IKEA’s 2026 KUSTFYR Halloween range includes a battery-operated LED hanging ghost and open-flame candles, so safety depends on the exact product, the child’s age, the animal’s behavior, placement, condition and supervision. For rooms that children or pets can enter, a battery-operated LED is the safer starting point. Treat every candle as a fire and burn hazard, not as child- or pet-safe decoration.
What “safe” means for IKEA Halloween decorations
There is no blanket IKEA certification that every Halloween decoration is safe for unsupervised children or pets. A decoration can be suitable in one room and hazardous in another. A secured LED ghost mounted above a child’s reach presents a different risk profile from an irregular wax candle on a low table, and both differ from a dangling ornament with detachable pieces.

Assess the complete setup rather than the product name. Check whether the item has a flame, heat, batteries, wires, small detachable parts or a surface that can be pulled over. Then consider who can reach it, whether a dog or cat can jump onto the furniture, and whether an adult can provide continuous supervision.

Which IKEA Halloween products are involved?
KUSTFYR LED hanging decoration
IKEA lists a “KUSTFYR LED hanging decoration, ghost battery-operated/white.” Because it has no open flame, it avoids the direct ignition and hot-wax hazards associated with candles. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends battery-operated lights or glow sticks instead of open-flame candles in jack-o’-lanterns and other displays that children can access.

LED does not mean risk-free. A child who can open the battery compartment may swallow a battery or handle loose parts. A pet may chew a cable or pull down a hanging unit. Place the ghost where it cannot be grabbed, climb-accessed or knocked down, and follow the product’s battery and mounting instructions.
KUSTFYR cat candles and tealights
The KUSTFYR cat candle is made from paraffin wax with a cotton/cellulose wick. IKEA’s instructions say, “Never leave a burning candle unattended” and “Keep away from children and pets.” They also require a heat-resistant candleholder and advise using a large, heat-resistant, non-flammable dish because an irregular candle can drip.
The instructions further say to keep candles away from combustible objects, maintain at least 7 cm between candles, avoid drafts and heat sources, trim the wick to 1 cm, and snuff the flame rather than blowing it out. These are operating requirements, not optional decorating tips.

For a display in a playroom, hallway, entryway or any area where a toddler, cat or dog can wander, the LED option is the more defensible choice. It still must be anchored or positioned so that a fall cannot injure someone or expose batteries.

How to use KUSTFYR candles more safely
Choose a location that cannot be reached
Use a stable, high surface that a child cannot climb to and a pet cannot access by jumping from nearby furniture. Do not rely on a narrow shelf, a tablecloth that can be pulled, or a surface beside a sofa. Keep the candle away from curtains, paper garlands, costumes, dried foliage, packaging, books and other combustible decorations. Do not place it in a doorway, on stairs, on a landing or where a tail, leash or running child could strike it.
Use the specified holder and dish
Set the candle in a heat-resistant candleholder and use the large non-flammable, heat-resistant dish recommended by IKEA for irregular candles that may drip. The dish should sit level and remain stable if the wax softens. Keep separate candles at least 7 cm apart so one flame does not heat another.
Prepare and burn it correctly
- Inspect the candle, holder and dish before lighting. Do not use a cracked holder or a candle that is damaged or subject to a recall.
- Trim the wick to 1 cm, as IKEA instructs, before lighting.
- Keep the flame away from drafts, air vents and heat sources, which can make a flame flare or cause uneven burning.
- Remain in the room and keep an adult’s attention on the candle. “Nearby” is not the same as supervised if you are cooking, answering the door or caring for a child elsewhere.
- Snuff the flame instead of blowing it out, and verify that the wick and wax are no longer burning or glowing.
- Keep matches, lighters, candle tools and melted wax inaccessible after use.
Never carry a lit candle through a home with children or pets. Extinguish it before opening the door to trick-or-treaters, leaving the room or going to bed.

How to set up the battery-operated LED ghost
Secure the decoration
Use the intended hanging point or mounting method and test the attachment before children or animals are present. A cord, string or loop should not hang at neck level, cross a walkway or form a loop that can catch on a child, collar or paw. Keep the unit away from crib rails and other places where a child could pull it down.

