Yes. The yellow dandelion flower and the white puffball are successive stages of the same plant: after flowering, the head closes while seeds develop, then opens as a mature seed head ready for wind dispersal.

How a dandelion changes from flower to seed head

The familiar sequence has three visible stages: an open yellow flower head, a closed head where seeds develop, and a white, fluffy seed head. The change can seem surprising because the closed stage briefly hides the transition between flower and puffball.

1. A perennial plant produces leaves

Common dandelion is a perennial that reproduces by seed. Its leaves grow in a basal rosette, and new foliage can emerge from the same roots in the same spot. UMass Amherst describes the plant and its growth, while the University of Maine Cooperative Extension outlines its stages.

2. The yellow head is made up of many flowers

What people call a dandelion flower is a head composed of many small individual flowers, or florets—not one simple flower with petals. The Royal Horticultural Society says a head contains over a hundred individual flowers; UC IPM also describes the dandelion flower structure.

4. The mature head opens into a puffball

When the seeds are mature, the head opens into the white globe. Each seed is associated with a fine, fuzzy structure called a pappus. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension explains: “Each seed is attached to a characteristic fuzzy structure called a ‘pappus’ that allows the seed to be carried by the wind.”

5. Seeds disperse, and the perennial can regrow

Wind can carry the seeds away; a seed that takes root can begin a new plant. Meanwhile, the established perennial may produce new foliage from its roots.

When does the yellow flower turn into a puffball?

There is no universal number of days for the transition established by the cited sources. Flowering and development vary with conditions, so a fixed countdown should not be treated as reliable for an individual plant.

The US Forest Service describes common dandelion flowering from March to late fall in most US states, and throughout the year in warmer areas. That is a broad US pattern, not a date guarantee for every location or an international calendar. The Forest Service account provides its seasonality and flower-head range.

Why does the change attract attention online?

The closed interval helps explain why the shift can catch people off guard: the conspicuous yellow head disappears, then the white seed head appears. Treehugger published an article with the title “A Dandelion’s Natural Cycle Causes Chaos and Confusion on the Internet,” and ScienceAlert covered a viral timelapse of the cycle. That establishes online attention, not how widespread the misconception is or why any particular person holds it.

What counts as a dandelion?

Common dandelion is one familiar member of the wider Taraxacum group. The Royal Horticultural Society reports over 200 Taraxacum micro-species identified in the UK. That figure concerns UK taxonomic diversity, not life-cycle stages, and it is a reason not to assume that every plant casually called a dandelion has identical taxonomy. The flower-to-seed sequence described here is the familiar cycle of common dandelion.
