Start with the chart for your exact grinder model: coffee grinder numbers, click counts and adjustment directions are not universal. As a broad guide, manufacturers place espresso toward the fine end and French press toward the coarse end, but the right setting still needs a test brew and small adjustments.

Why grinder numbers do not transfer between models
A number is meaningful only on the scale it belongs to. KitchenAid’s cited burr grinder has 70 settings; 1Zpresso documents click-based adjustment on its named grinder families; and De’Longhi uses a separate 1-to-7 convention on its machines. These are product-specific scales, not a shared standard. A setting labeled “4” on one grinder does not tell you where to set another.
Start by identifying the grinder’s brand and model, then find its official chart or manual. For example, 1Zpresso’s manual describes its own dial pointer and adjustment scale; it says higher numbers on the named families correspond to coarser grinds. De’Longhi’s instructions explain its own 1-to-7 convention. Neither direction should be assumed for another grinder.
How to read and use your grinder’s chart
- Match the chart to the exact model. Use the manufacturer’s manual or support page rather than a chart made for a similar-looking grinder.
- Find the indicator. Check which line, pointer or mark the manual tells you to read. Gaggia, for example, describes a red indicator; 1Zpresso describes a dial pointer.
- Check the finer/coarser direction. Read the model’s own instructions before turning the dial. Markings may use numbers, clicks, rotations or broad zones, and their direction can vary.
- Choose the method’s broad starting point. Use the chart’s espresso, filter or French-press guidance rather than translating another grinder’s number.
- Make a small change and test. Brew, assess the result, and adjust gradually. Follow the model’s instructions on whether adjustment should happen while grinding; procedures differ.
Why a chart is only a starting point
A method label cannot account for every bean or preference. Zwilling notes that bean type, room temperature and personal taste affect the result, and its grinder manual says, “Therefore, a „perfect grind“ does not exist.” Gaggia likewise advises gradual adjustment and preliminary tests. Use a gauge to orient your first try, then let the brew guide the next small adjustment.

Check compatibility before using an adjustment aid
Philips lists a CRP964 grind-setting key as a tool for adjusting grinder settings. The cited Philips support information does not establish that this key fits every grinder, so check compatibility with your exact model before buying or using it. Philips CRP964 product information.
If you are choosing between reference charts, prioritize one that names your exact grinder, clearly identifies its markings and adjustment direction, and treats brewing guidance as a starting point you can test. A general method chart can explain fine versus coarse, but it cannot supply a reliable numeric setting for an unspecified grinder.
