A few ladybugs indoors are usually more nuisance than danger: they generally do not harm people, pets, houseplants, or the home. The household guidance below focuses chiefly on the multicolored Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis), a species that gathers around buildings to overwinter. It may pinch if handled, release an odorous yellow fluid that can stain, and pose an allergy concern when large numbers collect indoors. For a small indoor cluster, avoid touching the beetles and remove them by vacuuming or sweeping them into a container.
What kind of ladybug is in the house?
“Ladybug” can mean several species. U.S. university extension guidance about beetles gathering inside homes chiefly concerns the multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis. It is a beneficial outdoor predator of aphids and other soft-bodied plant pests, but may enter buildings seeking a sheltered place to overwinter.

Its color can range from yellowish or tan to orange and red, and the number of spots varies. A dark M- or W-shaped mark behind the head is a useful identification clue, though color or spots alone are not reliable. Cornell describes the species’ appearance and seasonal behavior in its Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle guidance.
Are they harmful to people?
A few beetles
Occasional visitors are generally not dangerous. If handled, an Asian lady beetle may pinch or bite; University of New Hampshire Extension describes this as rare and similar to a pinprick, while University of Minnesota Extension notes that some can break skin and cause minor, short-lived discomfort. Avoid picking them up with bare hands.

Large indoor clusters
Allergy concerns are more relevant when many beetles gather indoors. Cornell says large numbers can cause allergy problems in sensitive individuals; other extension guidance also notes that some people may experience allergic reactions or skin irritation, including from exposure to dead beetles. This is a possible effect for some people, not a reaction expected from every indoor beetle.
Can they hurt pets?
Extension sources characterize Asian lady beetles as not generally dangerous to pets. Virginia Cooperative Extension notes that their defensive fluid tastes foul and likely discourages pets from eating many. The reviewed guidance does not establish an ingestion threshold or provide veterinary treatment advice, so it cannot be used to judge a particular pet’s exposure.

Do they damage houseplants, the home, or building materials?
Houseplants
These beetles prey on aphids, scales, mites, and other soft-bodied insects; they are not typical plant feeders. Seeing one on a houseplant does not by itself indicate plant damage. The sources describe indoor sightings as seasonal shelter-seeking behavior, rather than an indoor plant infestation.

When disturbed, beetles can release an unpleasant odor and yellowish fluid that may stain light-colored surfaces. They do not reproduce indoors, infest wood, or damage building materials according to the extension guidance. Beetles seen during winter or spring generally entered earlier while seeking shelter.

How to remove indoor lady beetles and reduce future entry
- Seal likely entry points. Caulk cracks and gaps around window frames, doors, vents, and other openings. Install door sweeps where needed, and repair or maintain window and door screens.
- Remove beetles already inside. Vacuum them or sweep them into a container. Vacuuming is less likely than sweeping to spread staining fluid; empty the vacuum promptly so beetles cannot escape.
- Skip indoor insecticide spraying as the default. UNH Extension advises against spraying insecticides on or inside buildings for these beetles. Exclusion and physical removal are the recommended approach in the cited guidance.
- Do not rely on a ladybug house to keep them out. UNH says a ladybug house may offer outdoor shelter, but it will not prevent beetles from entering the home.
Why do they appear indoors in winter or spring?
Multicolored Asian lady beetles gather around buildings while seeking protected places to spend the winter. Those appearing indoors in colder months or spring typically entered earlier through openings in the building envelope; the sources say they do not breed or lay eggs inside buildings. Sealing gaps before seasonal entry is therefore more useful than trying to stop reproduction indoors.
