Village in Austin, Texas, is adding 100 3D-printed homes as one part of a much larger supportive-housing expansion. ICON announced the homes in December 2024; Axios Austin reported on July 15, 2026, that the broader expansion was underway. The project pairs a construction method with a community-based housing model—it is not evidence that 3D printing alone solves homelessness.
Where is the 3D-printed housing community?
Community First! Village is in Austin, Texas. It is a development by Mobile Loaves & Fishes for people coming out of chronic homelessness. Its approach combines housing with community and support, rather than treating a building as the whole intervention. Stand Together’s account of the model quotes Mobile Loaves & Fishes founder Alan Graham: “Housing alone won’t solve homelessness, but community will.”
How many homes are being built?
The figures describe different points in the project’s timeline and should not be read as a final inventory. ICON’s December 19, 2024 announcement said construction was underway on 100 3D-printed townhomes and family homes, ranging from 380 to 1,040 square feet. ICON described those homes as part of an expansion adding 127 acres and nearly 1,400 homes across two phases, with an estimated capacity of 1,800 formerly homeless individuals. Those are announcement plans and estimates, not a verified completed build-out. ICON’s announcement gives the project details.
In a later status report published July 15, 2026, Axios Austin reported that the expansion was underway and would add more than 1,300 homes, including about 100 built by ICON. Axios also reported a $225 million expansion cost, funded by private donations and government grants. The 2024 and 2026 totals come from different dated descriptions of a plan still underway in the later account; neither establishes the final completed count.

What does “3D-printed home” mean here?
ICON’s system uses large-scale robotic equipment to build walls in layers. The term does not mean every component is printed: a 2024 Wells Fargo Stories account says the homes it describes use traditional methods for roofs, windows and doors. The project is therefore a mix of printed and conventionally built elements.
The same Wells Fargo account offered a dated 2024 snapshot: Mobile Loaves & Fishes founder Alan Graham said the Village then had 535 homes, 17 of them printed by ICON. That figure is not current inventory. Wells Fargo Stories also reported a $500,000 Wells Fargo Foundation grant to Mobile Loaves & Fishes for Initiative 99-designed homes; it is a specific grant, not the stated funding source for the entire later expansion.

Does 3D printing solve homelessness?
No evidence cited for this project shows that printing by itself produces a housing outcome or ends homelessness. The construction technology is one tool used within a broader housing community. Mobile Loaves & Fishes President and Chief Goodness Officer Amber Fogarty described the technology’s potential as helping scale the organization’s model and help other communities replicate its approach, rather than as a stand-alone solution. Stand Together’s account attributes that view to Fogarty.
That distinction matters when comparing projects. A temporary shelter pilot, interim housing and permanent supportive housing serve different purposes; the presence of a 3D printer does not make their outcomes interchangeable.

How Austin’s project differs from other 3D-printed housing efforts
| Project | Housing and scale | Services or intended outcome | Reported stage and source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community First! Village, Austin, Texas | 100 ICON-built printed homes announced within a much larger village expansion | Supportive community for people coming out of chronic homelessness | Expansion reported underway in July 2026; Axios Austin |
| Chattanooga, Tennessee | Two temporary shelters using Branch Technology’s structural lattice | Daily support services and a path toward permanent housing | The city reported that the first two pilot residents moved into permanent housing after 30 days; this is an outcome for two people, not evidence about Austin or proof the printing method caused the transition. City of Chattanooga |
| Welcome Home Village, San Luis Obispo, California | 54 planned units: 14 interim and 40 permanent | Supportive housing with on-site services | DignityMoves announced groundbreaking on June 25, 2025, with Azure Printed Homes as construction partner. DignityMoves |
These examples are separate projects with different operators, construction partners, housing types and stages. Chattanooga’s reported move to permanent housing concerned two pilot residents; it should not be presented as a result of Community First! Village. San Luis Obispo’s unit mix is a project plan, not a completed outcome.

What the Austin project does—and does not—show
- It shows how a construction technology can contribute a defined portion of a larger supportive-housing development.
- It does not establish that all Community First! Village homes are 3D-printed, or that the printed units alone account for the project’s social purpose.
- Its announced capacity and home totals are project estimates; the July 2026 status report says the expansion was underway, not complete.
