Verdict: The Bambu Lab P1S Combo remains one of the easiest ways to get fast, enclosed FDM printing with minimal hardware tuning. Its automated calibration, reliable first layers, CoreXY motion system and automatic filament handling make it particularly appealing for construction professionals, workshop users and serious hobbyists who need prototypes, jigs, brackets or models without constantly adjusting an open-frame printer.
Buy the Combo if you will regularly switch colors or materials, or if automatic loading and unloading will save you hands-on time. Buy the P1S alone if most of your work uses one spool at a time. The “Combo” label now covers different configurations, including bundles with the original AMS and newer bundles with AMS 2 Pro, so check the exact US package and price before ordering.

What the Bambu Lab P1S is
The P1S is an enclosed FDM/FFF 3D printer with a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume. It uses a direct-drive extruder, automatic bed leveling, vibration compensation, filament runout detection, auxiliary cooling and an activated-carbon filter. Its 0.4 mm stainless-steel nozzle reaches 300°C, while the heated bed reaches 100°C.
That combination makes it suitable for everyday PLA and PETG work, while the enclosure gives it a better starting point for ABS and ASA than an open-frame printer. It does not, however, make every engineering material risk-free or effortless. Ventilation, filament drying, suitable profiles and material-specific safety practices still matter.

Maximum specifications include 500 mm/s tool-head speed and 20,000 mm/s² acceleration. Those are ceilings, not promises that every model will print at those values. Actual results depend on layer height, geometry, cooling, acceleration limits, nozzle size and the selected filament profile. Bambu Lab’s product listing gives the current specification and configuration details.
What the Combo adds
The Combo adds Bambu Lab’s Automatic Material System. The original AMS holds four 1.75 mm filament spools and automates selection, loading, unloading and switching. Current Bambu listings also include P1S combinations with the newer AMS 2 Pro, so buyers should not assume that every product called “P1S Combo” contains the same AMS hardware.
Depending on the exact bundle, the package may include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The enclosed P1S printer.
- An original AMS or AMS 2 Pro.
- A hub or buffer, where required by that configuration.
- PTFE tubing, cables and power components.
- The build plate and standard nozzle assembly.
- Starter filament or other promotional accessories, which can vary.
Confirm the contents on the product page immediately before purchase. The original AMS provides more contained filament storage and space for desiccant, but that should not be confused with active heated drying. The AMS 2 Pro should likewise be judged by the capabilities of the exact bundle and current documentation, rather than by the generic word “Combo.” See Bambu’s AMS setup guide for the loading process.
Setup: quick to start, not instant to master
Bambu advertises setup in approximately 15 minutes. That is a reasonable description of getting the hardware assembled and operational, not of becoming proficient with 3D printing.
A first-time owner still needs to:
- Unpack the printer and remove transport restraints.
- Install the AMS, PTFE tube and required cables.
- Load filament and verify that it feeds correctly.
- Install Bambu Studio or Bambu Handy.
- Connect the printer, update firmware if prompted and select the correct printer profile.
- Choose the correct build plate, nozzle and filament settings.
- Run the initial calibration and test print.
The automated bed leveling and vibration compensation remove much of the traditional tuning burden. Beginners should still learn plate cleaning, filament selection, support settings and basic failure recovery. The official quick-start guide is the right reference for the exact hardware in the box.
Print quality: consistently good, not magically infallible
The available hands-on evidence points to strong out-of-box consistency. WIRED rated the P1S Combo 8/10 and reported clean first layers, a near-perfect Benchy and roughly a month of use without manually adjusting the bed level. Its review is a useful independent reference, but those results should not be read as a guarantee that every print will succeed.
Failures can still result from wet filament, a dirty or worn build plate, incorrect plate selection, poor adhesion, aggressive speeds, unsupported materials, warped ABS or ASA, AMS loading problems and poorly designed models. Automatic calibration cannot compensate for fingerprints on the plate or a damp spool.
For construction-related work, the important question is whether the printer can repeatedly produce usable parts: templates, scale models, cable guides, protective covers, jigs and noncritical brackets. For load-bearing, safety-critical or code-relevant components, validate the design and material independently rather than treating a successful print as proof of engineering performance.