Protect batteries and small components
Keep the battery compartment closed and inaccessible. Children who can open the compartment should not be able to handle the batteries; button or coin cells are particularly dangerous if swallowed. Check the housing after replacing batteries and remove a decoration if its cover will not stay secure.
Inspect wires and strings
Route any lead behind furniture or through a cord cover so a pet cannot chew it and a child cannot pull it. Do not run it under rugs where damage is hidden or across stairs and door paths. Replace the item if insulation is split, a connection is loose or the housing is cracked.
Small parts, dangling pieces and choking hazards
Toddlers explore by grabbing and mouthing. Any detachable, dangling or chewable piece can become a choking or ingestion hazard. The CPSC advises that young children should not have items small enough to present a choking hazard or components that can separate during use. ASPCA gives the same practical warning for pets: small accessories can choke an animal, and chewed plastic may be harmful.
Before decorating, tug gently on eyes, tags, hanging ornaments and other attached features. This is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s instructions, but it can reveal a loose part that should not be in a toddler or pet area. Store small decorations behind a closed door when they are not being used, and do not leave packaging, twist ties or replacement parts on the floor.

Wires, plugs and light strands
ASPCA warns that a pet chewing a holiday wire can injure its mouth or suffer potentially lethal electrical shock. CPSC recommends using only safety-tested light strands, inspecting for cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires and loose connections, discarding damaged sets, and avoiding overloaded extension cords.
- Unplug lights before moving, cleaning or inspecting them.
- Discard, rather than tape over, a strand with exposed conductors, heat damage or a cracked socket.
- Keep plugs, power strips and adapters away from water bowls, litter areas and places where children can pull them.
- Do not overload an extension cord or connect more sets than its rating allows.
- Use cord covers or route cables behind furniture, while keeping ventilation openings clear.
Although the KUSTFYR ghost is battery-operated, the same inspection applies to any other IKEA seasonal light or a decoration connected to household power.

- Playroom or nursery: use a secured LED only; keep batteries, strings and loose parts out of reach. Do not use a lit candle.
- Living room: place decorations where a child cannot climb to them and a pet cannot jump from a sofa or chair. Keep the floor and walkways clear.
- Entryway and porch: keep stairs, landings and door paths free of decorations and cords so visitors cannot trip. Extinguish any candle before answering the door.
- Kitchen or dining area: keep flames away from paper décor, curtains, napkins and cooking heat. A busy meal is not adequate candle supervision.
- Pet area: remove chewable pieces and secure wires. If your pet is anxious, move it to a quiet room during trick-or-treat traffic; crowds and costumes can trigger stress and escape attempts.
Recall check for older IKEA seasonal candles
Check IKEA’s regional recall notices before using older seasonal candles. IKEA Belgium reported a recall of certain SMÖJTRÄD unscented chandelier candles with item numbers 606.131.05, 406.131.06, 306.371.84 and 006.371.85. The affected candles were sold from 1 June 2025 through 4 March 2026 in specified European markets and may contain extra wicks. Additional wicks can ignite, creating a larger-than-expected flame and a risk of fire or burn injury.
If you have one of those items, stop using it and follow IKEA’s instruction to return it for a refund or replacement. Because recalls and product availability are regional, check the IKEA site for the country where you bought the item and compare the item number and sales dates—not just the product name.

Do age labels make Halloween décor child-safe?
Product-specific age information does not transfer automatically between IKEA products. For example, IKEA says its TÖVÄDER portable children’s lamps are approved for ages 3–14. That statement concerns those lamps; it does not establish that KUSTFYR Halloween decorations are suitable for a child of the same age. Use the exact seasonal product page, warnings and instructions, then apply a stricter standard if your child still mouths objects, climbs furniture or cannot follow a “do not touch” rule.
What to do if a decoration is pulled over or damaged
- Candle: if it tips, extinguish the flame only if you can do so without reaching through fire. Move people and pets away, and treat hot wax and the holder as burn hazards until fully cool. If flames spread, leave and call emergency services rather than attempting a risky cleanup.
- LED or wired item: remove the batteries or unplug it only when safe, then take the decoration out of service if the housing, wire or battery cover is damaged.
- Possible ingestion: if a child or pet may have swallowed a battery, wax, plastic or a small part, seek urgent medical or veterinary advice. Do not wait for symptoms when a button or coin cell may be involved.
- Pet exposure: contact a veterinarian promptly after wire chewing, suspected battery ingestion or burns.
How much risk is associated with candles and cords?
CPSC data for 2017–2019 found an annual average of about 5,600 fires associated with candles and about 1,600 associated with electrical cords and plugs in the United States. Those figures cover broad household products, not IKEA Halloween decorations specifically, but they explain why eliminating an open flame and inspecting electrical equipment are meaningful risk reductions.
Practical decision rule
Choose the KUSTFYR battery-operated LED ghost when children or pets can enter the display area, provided you secure the unit, protect the battery compartment and control any wire or hanging loop. Use a KUSTFYR candle only in an adults-only, controlled space where the candle is in the specified heat-resistant setup, inaccessible to children and pets, and watched continuously. If you cannot meet those conditions, do not light it; select a flameless decoration instead.
