Base Power raised a $200 million Series B on April 9, 2025, in a round co-led by Addition, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Lightspeed Venture Partners and Valor Equity Partners. The Austin company combines residential backup batteries with retail electricity service, allowing it to operate a network of home batteries as a distributed grid resource.

The announcement is now historical rather than the company’s latest financing: Base’s press page lists subsequent coverage of a $1 billion Series C. The Series B nevertheless marked an important step in Base’s plan to deploy batteries, build a planned Texas factory, expand utility partnerships and grow its distributed-energy operations.

What the funding covered

Gunderson Dettmer, which advised Addition and a16z, identified the four investors as co-leads. The financing also named Altimeter, Terrain, Thrive Ventures or Thrive Capital, and Trust Ventures as participants. Addition’s Lee Fixel was reported to join Base’s board alongside Valor Equity Partners’ Antonio Gracias.

Base said the capital would support:

  • Expansion of its residential distributed-storage fleet
  • Development of distributed-energy technology
  • A planned battery factory in Texas
  • Utility partnerships in Texas and beyond
  • Hiring engineers and energy-market operators
  • Additional battery deployments measured in megawatt-hours

The factory was a funded plan, not proof that Base was already manufacturing batteries in Texas. Factory construction, permitting, supply chains, quality control and production yields all remain meaningful execution challenges for a young hardware company.

Base is more than a battery installer

Base’s core proposition is a bundled service: it supplies electricity to the customer, installs a battery near the home’s electric meter and automatically manages that battery. During normal operation, the battery can charge when capacity is available. During an outage or a grid-support event, it can discharge to serve the home or support the wider electricity system.

That creates two distinct forms of value:

  • Backup value: keeping selected or whole-home loads operating when the utility supply fails.
  • Grid value: combining many household batteries into a virtual power plant that can respond to demand spikes, grid stress and other system needs.

The company’s description of how the service works presents Base as both the customer’s energy provider and backup-power provider. TechCrunch identified virtual-power-plant activity as a potentially important economic engine, but Base has not publicly disclosed a revenue breakdown proving that grid-services income is already profitable.

Why Texas is the initial market

Texas is a relevant testing ground for flexible residential power because ERCOT operates a largely independent electricity grid, summer demand can be extreme and the state has experienced major weather-related outages. Residential batteries could provide resilience for individual homes while also supplying flexible capacity across a large network.

That does not mean every Texas household experiences frequent prolonged outages. Routine short interruptions and exceptional events such as Winter Storm Uri or major storm damage create different technical and financial requirements. A battery can bridge an interruption, but multi-day resilience may require strict load management, solar generation, a generator or additional fuel and maintenance planning.

What customers paid then—and what current pages show

The economics reported with the 2025 funding announcement were approximately:

  • About $595 upfront for a 25 kWh battery
  • About $995 upfront for a 50 kWh configuration
  • A three-year commitment to buy electricity from Base
  • An energy price of roughly 9 cents per kWh, plus local utility delivery charges
  • Annual fees of approximately $225 to $345, depending on the plan

Those figures belong to the 2025 funding story and should not be treated as current quotes. Base’s current customer-facing pages display different pricing: a 25 kWh system with a $695 installation fee and $19 monthly membership, or a 50 kWh dual-battery configuration with a $995 installation fee and $29 monthly membership. The displayed plan runs for 36 months and includes a $50 refundable deposit credited toward installation.

Base also presents electricity pricing as a standard per-kWh rate plus utility transmission and delivery charges. On a CenterPoint-specific page, an example showed approximately 13.4 cents per kWh at 2,000 kWh per month. Rates and eligibility vary by location and utility territory, so the installation fee is not the total cost of the service.

Anyone comparing Base with an owned battery should calculate the full commitment: installation, membership charges, electricity rate, utility delivery charges, cancellation terms, possible rate changes and the value of owning—or not owning—the equipment.

How much backup can the batteries provide?

Battery capacity and usable runtime are not the same thing. Capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh); the inverter’s instantaneous output is measured in kilowatts (kW). Base support material lists an 11 kW inverter and discusses 25 kWh, 39.2 kWh and 50 kWh configurations.

