The National Kitchen & Bath Association’s 2025 forecast points to bathrooms designed for everyday wellness: warm, natural finishes, spa-like routines, easier upkeep, adaptable layouts, layered lighting, accessible storage and smart features. These are directions professionals expected to gain ground—not a guarantee that every homeowner will choose them. And because NKBA released a newer 2026 report in November 2025, its 2025 forecast is best read as a snapshot of that year’s outlook, not the latest annual forecast.
What the 2025 forecast actually says
NKBA’s 2025 Bath Trends Report describes expected styles, colors, products, materials and finishes over a three-year horizon. The association says its 2024 survey drew responses from 500 North American industry professionals; 58% were designers, with the rest including showroom professionals, dealers, kitchen-and-bath remodelers, contractors and architects. That makes it a professional forecast, not a poll of all homeowners or a measure of what was ultimately installed.
Across the report’s themes, the common thread is a bathroom that feels restorative while remaining practical to live with. NKBA Global President and CEO Bill Darcy described the aim as spaces where people can “linger, rest and relax,” with spa-like features, intentional lighting, natural colors and elements that reduce upkeep.
Which bathroom ideas stood out for 2025?
Wellness and personal spa rituals
The forecast treats well-being as more than a luxury add-on: the bathroom can support daily routines that feel calming and personal. Think about how the room will be used—such as a quiet shower routine or a place to get ready without rushing—before choosing features. A spa-inspired idea is useful only if it fits the household’s habits, space and budget.

Warm, natural aesthetics
NKBA points toward warm colors and natural-looking materials and finishes. When comparing options, consider appearance alongside maintenance and durability: a surface that looks right in a sample may behave differently under frequent moisture, cleaning or daily wear. The report identifies a direction, not a universal material specification.
Lower-maintenance choices
Reducing upkeep is part of the forecast’s stress-reduction theme. For a renovation, assess how a finish must be cleaned, whether grout or seams add cleaning work, and whether the product’s care requirements suit the people who will maintain it. “Low maintenance” depends on the specific material, installation and use; the trend label alone does not establish performance.
Rank #2
Flexible layouts and useful storage
NKBA highlights flexible layouts and storage placed within reach. A practical plan starts with circulation and access: identify who uses the room, what must be reachable, and whether existing plumbing, walls or room dimensions constrain changes. Storage should support the routine rather than obstruct movement or make frequently used items difficult to access.
Layered lighting and smart features
The forecast includes both intentional, layered lighting and smart technology. Lighting should be considered by task as well as mood: getting ready, showering and moving through the room call for different needs. Smart controls can add convenience, but their value depends on compatibility, installation requirements and whether occupants want another connected feature to operate and maintain.

Use the forecast as a set of design prompts, then test each idea against the room and the people using it. NKBA’s public summary does not establish a single specification, ranked product list or best finish for every bathroom.
- Start with needs and access. List daily routines, storage needs and any mobility or reach considerations before selecting finishes or fixtures.
- Check the existing room. Confirm layout constraints, plumbing locations, clearances and installation requirements with the project team before treating a flexible-layout idea as feasible.
- Compare materials in context. Weigh appearance against cleaning demands, durability and suitability for a damp, frequently used room.
- Plan lighting and controls together. Map task and ambient lighting needs, then check that proposed controls and smart features work with the electrical plan and intended use.
- Choose features that earn their space. Prioritize the improvements that make the room easier or more pleasant to use; a trend is not a reason to add a feature that does not serve the household.
What homeowners’ renovation data adds
A separate 2025 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study offers homeowner context, but it is not the same survey as NKBA’s professional forecast. In a September 23, 2025 press release describing more than 1,700 respondents, Houzz reported that 68% of surveyed homeowners considered special needs during their bathroom projects. That figure reflects those surveyed homeowners’ projects; it does not mean 68% of all homeowners adopted a particular feature, nor does it turn the NKBA trend forecast into homeowner consensus.

How current is the 2025 forecast?
NKBA released its 2026 Bath Trends Report in November 2025. The 2025 report remains useful for understanding the directions professionals anticipated for that year, but readers looking for the newest annual outlook should distinguish it from the later 2026 report. Neither a forecast nor a homeowner survey guarantees what will suit a particular renovation.