Speed: genuinely quick, with conditions
The P1S is fast by consumer FDM standards. Bambu lists a maximum tool-head speed of 500 mm/s and maximum acceleration of 20,000 mm/s². WIRED reported sustained real-world printing above 200 mm/s and a Benchy completed in under 20 minutes. Bambu’s own approximately 18-minute Benchy claim applies to stated test conditions.
Those numbers are more useful as indicators of the printer’s motion capability than as universal job-time estimates. Small detailed parts, tall narrow parts, models with many walls, high-quality surface profiles and materials requiring slower cooling may print well below the headline speed. A completed, dimensionally usable part per hour matters more than a maximum tool-head figure.
High acceleration also creates vibration. WIRED found that an insufficiently sturdy table could shake and contribute to light stringing around sharp corners. Put the printer on a rigid, stable surface. Leave clearance behind it for the purge outlet, tubing and ventilation.
The AMS is more useful than multicolor marketing suggests
Four-color printing is the obvious feature, but automatic filament management may be the more practical benefit. The AMS can keep several spools connected, switch between materials during a project and remove the need to manually unload and reload filament for many jobs.
That is valuable when a workshop frequently moves between colors, uses a separate support material or prints several parts requiring different spools. It can also make unattended jobs more convenient. The AMS is less valuable when nearly every part is printed in one material and one color.
In Bambu Studio, the operator must still map the software’s filament assignments to the physical AMS slots. Third-party filament may not provide the same automatic color and material metadata as Bambu-branded spools. Before starting a job, confirm the slot, material and color assignments on screen.

Bambu’s documentation covers AMS use in Bambu Studio. RFID-tagged Bambu filament is a convenience, not a requirement for printing ordinary third-party filament.
Multicolor printing creates real waste
The AMS uses a single nozzle, so each material transition requires purging the previous filament. Multicolor jobs can therefore produce purge coils, a purge tower, longer print times and substantially more filament consumption than the model’s nominal weight suggests.
WIRED found the purge system effective but inelegant: waste exits from the rear, and warm filament may occasionally need to be cleared manually. Bambu Studio allows purge adjustments, but reducing purge volume can increase the risk of color contamination or poor transitions.

Practical precautions include:
- Place a box or waste chute behind the printer.
- Leave enough rear clearance for purge material to exit freely.
- Inspect the outlet during or after long multicolor jobs.
- Do not assume four-color printing is economical.
- Use single-color or color-by-object strategies when appearance allows.
- Consider a multi-toolhead system if minimizing purge waste is more important than ecosystem simplicity.
The AMS can save labor while still wasting material. Those are separate trade-offs.

Materials and limitations
Bambu lists the P1S as suitable for PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET, ABS and ASA, and capable of PA and PC with appropriate settings. Practical expectations vary:
| Material | Practical expectation |
|---|---|
| PLA | The easiest starting material and the broadest beginner use case. |
| PETG | Useful for tougher parts, but can string and adhere aggressively. |
| TPU | Possible, but flexible filament and AMS feeding require particular care. |
| ABS/ASA | The enclosure helps with drafts and warping, but ventilation and thermal control remain important. |
| PA/PC | Technically possible, but drying and material-specific profiles are essential. |
| Carbon-fiber or glass-fiber blends | Require hardened components and should not be treated as an out-of-box workload. |
The included stainless-steel nozzle is not the same as a hardened nozzle. Bambu specifically warns that fiber-reinforced materials require upgrades to the extruder and hot end. Do not use the P1S enclosure or carbon filter as a reason to print ABS, ASA or other materials indoors without suitable ventilation.
Software, remote control and privacy
Bambu Studio handles slicing, printer control and AMS management. Bambu Handy provides a mobile workflow for monitoring and control. Bambu’s documentation describes remote control and monitoring through networked operation, including WAN and LAN options.
Cloud-connected operation is the simplest route to remote access and account-based workflows. LAN-only mode is more attractive to users who want to reduce cloud dependence, but some cloud features, account workflows and integrations are unavailable. Bambu says Developer Mode works exclusively in LAN Mode and cannot operate simultaneously with Bambu Cloud.

It does not have the X1C’s Micro Lidar system, so do not buy it expecting the same advanced sensing or inspection features.
Maintenance: low-maintenance, not maintenance-free
The P1S automates calibration, but it still needs routine care. Clean the build plate with a suitable detergent, avoid touching the printing surface and replace worn plates when adhesion becomes inconsistent. Remove purge material from the rear outlet and inspect the nozzle and hot end after failed prints.
Also monitor the belts, fans, PTFE tubes and AMS feed path. Follow Bambu’s current maintenance documentation for lubrication and inspection intervals rather than relying on a fixed schedule that may change with firmware or documentation updates. Wear parts such as nozzles, cutters, wipers, build plates and PTFE tubing eventually need replacement.
Many apparent printer problems are actually filament problems. Dry moisture-sensitive filament, check for tangled spools and inspect cardboard spool edges before changing hardware.

