Belkin’s Wemo shutdown has already happened. On January 31, 2026, Belkin discontinued the Wemo cloud services and app support used by most older Wemo products. Affected devices lost official app control, remote access, Alexa and Google Assistant integration, technical support, and future updates.
That does not mean every Wemo device is useless. A product may still work as a manual switch or plug, some devices configured with Apple Home before the deadline may continue operating locally, and Belkin identifies four Thread-based products as unaffected. The result depends on the exact model number and how it was configured before the shutdown.

What the Wemo shutdown means
Belkin’s official support notice concerns Wemo cloud services and support for affected products, not the physical hardware itself. For most affected Wi-Fi devices, the following functions are no longer available:

A physical plug, switch, appliance controller, or light switch may still operate manually. Some products may also remain controllable through a previously configured local platform, but Belkin no longer provides an official cloud-based control path for affected devices.

Check your model number first
Do not identify a device by its product name alone. “Wemo Mini Smart Plug,” for example, covers multiple model numbers with different outcomes. Look for the model number on the product label, packaging, original order record, or Wemo documentation, then compare it with Belkin’s affected-product and exception lists.

Belkin’s complete table contains 27 affected model entries, including variants whose continued use depended on earlier HomeKit setup. The official table should take priority over a product-family description or retailer listing.

Which Wemo devices may still work?
Previously configured Apple Home devices
Belkin says the following HomeKit-compatible products may continue functioning locally if they were configured with Apple HomeKit before January 31, 2026:

“HomeKit-compatible” does not mean “available for a new setup.” Belkin says new setup or reconfiguration through the Wemo app or HomeKit is no longer possible after the shutdown. A device that was already paired may continue working, while an identical device that was never paired may not be recoverable through the official setup process.
If a Wemo device is working in Apple Home, do not casually remove it, change its configuration, or perform a factory reset. Resetting may erase the local pairing and leave you unable to add the device again.

Thread is not a guarantee that a product will work without any equipment. You still need a compatible smart-home controller and, depending on the ecosystem, a Thread border router. Requirements vary between Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and SmartThings.
What can you do with an affected Wemo device?
Keep using it manually
A manual switch or plug may remain perfectly usable for basic on-and-off operation. This can be reasonable for a low-risk lamp or appliance where app control and automation are not important.

Try a local home-automation integration
Home Assistant lists a Belkin WeMo integration, so technically confident users may be able to control some models locally. This is not a Belkin-supported rescue and compatibility varies by model. It may require an always-on computer or home-automation appliance, networking knowledge, and ongoing maintenance. It also does not restore Belkin firmware updates, official support, or cloud features.
Do not rely on an unsupported setup for a safety-critical appliance, heating device, security function, or anything that must work consistently when you are away from home.
Request a warranty refund
Belkin says a product that was still under warranty on or after January 31, 2026 may be eligible for a refund. Eligibility is not automatic and is reviewed individually.

Use Belkin’s Wemo end-of-support refund form and prepare:
- Proof of purchase or an order-history record
- The product model number
- The serial number
- Purchase date and price
- Any Belkin shutdown notification
- Photos of the device and its condition if requested
Do not assume an out-of-warranty device qualifies or that every customer receives a full refund.
Replace or recycle it
If the device was never configured with HomeKit, depends on the discontinued Wemo app, or is unreliable, replacement may be more practical than troubleshooting. Belkin recommends authorized electronic-waste recycling for devices that are no longer usable and are not eligible for another solution.

Choosing a replacement
Choose based on the technology and support model, not only the brand name:
- Matter: A good choice for households using Apple, Google, Amazon, or Samsung platforms. Matter supports cross-platform control, although a compatible controller is still required. TP-Link describes its Matter products and controller requirements at its Matter overview.
- Apple Home and Thread: Suitable for Apple households that already have a compatible HomePod or Apple TV. Thread can reduce dependence on Wi-Fi, but the exact device and controller requirements matter.
- TP-Link Tapo or Kasa: These product lines include plugs and switches, and Home Assistant documents support for many TP-Link categories. Check the exact model for Matter, energy monitoring, local control, and Home Assistant features.
- Home Assistant: Best for technically confident users who want broad local automation. It is a poor fit if you want a simple, maintenance-free phone app.
For a plug, verify the outlet type, indoor or outdoor rating, load rating, energy monitoring, and preferred voice platform. For a hardwired switch, verify neutral-wire requirements, single-pole or multi-way compatibility, load rating, and electrical-box space. A replacement wall switch is not always a drop-in replacement; use a qualified electrician when the wiring or circuit is uncertain.
A practical decision checklist
- Find the exact Wemo model number.
- Compare it with Belkin’s affected and exception lists.
- If it is already working in Apple Home, avoid removing or resetting it.
- If it was under warranty on or after January 31, 2026, submit the refund request with purchase proof.
- Decide whether manual operation is sufficient.
- For advanced users, investigate Home Assistant compatibility for the exact model.
- Replace devices that are unreliable, safety-critical, or dependent on unavailable setup services.
- Recycle unusable electronics through an authorized e-waste facility.
The broader smart-home lesson
The Wemo shutdown demonstrates the risk of cloud-dependent hardware: a device can remain physically functional while losing the software services that made it smart. When buying replacements, look for Matter support, local control, a documented integration, clear warranty terms, and a published support lifetime. Matter can improve interoperability, but it does not mean every feature is permanently independent of vendor accounts or cloud services.
