Houston’s Bayou Greenways is a long-term public-private effort to turn bayou corridors into connected trails, parks, habitat and neighborhood links. The initiative began with a planned network and is now an expanding collection of completed segments, bridges, underpasses and restoration sites. It is not one uninterrupted trail: route conditions, construction schedules and bridge closures still vary by corridor.
Houston Parks Board describes the purpose plainly: “Houston Parks Board and its project partners are transforming our bayous into Greenways, connecting people to trails, parks and neighborhoods.” The figures below separate the original goals from later progress reports, because they describe different scopes and counting methods.

Bayou Greenways is Houston’s civic greenway program along the city’s major bayou corridors. Houston Parks Board (HPB) presents it as a $220 million public-private initiative that combines trail construction, park improvements, land and habitat work, crossings and neighborhood connections. The City of Houston describes the broader effort as a parks-and-trails network along nine major bayous.
The program builds on infrastructure that already existed before the initiative. HPB says public agencies and related entities had completed 77 miles of trail along Houston’s bayous before the current Bayou Greenways effort began. New work therefore extends and links an existing system rather than creating every mile from scratch.

For residents, the practical result is a set of hike-and-bike routes beside waterways, with access points, bridges, underpasses, landscaping and restored wetlands. A segment can be useful on its own while also serving a longer-term connection between neighborhoods, parks and other trails.
How the project’s mileage and acreage figures fit together
Three headline measurements are often mentioned together, but they are not interchangeable. The first two are original program goals; the third is a later HPB implementation report.

HPB’s reports do not explain how the later “more than 160 miles” total should be reconciled with the original 150-mile vision. The totals may use different definitions, such as counting amenities or extensions beyond the initial target, but that interpretation has not been confirmed by the reviewed sources. The safest reading is to attribute each figure to its source and avoid presenting them as one consistent measurement.
How Bayou Greenways was funded
The public commitment
Houston voters approved a $100 million commitment in 2012 for new trails and parks. That bond-supported investment supplied a public foundation for a larger capital program.
Private fundraising and the $220 million figure
HPB says it raised another $120 million for the initiative, including a $50 million lead gift from the Kinder Foundation in 2013. HPB’s current project overview uses those figures to describe a $220 million public-private partnership when combined with the voter-approved commitment.
Why another HPB page cites $125 million
An older HPB overview titled A Way Forward reports $125 million in additional partner funding and discusses Beyond the Bayous, a framework for extending greenspace and access beyond the core bayou corridors. That amount may reflect a different reporting date or scope from the $120 million fundraising figure. It should not be added to the $220 million total without a clarified accounting from HPB.

Which waterways and neighborhoods does it connect?
HPB’s project overview names these corridors and waterways:
- Brays Bayou
- Buffalo Bayou
- Greens Bayou
- Halls Bayou
- Hunting Bayou
- Sims Bayou
- White Oak Bayou
- West Fork of the San Jacinto River
The City uses the phrase “nine major bayous.” The reviewed project pages do not explain why the overview’s list contains eight named entries while the City describes nine corridors. Use the City’s nine-bayou wording when describing the official network scope, and treat the named list above as the waterways explicitly identified on HPB’s overview.
Connections are delivered in several forms: parallel trails beside a bayou, links between previously separate segments, road-crossing improvements, bridges and underpasses, and extensions toward reservoirs or other greenways. Consequently, two nearby trailheads may belong to the same long-term greenway plan without offering a continuous ride between them today.
What has been built or opened recently?
HPB’s FY2025 Annual Report provides concrete examples of the continuing build-out.
Brays Bayou: interconnected construction
Construction began in January 2025 on three interconnected Brays Bayou projects. HPB reports 4.4 miles of new or improved trail and seven pedestrian and bicycle underpasses from that work. The projects are designed to reduce the barrier created by major roads, where a trail may otherwise end at an intersection.
Rabbi Samuel Karff Memorial Bridge
The 634-foot Rabbi Samuel Karff Memorial Bridge opened in February 2025. HPB says it improves the connection across North and South Braeswood Boulevards, linking sections that previously required more complicated street crossings.

