Belgian tile history

Belgian Tile History, Modern Porcelain Choices: A Guide to the Grand Place Collection

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two different stories behind a Belgium-inspired tile project. The Roberto Pozzo Collection records Belgium’s historic ceramic-tile industry, while National Tile’s Grand Place brochure presents a contemporary, stone-look structured porcelain collection. The evidence does not establish that Grand Place is Belgian-made, antique, or a reproduction. Use the museum collection for historical reference and the modern brochure for design and format decisions, then verify technical specifications before ordering.

Start with the distinction: history versus a modern product

A project described as evoking Belgian tile history should not blur archival objects with a current commercial tile line. The Roberto Pozzo Collection is a historical resource: more than 9,000 tiles collected by Roberto Pozzo and donated to the King Baudouin Foundation. It documents Belgian and international examples across different periods, formats and techniques. The Grand Place collection is modern product literature for structured, stone-look porcelain tiles. Its brochure lists designs and sizes, but it does not prove a Belgian manufacturing origin or a historical reproduction.

That distinction matters on a construction specification. Historic Belgian tiles are evidence of period design and production; a modern porcelain tile must be selected according to its stated application, finish, dimensions, performance data and availability. Calling a tile “sturdy” without a current technical rating can create an avoidable installation or warranty problem.

For a historically informed scheme, cite the museum and collection as inspiration, and describe Grand Place accurately as a contemporary porcelain option. Keep the two claims separate in client presentations, schedules and procurement records.

What the Roberto Pozzo Collection preserves

A collector’s reference built from flea-market finds

Roberto Pozzo began collecting tiles after encountering them at flea markets in the 1970s. The collection grew to more than 9,000 tiles and became a reference for Belgian ceramic tiles. It includes Art Nouveau, neo-style and Art Deco examples, as well as tiles from other countries. The range covers multiple origins, periods, formats and techniques, so it is not a single-style Belgian pattern library.

The collection overview is available from the Roberto Pozzo Collection and King Baudouin Foundation. Its companion account, “An exceptional tile collection”, explains the collection’s scope and historical importance.

How it entered the museum

The King Baudouin Foundation received Pozzo’s donation on October 10, 2016. The Gilliot & Roelants Tile Museum says the collection was transferred to the museum on November 23, 2016. The museum describes more than 9,000 objects and says just over 3,000—nearly one third—were made at the Gilliot & Cie factory.

The museum’s account also records the physical scale of the holding at around four tonnes. That figure helps explain why this is an institutional collection rather than a typical batch of reclaimed tiles for a small renovation.

Belgium’s industrial tile context

A 19th- and early-20th-century manufacturing boom

The official collection account describes a major period of Belgian industrial tile manufacture from 1840 to 1940. It identifies about 30 Belgian tile factories during the 19th and 20th centuries and says Belgian products were exported to Latin America and Asia. Hemiksem, near Antwerp, is described as the main production centre.

These sources discuss ceramic tiles and industrial ceramic production. They do not establish that every historic Belgian tile was porcelain. In a specification, use “historic Belgian ceramic tile” for the archival material unless a particular object has a documented porcelain composition.

Gilliot & Cie in Hemiksem

The collection overview reports that Gilliot & Cie could produce about 250,000 tiles per day before 1914. This is a historical capacity figure reported by the collection, not a present-day production statistic. The museum’s statement that more than 3,000 Pozzo objects came from Gilliot & Cie makes the factory especially relevant when studying Hemiksem output, but it does not mean every Belgian historical pattern originated there.

What the Grand Place brochure actually documents

Formats and named designs

National Tile’s Grand Place brochure describes a modular, stone-look, structured porcelain tile collection. It lists designs including Bruxelles and Mons, with formats of 20×20, 20×40, 40×40 and 40×60.

The names may suit a Belgium-themed design brief, but a place name is not proof of manufacture, provenance or a historical pattern match. The brochure is product evidence only. The supplied material does not establish the collection’s manufacturing location, durability rating, slip classification, current stock, retail availability or relationship to the historic Belgian tile trade.

Why “porcelain” should be used precisely

“Porcelain tile” identifies the modern product category described by the brochure. It should not be used as a synonym for the entire historic Belgian industry. If your project combines new and reclaimed material, label the schedule by source and material—such as “new structured porcelain, Grand Place, design Bruxelles” and “reclaimed historic ceramic, maker and provenance to be confirmed.”

Historic and modern options compared

Decision point Roberto Pozzo Collection and historic tiles Grand Place modern porcelain
Purpose Historical reference and study of Belgian and international ceramic tiles Contemporary floor or wall design option described in a product brochure
Period Examples include 19th- and early-20th-century material; collection also spans other periods Modern; brochure publication date and manufacturing date are not stated here
Material wording Ceramic tiles; individual compositions vary and are not universally identified as porcelain Structured stone-look porcelain tile
Documented designs or styles Art Nouveau, neo-style, Art Deco and many other styles and techniques Bruxelles and Mons designs are listed
Formats Multiple formats are represented; a project-specific object’s dimensions must be measured 20×20, 20×40, 40×40 and 40×60, as listed in the brochure
Performance data Not a current product specification; condition and suitability vary by object Durability, slip, absorption and use ratings are not established by the supplied brochure evidence
Availability Museum collection; reclaimed-market inventory varies Current stock, retail channels and lead times are not established

How to use the history without making an unsupported claim

1. Define the role of the tile

Decide whether the tile is a working surface, a wall finish, a decorative insert or a historical exhibit. A floor specification needs current performance information; a display or splashback may instead prioritise pattern, colour and provenance. Record the intended room and exposure before selecting a product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Build a visual brief from documented examples

Use the Pozzo material to identify the qualities you want to echo—such as Art Nouveau line work, neo-style geometry or Art Deco composition. Treat those as design references, not proof that a new tile reproduces a particular Belgian factory pattern. Keep photographs, object numbers and measurements with the brief when they are available.

