The first barge carrying the main steelwork for the Narrow Water Bridge reached Warrenpoint Harbour in Northern Ireland on 20 October 2026, moving the cross-border project into its main-span installation phase. The Caroline delivered an 82-metre deck section and the bridge’s 114-metre pylon after a five-day voyage from Belgium. A second barge carrying the remaining fixed-span deck section was due to follow, while installation of the delivered components is expected to take eight to 12 weeks, subject to weather and operating conditions.
What arrived at Warrenpoint Harbour?
The Caroline arrived with two of the bridge’s three major steel components: Deck 2, an approximately 82-metre section, and the 114-metre pylon. Together with Deck 1, which was shipped separately, the components weigh approximately 2,245 tonnes.

The weights for the individual pieces were reported by Afloat; BAM UK & Ireland gives the combined weight of the three principal steel components as approximately 2,245 tonnes.
How did the bridge sections get from Belgium to Warrenpoint?
Caroline departed Belgium on 15 October. Under tow from Multratug 29, it travelled through Dutch canals, crossed the North Sea to Carlingford Lough and then continued up the Newry River to Warrenpoint Harbour. The route combined inland waterways and exposed sea passage, making tides, weather and marine operating conditions important to the delivery schedule.

The second barge, Karel Victor, left Belgium on 18 October carrying Deck 1. Its crossing was expected to take roughly seven days, although that estimate was conditional on weather and marine conditions.
How will BAM install the deck and pylon?
BAM has already installed temporary supports and skid tracks in the Newry River. These will allow the steelwork to be transferred from the barges and moved into its planned position. A 1,500-tonne crane is being assembled on the southern embankment for the lifting operation.

- Complete the main-span installation: The components are aligned and secured as the bridge structure takes shape.
BAM expects this installation phase to last eight to 12 weeks. The duration is an estimate rather than a fixed completion date because lifting and marine operations can be paused by wind, tide, river conditions or other operating constraints.

What kind of bridge is Narrow Water Bridge?
Narrow Water Bridge will be a 195-metre, two-span cable-stayed crossing linking Cornamucklagh near Omeath in County Louth with Narrow Water near Warrenpoint in County Down. It is designed for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, creating a new crossing around Carlingford Lough.
The shorter northern span will contain a movable bascule section. Opening that section will allow marine traffic to continue using the Newry River rather than permanently closing the navigation route. Belgian steel specialist Aelterman is fabricating the bascule span, with delivery expected in October 2027.
When will Narrow Water Bridge open?
Main construction is currently forecast to finish in the fourth quarter of 2027. After construction, the bridge will require testing and commissioning, with opening forecast for early 2028. Both dates are projections, not completed milestones, and may change as marine works, fabrication and commissioning progress.

Who is funding and delivering the project?
The project is funded through the Irish Government’s Shared Island Fund. Louth County Council is delivering it with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, while BAM UK & Ireland is the main contractor.
Project partners say the crossing is intended to improve connections between the Mourne Mountains and the Cooley Peninsula, support tourism and active travel, and strengthen economic links around Carlingford Lough. Its practical benefit will depend on completing the fixed and movable spans, commissioning the finished structure and maintaining safe navigation on the Newry River.
John Wilkinson, BAM UK & Ireland’s chief operating officer, described the delivery as requiring “meticulous planning, specialist engineering and international collaboration” to transport and install the structures safely. Taoiseach Micheál Martin called the arrival a major construction milestone and said the bridge would bring communities closer together while supporting recreation, sustainable tourism and regional economic development.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why was the Narrow Water Bridge steelwork built in Belgium?
The principal steel components were fabricated in Belgium and transported by specialist barges, allowing the large deck sections and pylon to reach the site by water rather than by an overland route through towns and border crossings. The available data identifies Aelterman as the Belgian specialist fabricating the later bascule span.
