Bearing Wall Footing Sizes: How to Choose Width, Depth, and Reinforcement

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A bearing-wall footing is the continuous foundation under a load-bearing wall. Its job is to spread the wall and the building loads over enough soil area that the ground can safely support them without excessive settlement. There is no single “standard” width: the correct footing depends on allowable soil bearing pressure, wall and tributary floor loads, stories, basement or crawl-space layout, building width, frost and seismic conditions, and the footing system allowed by your locally adopted code.

For a simple light-frame case that fits the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) prescriptive tables, a one-story slab-on-grade example at 20 psf roof live load or 25 psf ground snow load is listed as 12 inches wide by 6 inches thick across the table’s stated soil values. A two-story house with a basement under the same loading example ranges from 19 by 6 inches at 1,500 psf allowable soil pressure to 12 by 6 inches at 2,500 psf and higher. Those are code-table entries under specific assumptions, not a universal recommendation for every project.

What a bearing-wall footing does

A wall transfers gravity loads downward through studs or masonry, plates, beams, joists, and the foundation. The footing is the final load-spreading element before the load reaches the soil. Because a wall is continuous, its footing is normally continuous as well, rather than a series of isolated pads.

The 2024 IRC, Section R403.1, requires an approved support system capable of accommodating the building loads and transmitting them to soil within the soil’s limitations. The code describes support on undisturbed natural soil or properly engineered fill. A footing that looks substantial can still fail if it bears on loose fill, organic material, expansive soil, saturated soil, or soil with a lower allowable pressure than the design assumed.

Footing width controls the soil contact area. Footing thickness, wall eccentricity, reinforcement, concrete strength, steps, joints, and connection to the stem wall control structural behavior. These are related decisions, but increasing width alone does not correct every foundation problem.

The information that controls footing size

Allowable soil bearing pressure

Soil bearing pressure is commonly expressed in pounds per square foot (psf). A higher allowable value lets a given wall load be spread over a smaller area; a lower value requires a wider footing. The allowable value is a design limit, not the soil’s ultimate failure pressure, and it must reflect the actual site and code assumptions.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Residential Structural Design Guide, Second Edition (2015) expresses the basic relationship for a continuous footing as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Required footing width = wall load per linear foot ÷ allowable soil bearing pressure

Use consistent units. If the wall load is 4,000 pounds per linear foot (plf) and the allowable pressure is 2,000 psf, the arithmetic gives 2 feet, or 24 inches, of required soil-contact width before checking minimum dimensions, eccentricity, overturning, settlement, reinforcement, frost, and other code requirements. The example illustrates the calculation; it is not a design for a particular house.

Wall and tributary building loads

“Bearing wall” identifies the wall’s role, not its load. A wall supporting one roof half may carry far less than a central wall supporting joists from both sides, several floors, and a roof beam. The design load per linear foot can include wall self-weight, floor and roof dead loads, floor live load, roof live or snow load, concentrated beam reactions, and construction-specific loads.

Openings, point loads, offset walls, transfer beams, and discontinuous framing can create local reactions that a uniform footing calculation misses. A foundation plan should identify where beams, posts, chimneys, stair openings, and framed offsets deliver concentrated loads.

Stories and foundation configuration

Story count increases the tributary load carried by a lower wall. The same wall line may need different footing dimensions under a one-story slab, a one-story crawl space, a two-story crawl space, or a basement. A basement wall also introduces lateral earth pressure and may require a footing and wall arrangement different from an interior bearing wall.

Building width perpendicular to the wall

Prescriptive footing tables use building width because it changes the roof and floor area tributary to a wall. The reproduced IRC table is based on a 32-foot building width measured perpendicular to the footing. In that table, each 4-foot increase in width calls for a 2-inch increase in footing width and a 1-inch increase in footing depth; corresponding decreases may be allowed for smaller widths, subject to minimums. Do not extend that adjustment beyond the table’s permitted range without the adopted code or an engineer’s design.

