuum connections can help manage debris, but collection performance differs by model and does not eliminate airborne dust.
- Power source: Cordless operation helps where a cord gets in the way. The R86065B’s reported 20–30-minute runtime used a 4.0 Ah battery in WOOD magazine’s test; the battery is sold separately according to RIDGID.
Match replacement belts and manage dust safely
Buy belts by the exact width and loop length specified for the sander, not just by a general label such as “belt sander belt.” The documented sizes include 3 × 21 in. for the Metabo HPT SB8V2, 3 × 18 in. for the RIDGID R86065B, and 100 × 610 mm for the Makita 9403. Confirm dimensions for the other models against their manuals or product documentation before ordering.