Common problems and recovery steps
AMS loading failure
Likely causes include spool friction, tangled or brittle filament, wet material, incorrect spool dimensions, debris in the PTFE path or filament that was not fully inserted.
- Pause or stop the job safely.
- Identify the AMS slot and filament path.
- Remove a tangled spool or cut damaged filament.
- Retract the filament using the on-screen procedure.
- Inspect the AMS inlet and PTFE tube.
- Reload the filament and verify the material mapping.
- Resume only after filament reaches the extruder normally.
Purge material blocks the rear outlet
Pause the job if necessary and wait until heated or moving parts are safe before clearing the obstruction. A rear collection box or chute prevents loose purge material from accumulating around the outlet. Never reach into moving or heated areas during an active print.
Poor first-layer adhesion
Check the selected build plate, plate cleanliness, bed temperature, filament moisture, plate wear, model contact area and whether a brim is needed. Automatic leveling is not a substitute for a clean, undamaged surface.
Warping or cracking
The enclosure helps with ABS, ASA, PC and nylon, but large parts can still warp or crack because of drafts, insufficient bed preparation, damp filament or rapid cooling. Use material-specific profiles and keep the chamber environment as stable as practical.
Wrong third-party filament assignment
Stop before printing, compare the software filament number with the physical AMS slot, reassign the material in Bambu Studio and confirm the mapping on the print-start screen. Save or reselect the correct profile after changing a spool.
Which version and price should you buy?
Pricing is unusually important because the P1S Combo name now covers more than one configuration. During the August 2026 research period, a US Bambu listing showed a P1S with AMS 2 Pro at $869, reduced from $1,148, while WIRED linked to an earlier/original configuration at $550 through Best Buy. These prices are not interchangeable: they may represent different AMS hardware, promotions and accessory packages.
Check the official Bambu US listing immediately before purchase and verify whether the bundle includes the original AMS or AMS 2 Pro, the required hub or buffer, filament and other accessories. Do not use an old review price as a current buying recommendation.
P1S Combo versus the alternatives
P1S Combo versus P1S alone
Choose the printer-only P1S when most work uses one spool and one material, manual changes are acceptable and the price difference could buy useful extras such as a spare build plate, filament dryer or hardened components. Choose the Combo when automatic switching will be used regularly, not merely because multicolor printing sounds interesting.

The A1 series is an open-frame, lower-cost alternative for users focused on PLA, PETG, TPU and similar materials who do not need an enclosure. It can use AMS Lite for four-color printing, but it is not a direct replacement for the P1S when enclosure-assisted ABS or ASA printing, a more contained chamber or higher-temperature work matters. See Bambu’s FAQ for current A1 and AMS Lite information.
P1S versus newer enclosed Bambu models
In 2026, newer enclosed Bambu models such as the P2S deserve comparison. They may offer newer sensing or quality-of-life features, while the P1S may remain more attractive when discounted and supported by a mature ecosystem. Check current availability and the price gap on Bambu’s printer collection before assuming the P1S is the best current enclosed option.
P1S versus non-Bambu printers
Consider another platform if you need a fully offline and open ecosystem, easier access to generic replacement parts, a multi-toolhead system with less purge waste, a substantially larger build volume or a specialized engineering-material workflow. The P1S prioritizes automation and convenience over maximum openness and repairability.
Quick Recap
Who should buy the P1S Combo?
- Beginner seeking the easiest route: A strong choice if you want an enclosed printer that usually needs less tuning than an Ender-style machine.
- Construction model and prototype maker: Well suited to repeated jigs, templates, scale models and noncritical workshop parts, provided the material and load requirements are appropriate.
- Multicolor hobbyist: Buy the Combo if the convenience justifies purge waste and longer jobs.
- Single-color functional-part maker: Start with the P1S alone unless automatic filament management solves a real workflow problem.
- ABS/ASA user: The enclosure helps, but ventilation, drying and careful profiles remain necessary.
- Offline or privacy-conscious buyer: Confirm that LAN-only operation provides the features you need before buying.
- Existing P1S owner: Upgrade only if the AMS or newer bundle features address a recurring workflow need; a second printer may be more useful than replacing a working machine.
