Tree roots usually enter sewer pipes through existing cracks, leaks, or loose joints—not by breaking through an intact pipe wall. If drains repeatedly slow down or back up, arrange a professional sewer-camera inspection to locate the problem. Clearing roots may restore flow, but lasting repair depends on addressing the pipe defect that let them in.
Why tree roots get into sewer pipes
Roots seek moisture and can grow toward water escaping from a damaged pipe. Fine roots may enter through a crack or a loose, non-watertight joint, then spread inside the pipe. The resulting mass can catch toilet paper, grease, and other debris, restricting flow and contributing to a backup.
Older clay and concrete sewer laterals with defective joints are especially vulnerable, according to Seattle Public Utilities and Traverse City. That is a relative risk, not a guarantee: not every older pipe has root intrusion, and newer pipes are not immune to defects.
Signs of root intrusion—and how to confirm it
Recurring slow drains, repeated blockages, or a sewer backup can indicate a problem in the lateral, the pipe connecting a property to the public sewer. These symptoms do not prove roots are the cause; other pipe defects or clogs can produce similar problems.

A professional sewer lateral camera inspection can show whether roots are present, where they are, and what condition the pipe is in. The camera findings help distinguish a cleaning need from an open joint, crack, displacement, or other structural defect. Livermore and Traverse City both direct residents toward television or video inspections for this purpose. A sewer inspection camera is the relevant diagnostic tool category, but these sources do not establish that a particular consumer model is suitable or a substitute for a qualified inspection.
What to do if an inspection finds roots
- Ask what the camera found. Get the root location and severity, pipe material and condition, and whether the inspection shows open or displaced joints, cracks, or other damage.
- Clarify whether the recommendation is temporary or structural. Root cutting or cleaning can reopen a restricted line, but it does not seal the defect that admitted the roots. Ask the contractor directly whether the proposed work removes roots only or also repairs the entry point.
- Compare repair approaches against the pipe condition. Replacement can address structural defects but may require disruptive excavation that affects landscaping. Lining rehabilitates an existing pipe and can reduce excavation, but roots must be removed first; the US Forest Service review describes lateral connections as part of the lining process. Neither approach is right for every line, so the camera evidence and a contractor’s assessment should guide the choice.
- Check who owns the affected section before authorizing work. Responsibility for private laterals and public mains varies by location. Contact the local wastewater utility if the defect may be beyond your connection or cleanout.
Seattle Public Utilities gives local follow-up guidance based on the severity of intrusion: it recommends reinspecting minor or moderate intrusion three to five years after the original inspection. For severe intrusion—defined there as obstruction of 50% or more of the pipe—it recommends inspection every one to two years and routine cleaning. These are Seattle recommendations, not a nationwide schedule.

How to reduce future risk when planting trees
- Locate the sewer lateral and other underground utilities before planting or digging.
- Choose tree locations with the species’ mature size, the site, and local utility guidance in mind. Livermore advises avoiding trees or large shrubs near sewer lines and consulting a local nursery or landscape professional about selection.
- Follow the local utility’s setback guidance rather than assuming one distance works everywhere. Seattle recommends planting at least five feet from sewer, water, and gas lines; that local recommendation is not a universal rule.
- If work near an established tree is being planned, coordinate the sewer repair with utility professionals and an arborist. Do not cut substantial tree roots without qualified arboricultural advice.
Will removing the tree stop roots in the sewer?
Removing a tree is not a reliable default fix for a root-filled sewer. Seattle Public Utilities says roots may grow up to two times the length of a tree’s height and advises that removing trees above or near side sewers is unlikely to solve a root problem. This is Seattle’s general guidance, not a universal maximum for every species or site. The Forest Service review also notes that roots can survive after aboveground removal, so tree removal does not guarantee that root problems will end.
Who is responsible for the sewer line?
Ownership rules depend on local policy and where the defect is. Seattle says property owners maintain and repair the side sewer, including roots up to and within its connection to the main; other utility districts may draw the boundary differently. Find the cleanout and lateral, then ask the local wastewater utility which party is responsible for the affected segment before arranging repairs.

What the available cost and blockage figures mean
A 2001 US Forest Service review by T.B. Randrup, E. Gregory McPherson, and L.R. Costello reports that root-removal costs may be one-sixth the cost of pipe replacement or renewal due to roots. That is an older comparative estimate, not a current quote or a dependable cost ratio for a particular property. The review also reports a figure of more than 50% of sewer blockages attributed to roots in prior literature. That is a historical reported estimate, not a current national rate. Neither figure should replace an inspection or local contractor estimates.