3. Separate the schedule entries

Give historic and modern tiles different schedule lines. For reclaimed pieces, record maker (if known), country, approximate period, dimensions, condition, pattern repeat and quantity. For a modern porcelain line, record the exact design name, nominal format, finish, intended floor or wall use and the manufacturer’s current technical sheet.

4. Request missing technical information

Before committing to Grand Place or any other modern porcelain, ask the supplier for the current product data that the brochure does not provide. Confirm the recommended application, slip or traction classification where relevant, wear or durability rating, water-absorption information, shade and calibre tolerances, cleaning guidance, installation method and warranty terms. Obtain the documents for the exact design and format, not just the collection name.

5. Check samples under project lighting

Order physical samples when possible. Structured surfaces and stone-look graphics can read differently in daylight, warm interior light and wet conditions. Compare the sample with grout colours, adjacent finishes and the proposed lighting. A sample also lets the installer assess edge profile, thickness and cutting behaviour before the full order.

Planning installation for a modern porcelain specification

The brochure’s four formats support modular planning, but a layout still needs to be drawn for the actual room. Set out the module around doors, drains, thresholds, corners and fixed cabinetry. Confirm whether the selected pattern is directional and whether the supplier requires a particular joint width or orientation. Do not infer these details from the product name; use the current installation instructions.

  1. Survey the substrate. Check that the floor or wall is sound, clean, sufficiently flat and suitable for the selected tile system. Record defects and moisture conditions before ordering.
  2. Confirm quantities. Measure the net area, add a project-appropriate allowance for cuts and future repairs, and verify that all cartons share the required shade and calibre. The correct allowance depends on room geometry and the laying pattern.
  3. Approve a dry layout. Lay out representative pieces, including borders, corners and transitions. Obtain client approval before adhesive is spread.
  4. Use the specified setting materials. Follow the tile manufacturer’s and adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for substrate preparation, coverage, joint treatment and curing. Local building requirements and the installer’s method statement still apply.
  5. Document the installation. Keep cartons, batch information, approved samples, photographs and maintenance instructions with the handover file. This record is valuable if a replacement tile is needed later.

These steps are planning controls, not a substitute for the exact Grand Place technical documentation. The supplied brochure does not establish a particular adhesive, joint width, sealing requirement or cleaning chemical, so those choices should remain tied to the current manufacturer and project conditions.

When reclaimed or antique tiles are the better choice

Use reclaimed material when provenance, patina and an authentic period surface matter more than uniformity. Amfora’s collection page describes antique ceramic floor and wall tiles from the 19th and early 20th centuries and discusses reclaimed tiles for restoration and renovation. It does not establish current inventory, prices, shipping terms or a referral programme.

Inspect reclaimed lots individually. Ask for the maker and provenance, exact dimensions, thickness, number of complete pieces, chipped or cracked percentages, cleaning history and photographs of the full quantity. Pattern-match a representative group before designing a large field. Historic tiles may vary in size and wear, so a layout that works for a new modular product may not work for reclaimed pieces.

Restoration versus new construction

For a conservation project, retain as much original material as practical and document replacements. For a new-build interpretation, it is clearer to state that the design is “inspired by Belgian ceramic-tile history” rather than implying that a modern product is an antique reproduction. That wording protects the historical record and gives the client an honest basis for choosing between visual consistency and authentic age.

Visiting the Gilliot & Roelants Tile Museum

The Gilliot & Roelants Tile Museum in Hemiksem holds the Pozzo Collection. The museum’s museum information page states that admission is free and lists seasonal hours: from July through September, Wednesday to Sunday, 14:00–17:00; from October, the first Sunday of the month, 14:00–17:00. Schedules can change, so verify the hours before travelling.

A visit can help a design team study scale, relief, colour relationships and historic variation directly. Contact the museum in advance if your project requires access to a particular object, professional photography or detailed provenance; the public timetable alone does not promise access to every item.

A defensible specification for a Belgium-inspired project

A clear specification might identify the historical reference separately from the installed product: “Design intent informed by Belgian ceramic tiles documented in the Roberto Pozzo Collection; new surface tile to be selected from the Grand Place structured stone-look porcelain range, subject to current technical approval.” Add the exact design, format, finish, approved sample and technical-sheet revision once confirmed.

This approach gives the project both cultural accuracy and construction control. The Pozzo Collection supplies a documented connection to Belgium’s tile history, including the Hemiksem industry and its international reach. Grand Place supplies a modern porcelain design vocabulary with listed Bruxelles and Mons formats. Neither source, on its own, proves that the modern product is Belgian-made or that it meets a particular performance class.