Base advertises up to approximately 24 hours of backup for the 25 kWh system and up to 48 hours for the 50 kWh configuration under reduced-consumption conditions. Those are estimates, not guarantees for unrestricted whole-home operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Runtime depends on the household’s load, weather and battery settings. A refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, outlets and modest air-conditioning use consume far less energy than central air conditioning, electric water heating, an electric range, a pool pump, a well pump and an EV charger operating together.

High-load equipment also creates startup surges. A battery with enough stored energy may still be unable to start a compressor or motor if the inverter, transfer equipment or electrical service is undersized. Before installation, homeowners should identify essential circuits, continuous loads and motor-start requirements rather than relying on the headline kWh figure.

Construction and installation considerations

For a home or construction project, a battery service such as Base still depends on ordinary site and electrical constraints. Base says it manages permitting and installs equipment near the meter, but eligibility is location-specific. Important questions include:

  • Is there suitable exterior wall or pad space near the electrical service?
  • Can the existing service and panel accommodate the equipment?
  • What clearances, flood protections, fire-safety rules and local setbacks apply?
  • Will the project require homeowner, landlord, HOA or multifamily approval?
  • How will critical circuits and high-surge appliances be handled?
  • What happens if permitting or inspection reveals that the property needs electrical upgrades?

Base lists UL 1973, UL 1741, UL 9540 and UL 9540A on its press page. Those certifications are relevant safety credentials, but they do not remove the need for site-specific design, code compliance, permitting and inspection.

Solar compatibility

Base’s customer-facing material says customers with solar can sell excess generation back to Base. The exact compensation and interconnection treatment should be checked for the customer’s utility territory. Adding solar does not automatically guarantee multi-day outage power: cloudy weather, solar-inverter configuration, battery state of charge and household demand remain limiting factors.

How Base compares with conventional alternatives

Option Primary model Important trade-off
Base Power Bundled electricity service and managed residential battery Lower displayed upfront cost, but electricity-provider switch, monthly fees, contract terms and dispatch control apply
Tesla Powerwall Customer-owned stationary battery More direct ownership, but purchase and installation costs must be paid separately
Generac PWRcell Installer-sold solar and storage system Often suited to customers building an integrated solar-storage system
Enphase IQ Battery Modular battery integrated with Enphase equipment Most compelling where ecosystem compatibility and staged expansion matter
Standby generator Combustion-based long-duration backup Can run as long as fuel is available, but adds noise, emissions, maintenance and fuel logistics

Base should not automatically be described as cheaper than a Powerwall or another owned system. The fair comparison includes the contracted electricity cost, delivery charges, fees, incentives, maintenance, ownership and expected service life—not just the initial installation payment.

The risks behind the virtual-power-plant thesis

Base’s business depends on successfully solving several problems at once:

  • Manufacturing: A Texas factory brings construction, supply-chain, quality and cost risks.
  • Installation scale: Each home requires site work, electrical integration, permits and inspections.
  • Battery degradation: Frequent grid dispatch may affect useful life and replacement economics.
  • Market rules: Revenue opportunities depend on ERCOT rules, utility tariffs and compensation for distributed resources.
  • Customer retention: The economics require customers to remain electricity customers, not merely battery hosts.
  • Geographic expansion: Other states have different retail-electricity rules, utility structures, interconnection requirements and outage patterns.

The strongest version of the thesis is therefore conditional: Base may be able to reduce the upfront barrier to residential backup while aggregating enough batteries to create grid value. That is different from proving that every battery pays for itself or that grid revenue already supports the company at national scale.

What happened after the Series B?

Base’s press page now lists later coverage involving utility partnerships, expansion into additional Texas markets, residential distributed-energy programs and a subsequent $1 billion financing round. Those developments should be treated separately from the April 2025 Series B; the Series C’s precise date, structure, valuation and investor list are not established by the Series B announcement itself.

Bottom line

Base Power is trying to turn home backup batteries into an energy-service network. Its differentiation is not simply a larger battery at a lower upfront price. The company is combining installation, electricity supply, automated dispatch and virtual-power-plant operations.

For homeowners, the key question is whether the bundled cost and contract obligations make sense for their location, load profile and outage needs. For the energy industry, the larger test is whether Base can install and finance hardware efficiently, retain electricity customers, preserve adequate backup capacity and convert aggregated battery flexibility into durable grid revenue.
