555 timer

Automatic Water Level Controller for a Pump Using a 555 Timer IC

A 555-based controller can start a pump at a low water level and stop it at a higher one, but sensor wiring and pump-side switching must match the specific design and load.

A 555-based water-level controller can start a pump when water falls below a lower probe and stop it when water reaches a higher probe. The 555 supplies the control logic; a transistor and relay handle the switching interface. The exact probe wiring and circuit depend on the schematic you follow, so a 555 controller is not a universal drop-in pump circuit.

How the controller starts and stops the pump

The circuit uses two distinct water levels: a lower level to call for pumping and an upper level to end it. That gap creates a control band, so small fluctuations at one level do not necessarily make the pump switch repeatedly.

  1. Water falls below the lower sensing point: the sensing circuit changes the 555 trigger condition. The NE555 trigger input responds when it falls below approximately one-third of the supply voltage, setting the internal latch and driving the output high.
  2. The output activates a driver: a transistor interfaces the 555 output with a relay coil. The relay contacts then switch the pump circuit.
  3. Water reaches the upper sensing point: the upper-level sensing path changes the circuit’s threshold or reset condition, stopping the pump. Reset overrides the timer’s other inputs.

The precise sensing and latching arrangement varies by schematic. The one-third trigger and two-thirds threshold levels describe the NE555’s nominal internal switching references; consult the Texas Instruments xx555 datasheet, Revision K for the specific device’s characteristics.

What the circuit blocks do

Block Purpose Design consideration
555 timer Provides the control logic that responds to the sensing circuit. Use the exact 555 variant and manufacturer datasheet specified for the schematic; input thresholds and output characteristics are device-dependent. See TI’s xx555 datasheet.
Level sensors Provide separate low-level start and high-level stop conditions. Published examples use conductive probes, but probe number, placement, material, water chemistry, wiring, and input conditioning are design-specific. The available examples do not validate one probe arrangement for every tank. See Electronics For You’s controller example and IDC Technologies’ circuit description.
Transistor driver and relay Interface the timer’s control output with the pump’s switched circuit. One Electronics For You example describes a BC547 transistor and relay; another schematic depicts transistor stages. Select switching hardware for the actual pump voltage, current, and starting load rather than copying a relay from an unrelated diagram. See Electronics For You and the Montana State-hosted schematic.
Control and pump power Supply the low-voltage control circuit separately from the pump load. The Montana State-hosted example marks a 12 V control supply and a 220 V pump side. Those labels describe that drawing, not a general rating, safety certification, or approval for a particular installation. See the example schematic.

Read a schematic as an example, not a universal build plan

Published 555 controller diagrams differ in their sensing paths and probe counts. The Montana State-hosted drawing, attributed in the PDF to ElecCircuit, shows three probes along with a 555, transistor stages, relay, and separate control and pump supply labels. Other descriptions use different arrangements. Follow one complete schematic, including its component values and wiring, rather than combining fragments from multiple diagrams.

Prostormer 1HP 3700GPH Submersible Sump Pump with Automatic Float Switch
  • If you need the pump to work in a low water level environment (the water level does not exceed the pump), the float switch need to be locked on the pump
  • The working principle of the water pump is that the float switch goes down vertically, the beads inside are stuck on the line under the float switch, and the water pump starts automatically
  • Kindly Tip: When you start using the pump, it must be fully submerged in water at a slight angle and hold it underwater for 20 to 30 seconds to ensure all trapped air is thoroughly expelled before operation
  • 1 HP High Power: Prostormer Sump Pump uses 1 HP power, Max 3700 Gallon Per Hour rating tackles any draining job at a fraction of the time
  • Multi Outlet Sizes: 3 different diameters outlets (1 inch ,1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch) to adapte for different size hoses as needed according to the flow rate. The bigger the flow is, the wider the outlet should be

A diagram that labels a mains voltage does not establish that its construction is safe, that its relay is suitable for your motor, or that it meets local electrical requirements. Keep exposed mains wiring and relay contacts isolated from the low-voltage control circuit, and have mains-side installation designed or checked by a qualified electrician in accordance with applicable rules.

Checks before choosing or building a controller

  • Confirm the pump load: identify its supply voltage, running current, and starting load; choose relay contacts and associated wiring for those conditions.
  • Plan sensor behavior: decide where the low start and high stop levels belong, and consider what should happen if a probe, connection, or control supply fails. The cited examples do not establish a universal fail-safe response.
  • Assess the sensing medium: conductive probes depend on water and installation conditions. Probe geometry, corrosion resistance, wiring, and signal conditioning need to suit the tank and water; these details are not fully validated by the example sources.
  • Separate control from load wiring: do not treat the 555 output as a motor-power output. Use the specified driver and switching stage, and observe safe isolation and enclosure practices.
  • Compare alternatives on the real requirements: float switches avoid probe-conductivity sensing but have their own mechanical installation and maintenance considerations. The available sources do not provide comparative test results proving that either approach is superior.

What the published examples establish—and what they do not

Electronics For You’s February 2018 article and IDC Technologies’ circuit description show the general low-level-start/high-level-stop approach with a 555, transistor sensing or driver stages, and relay switching. The Montana State-hosted PDF is a useful example schematic, not a certification document. These sources do not establish a pump rating, measured efficiency, cost saving, failure rate, or suitability for a particular installation.