Climate, frost, and seismic conditions

Footings generally must be placed below the locally required frost depth or otherwise protected from frost heave. Frost depth and frost-protected shallow foundation provisions vary by jurisdiction. Seismic Design Categories D0, D1, and D2 can trigger additional footing and stem-wall reinforcement and detailing. These geographic requirements are separate from the soil-bearing calculation, so a footing that satisfies one may still fail another.

What the 2024 IRC tables can—and cannot—tell you

The 2024 IRC provides prescriptive concrete-footing tables for defined light-frame conditions. The values distinguish story count, slab/crawl-space/basement configuration, soil-bearing value, and roof live or ground snow load. The table is useful when your project matches its assumptions and your jurisdiction has adopted that edition without amendments.

Illustrative table condition Listed footing result Qualification
One-story, slab-on-grade; 20 psf roof live load or 25 psf ground snow load 12 in. wide × 6 in. thick across the listed 1,500–4,000 psf soil values Applies only to the table’s light-frame assumptions and minimums
Two-story plus basement; same roof/snow example; 1,500 psf soil 19 in. wide × 6 in. thick Prescriptive table entry, not a general two-story recommendation
Two-story plus basement; same roof/snow example; 2,500 psf soil and above 12 in. wide × 6 in. thick Use the exact row and soil value in the adopted edition

The table’s baseline assumptions include a 32-foot building width, a 9-foot wall, an 8-foot basement wall, 15 psf roof and ceiling dead load, 10 psf floor dead load, 12 psf wall dead load, specified floor and roof live loads, a clear-span roof/ceiling assembly, and an interior bearing wall or beam at each floor. A project with a different wall height, heavy cladding, storage loads, roof geometry, spans, or concentrated reactions may not fit.

The ICC training material titled IRC Soils and Foundations reproduces 2021 IRC footing tables and seismic examples. It is useful for understanding the table structure, but the code edition adopted by your building department controls. The IRC permits interpolation between listed soil pressures where the table allows it; it does not permit extrapolating beyond the listed soil-bearing values.

How to size a footing when a prescriptive table does not fit

  1. Confirm the governing code. Ask the building department which IRC edition, local amendments, frost provisions, and seismic category apply.
  2. Establish soil parameters. Obtain the allowable bearing pressure and any requirements for fill, groundwater, expansive soil, slope stability, or settlement. If no reliable value exists, arrange a site evaluation or geotechnical investigation.
  3. Calculate line loads. Add dead, live, snow, wall, beam, and other reactions tributary to each wall line. Keep uniform wall load and concentrated reactions separate.
  4. Compute preliminary contact width. Divide total service load per linear foot by allowable soil pressure, then convert the result to inches.
  5. Check eccentricity and stability. Verify that the resultant remains within the intended footing area and that soil pressure stays within allowable limits. Exterior walls, offset walls, and basement conditions often need this check.
  6. Check minimum thickness and reinforcement. Apply code minimums, concrete and masonry requirements, construction-joint details, development and lap lengths, and any seismic provisions.
  7. Check constructability. Confirm excavation width, steps, cover to reinforcement, drainage, forms, access, and a continuous load path into the wall above.
  8. Document the design. Put footing width, thickness, elevations, concrete strength, reinforcement, steps, joints, and soil assumptions on the foundation drawings used for permitting and construction.

Soil investigation and field verification

A soil number copied from a generic table is not a substitute for site information. Soil can vary across a single lot, and a trench may expose loose fill even when the surface appears firm. The designer or inspector may require proof-rolling, test pits, borings, a geotechnical report, or an on-site bearing evaluation.

  • Excavate to undisturbed natural soil or the depth and preparation specified for engineered fill.
  • Remove topsoil, roots, organic layers, soft pockets, and uncontrolled fill from the bearing surface.
  • Keep the trench from collecting water; saturated or softened soil may not provide the assumed capacity.
  • Do not place concrete on frozen soil or allow an open excavation to degrade before inspection.
  • Tell the designer if the exposed soil differs from the report or permit assumptions.

Does a bearing-wall footing need rebar?

Sometimes, but there is no universal rebar schedule for every bearing wall. Reinforcement depends on the adopted code, footing geometry, wall material, concrete design, construction joints, differential settlement risk, seismic category, and the engineer’s details. In seismic Design Categories D0, D1, and D2, the IRC-based training material reproduces additional footing and stem-wall reinforcement requirements for specified configurations.

