It guides a person using ordinary woodworking tools; it is not an automated saw. A 2025 full-scale mock-up evaluation reported millimeter precision for joint fabrication and 3 mm positioning accuracy within beams up to 3 m long—two distinct results, not a claim that every cut is accurate to less than a millimeter.
How augmented reality guides carpentry
The system combines camera-based computer vision, sensors, tracking markers and a display to align a digital workspace with physical timber. EPFL describes its goal as bringing computer processing to manual fabrication while retaining a carpenter’s dexterity. Colored lines can show where to place a tool, how deep to drill, a cutting angle, cut length and other plan details. EPFL’s overview explains the intended workflow.
In the reported process, the operator scans timber, applies markers that help the system identify each piece’s position and orientation, and loads a woodworking plan as a 3D model. The system tracks the timber and tool so instructions stay aligned as work moves. New Atlas describes the main display as a tablet attached to a power tool and transferable between tools; that is secondary reporting, not a statement of a universally compatible mount or tested retail product. New Atlas’s account provides that hardware detail.
The display is guidance, not physical restraint: the carpenter still handles the tool and performs the operation. EPFL researcher Andrea Settimi described real-time feedback when a tool or beam slips, allowing the operator to see how to adjust movement. This makes alignment feedback central to the concept, but does not establish that the system removes the need for judgment, safe tool handling or all conventional setup.

What the reported precision figures mean
The figures describe different stages and should not be collapsed into one accuracy claim.
| Reported result | What it measures | Source and context |
|---|---|---|
| Millimeter precision | Joint fabrication in the full-scale mock-up evaluation | EPFL researchers Andrea Settimi, Julien Gamerro and Yves Weinand, 2025 paper in Automation in Construction, volume 179, article 106433, published November 2025. Paper record and abstract; preprint metadata and abstract. |
| 3 mm accuracy | Positioning within beams up to 3 m long; this is not a universal cut-tolerance figure | Same 2025 full-scale mock-up evaluation: paper record and abstract. |
| Sub-millimeter precision | EPFL’s institutional description of the system’s holographic guidance or overlay, not the later mock-up fabrication outcome | EPFL institutional article, 11 April 2025: article. |
| 3.9 ± 1 mm positional error; 1.19 ± 0.6° angular accuracy | Tool-head pose detection by the TTool component in a preliminary evaluation, not the accuracy of a completed cut or joint | Augmented Carpentry project publications page: component summary. |
The peer-reviewed paper describes scanning full-scale mock-up elements and comparing them with corresponding digital execution models. That is evidence of a prototype evaluation under the reported conditions, not broad independent field validation. The available sources do not establish production reliability, system cost, throughput improvement or a controlled cost comparison with CNC or robotic fabrication.

How it compares with other fabrication workflows
Augmented Carpentry occupies a middle ground: it retains manual tool use while adding digital positioning guidance. The sources position it against conventional manual methods and costly robotic equipment, but do not report a controlled head-to-head trial for cost or throughput. The practical trade-offs therefore depend on a shop’s work and setup, rather than on a proven general winner.
| Workflow | How guidance or fabrication happens | What the cited evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional manual layout | Drawings, pencil marks, tape measures and jigs guide a person using tools. | A relevant baseline for comparison; the cited sources do not quantify its accuracy or cost against Augmented Carpentry. |
| Augmented Carpentry | A person uses manual tools while a tracked digital plan overlays positioning and fabrication instructions. | Prototype results include the full-scale mock-up figures above; controlled comparative cost and throughput results are not stated in the cited sources. |
| CNC or robotic fabrication | Computer-controlled equipment carries out fabrication operations. | Discussed as an alternative technology, but a controlled comparison of cost, throughput or quality with this system is not stated in the cited sources. |
For a small shop, digital guidance could be worth exploring where plans involve varied or one-off timber parts and fixed automation is not a fit. That is a potential use case, not a demonstrated saving or productivity result. Setup effort, tracking, hardware, operator workload and the need for fixtures would all matter in a real deployment.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
The 2025 paper and EPFL’s institutional account support describing Augmented Carpentry as an open-source research framework with full-scale mock-up evaluation. They do not establish that it is a commercially supported product or a proven replacement for a carpenter’s measuring and jig workflow. A separate 2025 study examined AR head-mounted displays for wood-frame wall assembly, not the tablet-based Augmented Carpentry system. Its abstract reports a within-subjects experiment with six participants and trade-offs among task performance, situational awareness, mental workload and movement; it is background on AR usability, not validation of this project. ASCE study record and abstract.
Although an adjustable tablet mount for power tools may be a relevant accessory category, the project sources do not specify or test a retail mount. Anyone considering one would need to verify fit, stability and safe clearance for the particular tool and task. The system’s open-source research status should not be read as a recommendation to buy a specific tool or accessory.
