Balsa is an exceptionally light, soft wood from the tropical tree Ochroma pyramidale. Builders and model makers use it where low weight, buoyancy or an insulating core matters—but its strength, density and durability vary, so the right stock depends on the job.

What is balsa wood?

Balsa comes from Ochroma pyramidale, a tree in the Malvaceae family. Botanically it is a hardwood, but that classification does not mean it is hard to the touch: balsa is very soft and light. Kew explains that its large, thin-walled cells contain little lignin, and dry wood contains much air. Kew’s balsa tree profile describes the species as native to South American rainforests; PROTA gives a broader natural range from southern Mexico through tropical Central and South America to Bolivia. Plantations in other tropical countries are also reported. These native-range and plantation-supply descriptions refer to different things.

Kew reports that more than 95% of balsa wood comes from plantations in Ecuador. Separately, a 2008 PROTA profile estimates Ecuador supplied 80–90% of traded world volume; that is a historical profile estimate, not a current market measurement. PROTA’s species profile describes balsa as a fast-growing pioneer tree. Under suitable South American conditions, it reports mean annual diameter growth of up to 10 cm and heights of 20–25 m after 10–12 years. Growth slows after 12–15 years, and plantation rotations generally do not exceed 7–8 years. These are reference figures, not guarantees for every site.

What are balsa’s properties?

Density is a key reason balsa is chosen, but there is no single weight that describes every piece. PROTA reports a range of 40–320 kg/m³ at 12% moisture content. It says high-grade timber is generally below 150 kg/m³ at that moisture content and often comes from young trees around 8–9 years old. In Costa Rican samples, the outermost 3 cm averaged 2.2 times the density of the inner 3 cm. These reported measurements illustrate how much density can vary with the tree and the wood’s position.

A January 2025 specification sheet from supplier Ochroma Group lists an example average dried weight of 9 lb/ft³ (150 kg/m³), Janka hardness of 67 lbf (300 N), modulus of rupture of 2,840 lbf/in² (19.6 MPa), and elastic modulus of 538,000 lbf/in² (3.71 GPa). These are supplier-published specifications for its material, not universal values or directly interchangeable with PROTA’s broader density range. Ochroma Group’s specification sheet gives the details.

Balsa is generally soft, weak and non-durable, and it is prone to insect attack. USDA’s Handbook No. 207 describes its buoyancy and efficiency as heat and sound insulation; the handbook excerpt is available in the USDA publication. The retrieved excerpt does not establish the handbook’s edition date or full surrounding context.

What is balsa wood used for?

  • Models and lightweight structures: Model making and aircraft construction are established uses. Supplier product formats include long-grain stock for model airplane wings and ribs.
  • Buoyancy: Balsa is used in buoys, life jackets and belts, and surfboards.
  • Composite cores: End-grain balsa can serve as a core in sandwich composites. Ochroma Group describes end-grain core panels for boat decks and wind turbine blades.
  • Other applications: PROTA lists boats and ships, toys, laboratory mounting boards, surgical splints, fragile-goods packaging and insulation.

These uses are not interchangeable recommendations for every project. A construction or composite application needs stock selected to suit the design and specified loads; the sources here do not provide project-specific structural design values.

How to choose balsa stock

There is no standardized consumer grading system established in the cited sources. Compare the actual stock and the demands of the build rather than relying on the word “balsa” alone.

  • Density and weight: Ask for the specific product’s density or weight and how it was measured. Do not assume one supplier’s figure applies to another piece.
  • Grain orientation and dimensions: Confirm whether the stock is sheet, block, long-grain or end-grain core, and check that its dimensions suit the design.
  • Stiffness and strength: Match documented properties to the intended use. Do not treat a general species profile or a supplier example as a substitute for project-specific design requirements.
  • Moisture and conditioning: Check the moisture basis behind any density figure; the PROTA range cited above is reported at 12% moisture content.
  • Price and availability: Confirm both for the required grade, format and location; the cited references do not establish current retail inventory or pricing.

For hobby projects, balsa sheets or blocks are a product fit for model building. Search for “balsa wood sheets,” then compare the dimensions, density and grain of the available stock with the build.

Working with balsa: practical limitations

PROTA says balsa is easy to work by hand and machine, but sharp tools help prevent crumbling. It glues well and accepts stains, polish and paint. Its high absorbency can affect finishing, so plan for that when choosing a coating and applying it.
