An automatic jar opener clamps the jar and turns its lid for you. But the best choice depends on which motion you need help with: powered rotation reduces lid-twisting, while a fixed manual opener grips the lid and still requires you to turn the jar. Availability matters, too: Hamilton Beach says its documented OpenEase model 76800 is no longer available.
How an automatic jar opener works
Hamilton Beachโs OpenEase model 76800 shows the powered approach. Place the device over a glass jar and press the button: outer arms grip the jar while inner arms grip and rotate the lid. The manufacturer says the device releases the jar and lid when you press its release control. That mechanism reduces the need to twist the lid by hand, but it does not establish that the opener will suit every user or jar.
Hamilton Beach lists compatibility with screw-on lids from 1 to 4 inches in diameter, operation on two AA batteries, an estimate of 250 or more jars per battery set, and a one-year warranty. These are the manufacturerโs published specifications, not independent test results. The same product page is marked โNO LONGER AVAILABLE,โ so treat model 76800 as an example of how the category works, not as a confirmed current purchase option. Choose by the movement you can manage
- If turning the jar is difficult: look for a powered model that clamps the container and rotates the lid. Confirm the exact model is currently sold before relying on a listing.
- If gripping the lid is difficult but turning the jar is manageable: a fixed lid gripper may help, provided you can install it securely and have enough space to turn the jar.
- If you use varied jars: compare the lid diameter range and check the jar material and shape. A stated diameter range alone does not guarantee a secure fit on every container.
- If you want a portable tool: a countertop device avoids permanent mounting, but check its battery requirements and how its arms fit your jars.
Check fit and use safely
For OpenEase model 76800, Hamilton Beachโs instructions state: โDo not use with plastic jars. Jar opener is intended only for glass jars with screw-on lids.โ The manufacturer also says the outer arms must fit securely to prevent slipping and advises placing a hand on top of the opener when using tapered jars. Before choosing any device, compare its stated lid range with the jars you actually use, note whether it requires a particular jar material or shape, and make sure you can position or mount it as directed. If a grip is loose or the tool slips, stop and reposition it rather than forcing the mechanism.

What to verify before buying
- Confirm the exact model is sold now. A product page or old marketplace result is not proof of current stock. Hamilton Beachโs page for model 76800 says it is no longer available.
- Read the fit requirements. Check lid diameter, permitted jar material, shape limitations, and any stated positioning instructions.
- Match the mechanism to your remaining movement. Powered rotation turns the lid; a fixed manual aid leaves you to turn the jar.
- Check installation, power, and support. Verify mounting needs or battery requirements, then confirm the warranty and support terms for the listing and region where you plan to buy.
Hamilton Beachโs product page also gives a dated statistic: it says approximately 50 million Americans live with arthritis, citing the 2007โ2009 National Health Interview Survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. This is not a current estimate. It does not show that one opener will work for every person with arthritis.