Use the bar size, number, spacing, cover, hooks, laps, dowels, and placement shown on the approved drawings. Generic “concrete rebar” selected at the job site does not make a footing compliant if it is misplaced, lacks required development, or conflicts with the design. Reinforcement must remain supported at the specified elevation and have the required concrete cover; it should not be laid directly on soil and pulled up during the pour.

Footing systems recognized by residential code

Cast-in-place concrete is common, but the IRC also recognizes approved alternatives. Each system has different material, drainage, detailing, inspection, and location requirements.

System Where it may fit What must be verified
Cast-in-place concrete strip footing Typical continuous support under concrete, masonry, or framed walls Width, thickness, concrete specification, reinforcement, joints, frost depth, and soil capacity
Fully grouted masonry footing Projects using qualifying masonry foundation construction Approved masonry design, grout, reinforcement, drainage, and local amendments
Crushed-stone footing Only where the code and approved design permit it Specified stone gradation, confinement, drainage, settlement control, and inspection
Wood foundation Locations and designs that meet the wood-foundation provisions Treated materials, soil contact, drainage, connections, and code limitations

Construction sequence for a continuous wall footing

  1. Set out the wall lines. Locate the footing from the foundation plan, including offsets, steps, corners, and beam or post reactions.
  2. Excavate to the designed bearing elevation. Keep the trench bottom level or form any designed steps; do not widen or deepen sections casually without revising the design.
  3. Prepare the bearing surface. Remove unsuitable material, compact approved fill as specified, and protect the excavation from water and freezing.
  4. Install forms and reinforcement. Maintain dimensions, laps, dowels, cover, and clearances shown on the drawings. Install sleeves or penetrations before the pour where permitted.
  5. Request required inspection. Many jurisdictions require footing and reinforcement inspection before concrete placement.
  6. Place and consolidate concrete. Avoid segregating the mix, keep reinforcement in position, and finish the top so the wall or stem-wall connection can be built accurately.
  7. Cure and protect. Follow the concrete specification for curing and cold- or hot-weather protection before loading the footing.
  8. Build the wall and waterproof or drain as designed. Basement and crawl-space systems require the specified drainage, damp-proofing or waterproofing, backfill, and connection details.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using a 12-inch footing for every wall

A 12-inch minimum appearing in one table row does not apply to every story count, soil value, roof load, or building width. Recalculate the wall line or verify that every table assumption matches.

Ignoring the center wall’s tributary area

An interior bearing wall may support framing from both sides. Recheck tributary widths and beam reactions rather than using an exterior-wall rule of thumb.

Building on unverified fill

Stop work and obtain direction when excavation exposes fill, debris, organics, or soft soil. The solution may be removal and replacement, engineered fill, a revised footing, or a different foundation system.

Assuming more concrete fixes poor soil

Extra thickness does not automatically increase allowable soil pressure or solve settlement. Soil improvement, deeper bearing, a wider designed footing, or engineered foundation work may be required.

Adding rebar without a detail

Random bars can have inadequate cover, laps, anchorage, or placement and can interfere with the wall connection. Use the approved reinforcement schedule and ask the designer about field changes.

Forgetting local amendments

The 2024 IRC is a reference edition, not proof of local adoption. Confirm current jurisdictional requirements before excavation, especially for frost, seismic detailing, expansive soil, and inspection stages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When professional design is the right choice

Consult a structural engineer, geotechnical professional, or both when the project is outside the prescriptive table assumptions; has poor, variable, expansive, filled, or sloping soil; carries unusual point loads; uses tall or heavily cladded walls; includes a basement or retaining condition; is in a high seismic category; or involves a large addition, underpinning, or foundation alteration. Professional design is also prudent when the building department requests calculations or when a footing must be repaired after settlement or cracking.

The practical decision is not simply “how many inches wide?” It is whether the footing has a documented load path, verified soil support, code-compliant geometry and reinforcement, and construction details that match the permitted design.