Spring Branch Trail
A 0.8-mile Spring Branch Trail segment from Gessner Road to Shadowdale Drive opened in May 2025. HPB says it links to the existing Emnora Trail. The segment is part of a longer-term 11-mile continuous-trail vision extending from Addicks Reservoir to White Oak Bayou Greenway; the opening of one segment does not mean the entire envisioned distance is complete.
Sharpstown Hike-and-Bike Trail
The first phase of the Sharpstown Hike-and-Bike Trail opened in June 2025, covering 1.8 miles between Sands Point Drive and Beechnut Street. HPB reports seven trail connections, intersection improvements, signage and landscaping as part of the phase.

Bayou Greenways also includes environmental construction and stewardship. HPB reports working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Restore America’s Estuaries to establish eight wetland sites in six locations along Sims, Greens and Hunting bayous. Its FY2025 report describes volunteer planting at River Drive and Erie Street on Sims Bayou. These projects add habitat and water-edge restoration to a program that is often understood only as trail building.
Are Houston bayou trails open and continuous?
Some segments are open while others may be under construction, temporarily closed or separated by an unfinished connection. The official project vision is not proof that every planned route is currently usable.
The MKT Trail Hogan Pedestrian Bridge warning
Houston Public Works recorded severe structural damage to the MKT Trail Hogan Pedestrian Bridge over White Oak Bayou. Its notice said rehabilitation was scheduled to begin September 22, 2025, with a target reopening at the end of December 2025, weather permitting. That target date is now past, and the notice does not establish that the bridge reopened.
Before planning a trip that depends on this crossing, check the current City or Houston Public Works trail map and the latest closure notice. Do not assume a bridge is open because an older project page lists it as part of the network.

How to plan a Bayou Greenways outing
- Choose a verified segment. Start with the current official trail map, identify the trailhead and confirm that the segment is listed as open.
- Check closures and construction. Look specifically for bridge, underpass, road-crossing and flood-related notices on the day of travel.
- Confirm the connection. A named greenway may include gaps. Check whether the intended route requires riding on a street, crossing an intersection or turning around at a temporary endpoint.
- Plan for shared use. These are hike-and-bike facilities. Keep speed controlled, yield appropriately and expect pedestrians, runners and other cyclists.
- Prepare for changing conditions. Carry water, a charged phone and a basic repair kit. A bicycle helmet is a sensible optional safety item for riders.
- Use daylight and visible access points. Identify entrances, road crossings and an alternate exit before starting, especially on an unfamiliar segment.
These steps matter because construction schedules and weather can change practical access faster than a long-range project overview can be updated.
What the expansion means for Houston’s infrastructure
Bayou Greenways is being delivered as a network of civil works rather than a single park project. A typical segment can require trail grading and paving, drainage coordination, right-of-way work, bridge or underpass construction, utility coordination, landscaping and long-term maintenance. The Brays projects illustrate how a mileage gain can also involve multiple crossings; the Spring Branch and Sharpstown openings show how short segments can complete local links before a longer corridor is finished.
The program’s stated access objective is to place 1.5 million Houstonians within 1.5 miles of a Bayou Greenways route. That is an HPB projection describing intended reach, not an independently verified current population measurement. Whether a resident can actually use the network depends on a safe entrance, a maintained path and an open crossing, not distance alone.
What remains to be realized?
A consistent mileage accounting
The original 150-mile vision, the 3,000-acre greenspace goal and the FY2024 report of more than 160 completed miles are all useful indicators, but they answer different questions. HPB has not provided, in the reviewed materials, a counting method that reconciles them. Readers comparing progress should keep planned mileage, completed trail-and-amenity mileage and greenspace acreage in separate columns.
More connectors and corridor continuity
HPB’s FY2024 report identified 50 miles of planned new greenways, while the FY2025 report documents additional openings and construction. The Spring Branch long-term connection and the Brays underpasses show the emphasis on stitching together isolated sections. Planned work can change as design, funding, permitting and site conditions evolve.
Maintenance and reliable access
A greenway’s value depends on upkeep after construction: pavement and bridge maintenance, vegetation management, signs, drainage performance and timely repair after storms or structural problems. The MKT bridge notice demonstrates why current closure information belongs alongside any description of the network’s size.
How to read Bayou Greenways progress reports
When a new announcement cites miles, ask four questions:
- Is the number a long-term vision, a newly opened segment or a cumulative completed total?
- Does it count only trail pavement, or trails together with other amenities?
- Which fiscal year, corridor and project phase does it cover?
- Is the route open for public use now, or is it under construction or awaiting a crossing?
Applying those checks prevents the common mistake of treating a planned connection as an open route or combining figures that were reported for different purposes.
